Wisconsin reported H5N1 avian flu in poultry flocks in Dane, Jefferson and Walworth counties in late February and early March 2026. The cases involved one backyard flock and three commercial premises. DATCP lists the quarantines for those premises as released, but movement rules and event restrictions can change; check the state’s current notices before moving poultry or poultry products.

Where H5N1 was found in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) case table lists four premises in the three counties. The counts below are the poultry counts reported for each premise; they are not a confirmed total of birds depopulated.

County Date listed Poultry count Premise type Quarantine status in DATCP table
Dane February 27, 2026 55 Backyard Released
Jefferson February 26, 2026 1,219,988 Commercial Released
Jefferson March 4, 2026 1,621,847 Commercial Released
Walworth March 4, 2026 1,493,596 Commercial Released

The Wisconsin Examiner reported the three-county incident on March 6, 2026. DATCP’s case table, last updated September 15, 2026, shows the listed quarantines as released. The table is a snapshot: additional cases elsewhere in the state may change the statewide picture.

What quarantine and control areas mean

When HPAI is diagnosed in a Wisconsin poultry flock, DATCP establishes a control area within 10 kilometers of the infected premises. While the area remains active, movement on or off premises with poultry is restricted. The radius describes the control area, not a blanket statewide ban; follow the specific instructions in force for your location.

Affected premises were quarantined, and infected birds were depopulated. DATCP’s Walworth County notice says, “Birds from the flock will not enter the food system.” The published premise counts should not be added up and described as a confirmed number depopulated: DATCP’s table reports poultry on affected premises, but the available notices do not establish a single combined depopulation total for these detections.

Were poultry shows and events canceled?

DATCP suspended poultry shows, exhibitions, swap meets and movement of poultry to events in 20 southern Wisconsin counties through May 10, 2026. Dane, Jefferson and Walworth were among the listed counties. That was a dated restriction, not a permanent statewide rule. For a current event or movement decision, check DATCP’s latest notices rather than relying on the expired end date or an old event listing.

Can you move chickens, eggs or poultry products?

Do not assume that a released quarantine means all movement is unrestricted everywhere, or that an old event suspension remains active. DATCP’s movement restrictions depend on current control areas and notices. Check the agency’s current map and instructions for your premises and the particular item you plan to move. If a control area applies, follow its movement requirements before transporting poultry, eggs or poultry products.

For birds going to a show, swap meet or exhibition, confirm that the event and movement are currently permitted. The 2026 suspension described above ran through May 10, 2026; current rules may differ.

How to reduce avian-flu risk in a backyard flock

DATCP describes H5N1 as highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry. Virus can spread through infected birds, contact with wild birds or their droppings, and contaminated equipment or clothing. Biosecurity means interrupting those routes into and between poultry areas.

  • Limit wild-bird contact. Keep poultry indoors when possible and reduce access by wild birds to feed and water.
  • Use clean hands and dedicated clothing. Wash hands before and after handling birds; avoid carrying clothing or footwear used elsewhere into the flock area.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment. Keep tools and equipment from being shared between poultry areas unless cleaned and disinfected first.
  • Restrict access. Limit unnecessary visitors and control who enters the area where birds are kept.
  • Quarantine new birds. Keep new flock additions separate for at least 30 days before introducing them to resident birds.

Disposable poultry boot covers can help keep contaminated footwear from carrying material between poultry areas, but they are only one part of biosecurity. Use them in a way that avoids transferring contamination when putting them on or taking them off, and dispose of them appropriately. They do not replace handwashing, cleaning, disinfection or DATCP movement requirements.

What to check before acting

  • Look up your location on DATCP’s current HPAI map and read any instructions for an active control area.
  • Check the latest DATCP notices before moving birds or poultry products or attending an event.
  • Use flock biosecurity every day, not only when a county restriction is announced.
