If she is absent or cannot care for them, contact a veterinarian or local rescue for guidance: orphaned kittens need warmth, commercial kitten milk replacer, frequent feeds, help eliminating, and close monitoring.
I found kittens outside. What should I do?
A mother cat is usually the best source of nourishment and care. If the kittens appear clean, plump, quiet, and not ill or injured, watch from a distance to see whether she returns; she may be away getting food or waiting for people to leave. ASPCA recommends checking for her before removing kittens. If their location is unsafe, move them nearby to a safer spot where she can still find them.

If a kitten appears ill or injured, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly. If you are unsure whether the mother is nursing or able to care for the litter, ask a veterinarian or rescue for help assessing the situation. Follow local found-animal procedures where applicable.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The kittens seem well, and their mother may return | Observe quietly from a distance and check whether she comes back before intervening. |
| The kittens seem well, but their spot is unsafe | Move them to a nearby safer place the mother can locate, then continue observing. |
| A kitten is ill or injured, or the mother is absent or unable to care for them | Contact a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue for prompt individual guidance. |
For kittens without a nursing mother, the caregiver’s core tasks are warmth, age-appropriate nutrition, elimination support, sanitation, and close monitoring. A veterinarian or rescue can help determine what a particular kitten needs.

What do you feed an orphaned newborn kitten?
Use a commercial kitten milk replacer, following its label and veterinary advice. VCA Animal Hospitals’ orphan-feeding guidance, last updated February 4, 2025, recommends commercial replacer over cow’s milk or homemade mixtures. Do not treat cow’s milk or a homemade recipe as an equivalent substitute.
VCA gives these general energy requirements for orphaned kittens. They are not a personalized feeding prescription; use the replacer’s directions and a veterinarian’s advice to work out an individual kitten’s feeding plan.

How do you help a kitten pee and poop?
Kittens generally cannot eliminate independently until about three weeks old. After feeding, gently stroke the area between the anus and vulva or penis with a warm, damp cotton ball or soft cloth. Ask a veterinarian to demonstrate the technique, especially if you have not done it before.

When do kittens start weaning?
Milk replacer is generally the sole nutrition source until weaning begins at about 3–4 weeks, according to VCA’s guidance last updated February 4, 2025. Weaning is gradual rather than a fixed-date switch: ASPCA describes first offering replacer in a dish, then introducing gruel and reducing replacer over time.
ASPCA’s milestones are approximate: by 5–6 weeks, kittens should be relying on kitten food for nutrients; by 8–10 weeks, they should be accustomed to unmoistened kitten food. Follow veterinary advice if a kitten is not progressing or is having trouble feeding.
