Short answer: A 2026 GPS study found that, in the lion–hyena pairs it could analyze, spotted hyenas usually moved away from lions, while male lions moved toward hyenas in some pairs. That reverses the familiar picture of lions routinely shadowing hyenas—but it does not mean lions always follow them, or that hyenas never take food from lions.
The result describes movement during close encounters in two southern African ecosystems. Carcass disputes are a separate question, and field studies show that both species can seize food from the other under particular conditions.

What the new GPS study actually found
The peer-reviewed 2026 study, “Predators in motion: fine-scale dyadic movements reveal interference competition and asymmetric coordination in African lions and spotted hyenas,” tracked 17 lions and 14 spotted hyenas in Namibia’s Etosha National Park and the Chobe–Linyanti system of northern Botswana. Researchers used high-frequency GPS telemetry and kept only timestamps when both animals had real, concurrent fixes, sampled at five-minute intervals. They did not fill gaps with estimated positions. Read the study in Frontiers in Ethology.
Across three independent statistical tests, the hyenas showed a consistent retreat signal. In three of the 10 lion–hyena dyads, lions moved toward hyenas more often than chance would predict; all three of those dyads involved male lions. Female-lion results were less clear. The pattern therefore supports an asymmetry in the encounters that were measured, not a rule for every lion, hyena, park or population.

Lead author Dr Nancy Barker described the finding this way: “Our GPS collar data shows that African lions and spotted hyenas leave a clear, measurable signature in the way they move around one another. Spotted hyenas consistently move away from lions, while male lions tend to move toward hyenas.” Her wording is important: “tend to” applies to the male-lion approach result, while the retreat signal was the more consistent of the two.
Why “trailing” is an incomplete description
Wildlife films often show hyenas arriving behind lions or gathering around a carcass. Those scenes can make it look as though hyenas simply trail lions to steal their kills. GPS movement adds a different window: what each collared animal did when a nearby member of the other species was also being recorded.
In the 2026 data, the typical close-encounter movement was hyenas increasing distance from lions. Male lions sometimes reduced that distance. That is evidence of interference competition: one predator’s presence changes the other’s movement. It is not evidence that lions always pursue hyenas, that hyenas never approach lions, or that every visible following scene has been misidentified.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The study also has a deliberately narrow scope. It covered two ecosystems, 31 collared individuals and only moments with simultaneous fixes. Barker cautioned that tracking many large carnivores at once is difficult and that some fine-scale results should be treated as trends rather than firm conclusions. A small, carefully measured sample can reveal a repeatable behavior without establishing a continent-wide law.
How the movement was measured
Concurrent fixes rather than reconstructed paths
Each comparison used a genuine GPS position from a lion and a hyena at the same time. Because the collars recorded at five-minute intervals, the researchers could examine movement around encounters at a much finer scale than a map showing one location per day. Excluding imputed positions reduces the risk that a computer-generated location creates a false approach or retreat.

Dyads, not an average for an entire species
A dyad is one lion–hyena pair. The analysis asked whether the members of that pair moved toward or away from one another. Results differed among pairs, which is why the paper reports three of 10 dyads showing a stronger-than-chance lion approach signal rather than claiming that every male lion behaves identically.
Sex mattered in the limited sample
All three dyads with a clear approach signal involved male lions. Female-lion movement was ambiguous in the available data. That finding is biologically plausible because adult males can dominate access to carcasses, but the study did not test every social or ecological explanation, and its sample cannot support a general statement about all male lions.
Does this mean lions follow hyenas everywhere?
No. The evidence supports a qualified statement: in the analyzed encounters, hyenas generally retreated and some male lions approached. It does not show that lions always follow hyenas, that lions never avoid them, or that hyenas universally flee.
Movement is also not the same as winning a carcass. An animal may leave a dangerous encounter yet still obtain food later, and an animal that approaches may fail to displace its rival. Distance, cover, hunger, group size, prey value and the presence of additional animals can all change what happens after the GPS locations are recorded.
Are hyenas scavengers that steal from lions?
Calling spotted hyenas “just scavengers” is inaccurate. They hunt substantial amounts of their own food, and the two predators can take food from one another. The technical term for taking food caught or acquired by another animal is kleptoparasitism. It is reciprocal, although the balance can change with local conditions.

