DogTime reports that a Golden Retriever named Skylar appears in a family reel near a baby and toddler, with the family jokingly calling her their “nanny dog.” The scenes sound sweet, but “nanny” is a nickname—not childcare: no dog should be left alone with a baby.
What Skylar’s “nanny” job appears to be
In its August 14, 2026 report, DogTime identifies the Golden Retriever as Skylar and credits the reel to the Instagram account @skylars.the.limit. DogTime describes Skylar around a baby and toddler, including mealtime and cleanup moments. It reports the on-screen phrases “Meet our nanny dog,” “Dinner duty,” and “cleanup crew.”

The family’s label gives an affectionate, funny spin to a dog’s place in family life. The report does not establish that Skylar is assigned to wake, supervise, or care for the baby, and the original Instagram post has not been independently verified here. The footage, as described, is a glimpse of companionship—not evidence that a dog can act as a caregiver.
Can a dog be left alone with a baby?
No. The ASPCA’s Dog Bite Prevention guidance is direct: “Never leave a baby or young child alone with a dog.” A calm-looking moment in a reel cannot show how a dog may respond in every circumstance, so an adult must supervise any interaction.

That rule applies even when a dog is familiar with the family or appears gentle. A dog should not be responsible for waking, watching, or otherwise caring for an infant; those are adult responsibilities.
How to manage dog-and-baby time safely
Prepare for the baby’s arrival
The ASPCA’s Dogs and Babies guide recommends helping a dog adjust to the sights, sounds, smells, handling, and routine changes that come with a baby. Teaching useful behavior and making those adjustments ahead of time can help the transition.

Stay present during interactions
UC Davis Veterinary Medicine advises direct supervision of young children around dogs. Keep an adult attentive and close enough to intervene when the dog and child are together; a barrier is not a substitute for supervision during interaction.

If you need to focus on the baby alone, UC Davis suggests placing the dog in another room behind a baby gate, with a treat or favorite toy. Use a barrier that securely separates the spaces and fits your home layout. The gate creates separation while you attend to the baby; it does not make unsupervised contact safe.

Why the joke needs a safety footnote
Calling Skylar a “nanny dog” makes for a charming caption, especially alongside the reported “dinner duty” and “cleanup crew” moments. But a pet’s affectionate role in a family is different from a caregiver’s responsibility. Enjoy the companionship—and keep supervision and baby care with an adult.
