Neonatal Kitten Care for Foster Carers: What the Major Shelter and Vet Guidance Says

Caring for a newborn kitten comes down to five things: keep it warm, feed it correctly, help it eliminate, keep everything clean, and weigh it daily. Before any of that, though, check whether the kittens actually need you. A mother cat is almost always the best caregiver. This guide pulls together published advice from the ASPCA, Best Friends Animal Society and VCA Animal Hospitals. It is general guidance and does not replace the plan from your rescue or veterinarian.

I found kittens outside: should I take them?

Not necessarily. The ASPCA warns: “Removing kittens from their current environment may not always be the right answer as the mom cat could be nearby getting food (or hiding from you)—and no one can care for a kitten like their mom can!” Its advice is to observe from a distance, if the kittens are safe, and check periodically over a few hours to see whether she returns. Source: ASPCA, “I Found Kittens Outside, What Do I Do?”

If a kitten looks ill or injured, don’t wait. Call a local shelter, rescue or veterinary clinic. Ideally, work out the litter’s care plan with one of them from the start.

Mother-raised versus orphaned kittens

Situation Who does the work What you do
Mother present, nursing, kittens look healthy The mother feeds, warms and stimulates elimination Provide support and monitoring, and coordinate with a rescue or vet
Mother absent or unable to care, or kittens unwell You Provide warmth, bottle feeding, elimination stimulation, sanitation and weight tracking

A mother’s milk, especially the early colostrum, supplies nutrition and immune support, so keeping kittens with a capable mother avoids unnecessary hand-rearing. An orphaned neonate may need frequent round-the-clock feeds. Sources: VCA, “Feeding Orphaned Kittens”; Best Friends, “Neonatal Kitten Care” (updated May 2022).

How do I feed orphaned kittens?

Schedule

VCA’s general schedule is every 2–4 hours in the first week, then every 4–6 hours until weaning. The milk replacer label and your vet’s plan for the individual kitten take priority.

Technique

  1. Warm the prepared replacer to about 100°F (38°C), and avoid overheating it.
  2. Confirm the kitten is warm.
  3. Hold the kitten horizontally with its head in a neutral position. Do not feed it on its back.
  4. Check that the nipple releases fluid slowly. VCA warns that an overly fast flow can cause aspiration, pneumonia or death.

Hygiene

Clean and sterilize bottles and nipples between uses. VCA advises keeping prepared replacer refrigerated and discarding it after an hour at room temperature.

Helping kittens eliminate

Kittens generally can’t eliminate on their own until about three weeks old. After each feed, gently stimulate the genital and anal area with a warm, moist cotton ball or soft cloth. Watch urine and stool, and report concerning changes to your foster or veterinary team. (VCA)

How often should kittens be weighed?

VCA recommends recording each kitten’s birth weight and weighing daily for the first four weeks, then weekly from week five. Typical birth weight is 80–120 grams, and VCA gives a minimum gain of 7 grams per day. These are published care guidelines rather than study results. Also keep notes on intake, elimination, activity and milestones. A kitten that isn’t gaining is a reason to call your vet or rescue the same day.
