New Hampshire has one official state animal: the white-tailed deer. The often-cited number 12 combines that animal with 11 other animals assigned to separate official categories, including state bird, insect, amphibian, fish, wildcat, poultry, raptor, spider and marsupial. New Hampshire Revised Statutes (RSA) Chapter 3 supplies the controlling designations; the state tourism facts page supplies the bird and insect entries.
The complete list of New Hampshire’s 12 animal symbols
The table below keeps each animal in its legal or official category. Calling all 12 “state animals” is a useful shorthand for a list, but it blurs distinctions that matter: only the white-tailed deer has the statutory title “official state animal.”

Why the answer depends on the category
New Hampshire’s symbol system is not a ranking of 12 animals competing for one title. It is a collection of designations spread across different groups of wildlife and domestic animals. The white-tailed deer occupies the broad “official state animal” category. The bobcat occupies the narrower “state wildcat” category, while the red-tailed hawk occupies the “state raptor” category. Neither of those designations replaces or duplicates the deer’s legal status.
The same distinction applies to the fish. Striped bass is the official saltwater game fish, and brook trout is the official freshwater fish. A reader asking for “New Hampshire’s state fish” therefore needs to specify which water category is meant. Treating one as the single state fish would remove a distinction the state’s designations intentionally preserve.

Bird, insect, amphibian, butterfly, spider, poultry and marsupial are also independent categories. The purple finch is the state bird, while the ladybug is the state insect. The red-spotted newt is the amphibian, and the Karner blue butterfly has its own butterfly designation. The New Hampshire Red is poultry, not the state bird, and the red-tailed hawk is the raptor.
The white-tailed deer: the singular official state animal
When a form, classroom assignment or quiz asks, “What is New Hampshire’s state animal?” the precise answer is the white-tailed deer. RSA 3:12 uses singular statutory language: “The white tail deer is hereby designated as the official state animal of New Hampshire.” That sentence is narrower than a general list of animals associated with the state.
The spelling in the statute is “white tail deer,” while common current usage usually writes “white-tailed deer.” Both refer to the designation in RSA 3:12. Using the statutory wording in a quotation and the familiar hyphenated form in ordinary prose avoids changing the legal text while keeping the animal recognizable to readers.

How the other wildlife categories fit together
Bird and raptor are different labels
The purple finch is identified as New Hampshire’s state bird on the state tourism facts page. The red-tailed hawk is separately identified in RSA Chapter 3 as the state raptor. A raptor is a category within the wider world of birds for purposes of this symbol list, so the two entries are not contradictory: one is the general bird designation and the other is the raptor designation.
Amphibian and butterfly are separate designations
The red-spotted newt is the official state amphibian. RSA 3:16 calls it a “spotted newt,” while the tourism facts page uses the fuller name “red-spotted newt.” Those labels should be presented together rather than treated as two different symbols. The Karner blue butterfly is a separate official designation and should not be folded into the amphibian entry.
Insect and spider are not interchangeable
The ladybug is listed as the state insect. The daring jumping spider is the official state spider. Everyday speech sometimes uses “bug” broadly, but the state’s categories do not: the insect and spider entries represent different official groupings.

Saltwater and freshwater fish
New Hampshire’s list distinguishes striped bass as the official saltwater game fish from brook trout as the official freshwater fish. This wording tells you how to answer a context-specific question. A lesson about coastal or estuarine species points to striped bass; a question about the freshwater designation points to brook trout.
Wildcat and marsupial
The bobcat carries the official state wildcat designation. The Virginia opossum carries the official state marsupial designation. These are category titles, not alternative names for the state animal. The opossum entry is especially important for current lists because its statutory provision took effect on September 30, 2025.
Poultry
The New Hampshire Red is the official state poultry. Its inclusion means the 12-symbol count covers a domesticated bird category as well as wild species. It should not be confused with the purple finch, which is the state bird, or the red-tailed hawk, which is the state raptor.

What changed with the 2025 opossum designation?
New Hampshire added the Virginia opossum as its official state marsupial in 2025. RSA 3:32 states: “The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is hereby designated as the official state marsupial of New Hampshire and such opossums found within our borders shall be known as ‘New Hampshire opossums.’” The provision’s effective date is September 30, 2025.
That date explains why older webpages, worksheets and animal-symbol lists may show only 11 entries or omit the marsupial category altogether. For a current count, include the Virginia opossum and identify it as a 2025 addition. The legal name in the statute is Virginia opossum; “New Hampshire opossums” is the special name the provision gives to opossums found within the state.
Which source should you trust?
RSA Chapter 3 is the controlling source for statutory designations. It establishes the white-tailed deer, red-spotted (statutory “spotted”) newt, Karner blue butterfly, striped bass, brook trout, bobcat, New Hampshire Red, red-tailed hawk, daring jumping spider and Virginia opossum entries cited above. The state tourism facts page is useful for the purple finch and ladybug entries and for reader-friendly names.

The tourism page reflects an older symbol list, so it should not override a newer statute. This matters most for the Virginia opossum, whose effective date falls in 2025. If a source gives a different total, check whether it predates that effective date or whether it is counting only animals with the exact legal title “official state animal.”
A reliable way to explain the list
- Answer the singular question first: say that the white-tailed deer is New Hampshire’s official state animal.
- Explain the count: note that the number 12 includes separate category designations, not 12 animals sharing one title.
- Use the category names: distinguish state bird, insect, amphibian, butterfly, saltwater game fish, freshwater fish, wildcat, poultry, raptor, spider and marsupial.
- Use current law: include the Virginia opossum as state marsupial because its provision became effective September 30, 2025.
- Preserve statutory wording when needed: quote RSA 3:12 for the deer, RSA 3:16’s “spotted newt” wording for the amphibian, and RSA 3:32 for the opossum.
This approach gives students, writers and visitors both answers they are likely seeking: the single official state animal is the white-tailed deer, and the broader current animal-symbol list contains 12 entries across distinct official categories.
