New York has nine official animal-related state symbols when the state’s animal, bird, fish, dog, shell, fossil, reptile and insect designations are counted together. They are the beaver, eastern bluebird, striped bass, working dog, bay scallop, Eurypterus remipes, common snapping turtle, nine-spotted ladybug and brook trout.
That total needs one qualification: “nine state animals” is a reader-friendly umbrella description, not one legal category. New York assigns symbols to separate categories. The list also includes a working-dog category rather than a single breed and a fossil representing an extinct marine arthropod. The state animal in the formal sense is the beaver.

The nine animal-related symbols at a glance
The New York State Assembly’s current state-symbol list identifies 17 symbols overall. Nine of those entries represent animals, animal groups or an animal fossil. The table below keeps each official category separate so that “state fish,” “state animal” and similar shorthand do not blur important distinctions.

| State animal | Beaver | The formal state-animal designation; the Department of Environmental Conservation also describes it as New York’s official mammal. |
| State bird | Eastern bluebird | The Assembly’s symbol graphic uses the full name “eastern bluebird.” |
| State marine or saltwater fish | Striped bass | New York’s saltwater fish designation, distinct from the freshwater fish. |
| State dog | Working dog | A category covering working dogs, not one named breed. |
| State shell | Bay scallop | A mollusk shell chosen as an official symbol. |
| State fossil | Eurypterus remipes | An extinct marine arthropod, commonly known as a sea scorpion; it represents a fossil rather than a living species. |
| State reptile | Common snapping turtle | The snapping turtle was adopted as New York’s state reptile in 2006. |
| State insect | Nine-spotted ladybug | New York Assembly materials use “nine-spotted ladybug”; DEC materials also use “nine-spotted lady beetle.” |
| State freshwater fish | Brook trout | The freshwater fish designation; it is not the same category as the striped bass. |
Read as a checklist, these nine entries cover living mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and insects, a working-animal category, a mollusk shell and an extinct fossil. That range is why the counting rule matters.

What “nine state animals” means in New York
New York does not have one statute or symbol heading called “the nine state animals.” Instead, the Assembly lists individual designations such as state animal, state bird and state reptile. Grouping the animal-related entries together is useful for readers, classrooms and symbol guides, but it should not replace the official category names.
The formal answer to “What is New York’s state animal?” is the beaver. The Assembly’s graphic states, “Our state animal: BEAVER.” The broader nine-item count adds the other categories because each official entry represents an animal, an animal group or an animal fossil.
The count also explains why a fossil appears on the list. Eurypterus remipes is not a living animal in New York today; it is an extinct marine arthropod preserved as the state fossil. Excluding it would produce a narrower list of living animals, but that would no longer match the Assembly’s complete set of animal-related symbols.

Beaver — the formal state animal
The beaver occupies New York’s specific “state animal” category. DEC describes it as the state’s official mammal, while the Assembly labels it the state animal. Those two descriptions refer to the same official choice, viewed through slightly different category wording.
The Assembly’s activity material dates the beaver designation to 1975. That date is useful when building a timeline, but it should not be treated as evidence that every symbol on the nine-item list was adopted in the same year; adoption years for all nine are not established in the official material summarized here.

Working dog — a category, not a breed
New York’s state-dog entry is “working dog.” The wording is significant: the state did not select one breed as its official dog. The symbol recognizes a functional group of dogs used for work, so replacing it with a particular breed would change the official designation.
When writing or teaching about this symbol, use “working dog” as the name and explain that it is a category. It belongs in the nine-item count because the official state-symbol list includes it as the state dog entry, even though it does not identify a single species or breed in the way the beaver or eastern bluebird does.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Common snapping turtle — the state reptile
The common snapping turtle is New York’s state reptile. DEC states that the snapping turtle was adopted as the state reptile in 2006. This is one of the clearest dated facts in the official descriptions and provides a firm reference point for the reptile designation.
The official name includes “common,” so that qualifier should be retained in a precise list. Calling it simply “the turtle” loses the category’s identifying detail and could suggest that every turtle species in the state shares the designation.
Bird and insect symbols
Eastern bluebird — the state bird
The eastern bluebird is New York’s state bird. The Assembly’s symbol graphic specifies the full common name, “eastern bluebird,” which is preferable to shortening the entry to “bluebird” in a definitive list.

