A new pet can bring companionship, routine and plenty of funny moments. The early days also go better when you prepare, keep things calm and let the animal set the pace. Most adopters are happy: a 2026 University of Florida survey found over 94% rated their experience positively. Many also met early snags. This guide covers what to prepare, how to handle the first days, and what the long-term commitment involves.
What a new pet can (and can’t) promise
The CDC describes potential social, emotional and cognitive benefits of dogs, including stress relief and encouragement to be active. These are potential benefits, not guarantees. A new animal also adds work, noise and disruption at first. Joy usually comes more easily once the household has settled.
The CDC’s dog guidance is written for dogs. Several recommendations below are labeled dog-specific. Do not assume they apply to cats or other species.
What adopters actually report
The University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program published survey findings (February 20, 2026) from more than 22,000 dog and cat adopters at 112 shelters and rescues in 40 U.S. states. Surveys went out on Day 1, Week 1 and Month 1 after adoption.

These are self-reported survey results. Together they suggest that a good adoption and a few early problems often go together. A hiccup in week one does not mean you chose wrong.

Dog-specific checklist
The AVMA lists these basics for a dog:
- An appropriate place to eat and sleep
- Food and water bowls
- A collar, leash and ID tag
- A pet-proofed home
Pet-proofing means looking at the home from the animal’s level and removing or securing anything it could chew, swallow or get into. If you are shopping, a collar and leash set plus an ID tag covers the walking basics. A leash is a dog item, not a universal requirement for every pet.

For any species
- Choose the animal by its real needs, not looks. Compare species-specific care, expected activity, whatever temperament and history information the shelter has, your household schedule and your capacity for long-term care.
- Set up a quiet space in advance where the animal can retreat.
- Agree on who feeds, walks, cleans and pays for care before the pet comes home.
The first days: keep it calm
A new home is a big transition. AAHA’s guidance on adopting a rescue dog describes a “3-3-3 rule”: roughly the first three days, three weeks and three months. Treat it as a way to set expectations, not a schedule. Every animal adjusts differently. The advice is to offer a quiet, comforting space and let the individual animal set the pace.
That means limiting stimulation. In an AAHA article, trainer Leanne James, founder of Evolution Dog Training, advises: “Don’t bring them everywhere, don’t have everybody come to your house.” Hold off on the welcome party and the trip to the pet store. Introduce people and places gradually.

Health and safety
- Vet visit (dog-specific): The CDC advises seeing a veterinarian within a few days to a week after adopting a dog or puppy, then keeping up routine care.
- Children (dog-specific): The CDC advises supervising young children around dogs.
The long game
The laughter comes from a relationship, and a relationship takes time. The AVMA says dog owners are responsible for food, shelter, companionship, exercise, and physical and mental health throughout the dog’s life. Other species have their own needs, so check them before you commit. If problems persist past the early weeks, ask your vet or a qualified trainer for help.