What the Serengeti carcass observations showed
A Journal of Animal Ecology study of observed kills in the Serengeti recorded both directions of theft. During its second observation period, lions were attracted to 26% of 85 observed hyena kills and took over 22% of them—19 kills. Hyenas acquired 22 kills from lions and lost 19 to lions during that period. These are direct observations from that study and period, not a current rate for Africa as a whole. See the 2002 Journal of Animal Ecology study.
The same work found that hyenas could take lion kills when adult male lions were absent, but did not take over lion kills in the reported observations when adult male lions were present. That comparison illustrates why a single dramatic video cannot establish which species normally wins.
Why adult males can change the outcome
An adult male lion can be a decisive threat at a carcass. A hyena clan may displace a lone lion or exploit a temporary opening, while several lions or a male-backed group may retain the kill. Relative numbers matter too: a large hyena group can pressure a small lion party, but a coalition or pride can reverse that advantage.
What mortality data adds—and what it does not
An Etosha study published in African Journal of Ecology reported that lions caused 71% of recorded hyena mortality in that local study population. During one year, male lions killed four cubs and one adult female. The figure is site- and period-specific; it is not an estimate of spotted-hyena mortality across Africa. Read the Etosha competition study.
Mortality and movement answer different questions. A hyena may retreat repeatedly because a lion is dangerous, while a clan may still steal a carcass when conditions favor it. Conversely, lions killing hyenas does not prove that lions routinely track every hyena group. Treat the 71% figure as evidence of severe local pressure, not as a universal measure of the rivalry.

How to compare the evidence without mixing it up
| Question | Evidence type | What was observed | How far the result can be generalized |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who moves toward the other? | Five-minute concurrent GPS fixes | Hyenas generally moved away; approach above chance appeared in three of 10 dyads, all involving male lions | Studied collared animals in Etosha and Chobe–Linyanti; not every population |
| Who takes a carcass? | Direct observations of kills in the Serengeti | Lions took 19 of 85 observed hyena kills in the second observation period; hyenas also acquired lion kills | Specific observations and period; not a continent-wide percentage |
| How dangerous are lions to hyenas? | Recorded mortality in an Etosha population | Lions accounted for 71% of hyena mortality in that study; four cubs and one adult female were killed by male lions in one year | Local, time-bounded estimate |
| Does adult male presence matter? | Carcass observations | Hyenas took lion kills when adult males were absent in the reported cases, but not when adult males were present | Applies to those observations, not every encounter |
GPS movement, carcass observation and mortality records should not be treated as interchangeable. A movement study can detect avoidance without recording a kill; a carcass study can show appropriation without revealing how the animals approached; a mortality study records deaths, not ordinary encounters.

Different ecosystems create different contests
Etosha and Chobe–Linyanti are not interchangeable landscapes, and neither is identical to the Serengeti. Prey communities, water distribution, vegetation, human pressures and the density of predators affect how often lions and hyenas meet and how valuable a carcass is. A behavior that is advantageous around a waterhole may not be advantageous across open plains.
Numbers at the carcass can outweigh species labels
The relevant comparison is often one lion versus a clan, or several lions versus a few hyenas, rather than “lions versus hyenas” as abstract categories. Group size, cohesion and the arrival of adult males can determine whether an animal approaches, waits, abandons food or returns later.
Social information changes decisions
Both species can use calls, scent and visible movement to locate competitors. A hyena may leave before a lion reaches the carcass, avoiding an injury that would cost more than the food is worth. A lion may approach because the potential reward is high or because the hyenas reveal a carcass. Neither decision requires the species to follow a fixed script.

- Identify the event. Is the film showing travel, a close encounter, a kill, a displacement attempt or feeding after the other species has left?
- Check the direction of movement. A hyena moving behind a lion in one shot does not establish that it caused the lion to move or that the lion is being tracked.
- Count the animals. Note whether adult male lions, a pride, a coalition or a large hyena clan is present.
- Separate arrival from ownership. Reaching a carcass first, feeding first and retaining it are different outcomes.
- Ask where and when it was filmed. A scene from one reserve or season cannot stand in for every African population.
The 2026 GPS result is especially useful for correcting narration that treats every hyena near a lion as a thief in pursuit. It supports a more precise description: hyenas may approach food opportunities, but during the measured close encounters they generally moved away from lions, and male lions sometimes moved toward them.

What remains unknown
The study does not establish whether the same movement pattern occurs at all carcasses, in all seasons or in populations with different lion and hyena densities. It also does not quantify how often either species scavenges, hunts or successfully displaces the other. Those questions require additional observations that combine movement, social context and carcass outcomes.
The limited number of collared individuals is a practical constraint, not a flaw unique to this project. Large carnivores are difficult to capture and track simultaneously, and restricting analysis to concurrent fixes necessarily reduces the usable dataset. The result is strongest as evidence of a repeatable movement signal in the sampled dyads and weakest when expanded into a universal claim about Africa.
The accurate takeaway
The old visual shorthand—hyenas endlessly trailing lions to steal their meals—misses the most consistent movement signal measured so far in the new study. Spotted hyenas generally retreated from lions, while some male lions approached hyenas. Yet the broader relationship remains reciprocal and conditional: both species can obtain the other’s kills, and adult male lions, group size, geography and timing can decide who keeps a carcass.

So the corrected answer is neither “lions always trail hyenas” nor “hyenas never steal from lions.” It is that movement and scavenging are separate behaviors, and the best current GPS evidence shows an asymmetric encounter pattern rather than a simple one-way chase.