The Assembly material dates the eastern bluebird designation to 1970. As with the beaver and brook trout dates, this is a selected adoption date, not a complete chronology for all nine animal-related symbols.
Nine-spotted ladybug — the state insect
New York’s state insect is the nine-spotted ladybug. Official state materials use two closely related common-name forms: the Assembly uses “nine-spotted ladybug,” while DEC’s symbols page calls it the “nine-spotted lady beetle.” Both labels point to the same state-insect designation in the official materials.
For consistency with the Assembly’s list, this article uses “nine-spotted ladybug.” If you are comparing state documents, the alternate “lady beetle” wording is a naming variation, not a second insect symbol.
New York’s two fish designations
Striped bass — the marine or saltwater fish
The striped bass is New York’s state marine, or saltwater, fish. The marine designation is essential because it distinguishes the striped bass from the state’s freshwater fish. A statement such as “the striped bass is New York’s state fish” is incomplete unless it specifies the saltwater category.
Brook trout — the freshwater fish
The brook trout holds New York’s state freshwater-fish designation. The Assembly and DEC materials present the brook trout and striped bass as two separate fish symbols, divided by habitat category rather than competing for one slot.

The Assembly activity material dates the brook trout designation to 1975. That date should be presented specifically as the adoption date supplied for the brook trout, not as a date for New York’s entire fish-symbol system.
Why the fish distinction prevents mistakes
New York’s list answers “Does New York have a state fish?” with a qualified yes: it has one official freshwater fish and one official marine or saltwater fish. The brook trout is the freshwater choice; the striped bass is the saltwater choice. Treating either one as the sole, unqualified state fish erases a distinction the official categories deliberately preserve.
Bay scallop and the state shell
The bay scallop is New York’s state shell. It is a mollusk, so it broadens the list beyond vertebrates without changing the official category. The symbol is the shell designation itself, which is why it belongs in an animal-symbol inventory even though the category is not called “state mollusk.”
Including the bay scallop also illustrates the difference between a symbol’s biological identity and its legal heading. The animal represented is a scallop, while the state category refers to the shell. A careful list should retain both parts: bay scallop, state shell.
Eurypterus remipes: the fossil that represents an extinct animal
Eurypterus remipes is New York’s state fossil. The Assembly identifies it as an extinct marine arthropod and notes the common name “sea scorpion.” It is therefore neither a living state animal nor a modern fish, reptile or insect.

Its inclusion is still official and intentional. The nine-item count follows the Assembly’s categories, and the fossil is one of those categories. When explaining the list, call it an extinct marine arthropod fossil rather than implying that sea scorpions are living members of New York’s present-day fauna.
This entry is also why a narrow question needs a stated scope. A guide limited to living species could discuss eight living animal-related entries, depending on how it treats the working-dog category and shell designation. The official nine-symbol grouping is broader because it includes the state fossil.
How the official totals fit together
The Assembly’s current activity identifies 17 New York state symbols. DEC’s older brochure gives a total of 16. The difference reflects the fact that symbol inventories can change when the legislature adds a designation; the Assembly material includes yogurt as a snack, which is absent from the older brochure.
For a current total, use the Assembly’s 17-symbol inventory and do not present the older 16-symbol brochure count as if it were current. The discrepancy does not alter the nine animal-related entries listed above, but it does show why the date and source of a symbol count matter.
A precise way to answer common questions
- What is New York’s state animal? The beaver.
- What are the nine animal-related symbols? Beaver, eastern bluebird, striped bass, working dog, bay scallop, Eurypterus remipes, common snapping turtle, nine-spotted ladybug and brook trout.
- Does New York have one state fish? It has two fish categories: striped bass for marine or saltwater waters and brook trout for freshwater.
- Is the state dog a particular breed? No. The official entry is the category “working dog.”
- Is the state fossil a living animal? No. Eurypterus remipes is an extinct marine arthropod represented by fossils.
- Why do official pages say “ladybug” and “lady beetle”? The Assembly uses “nine-spotted ladybug,” while DEC uses “nine-spotted lady beetle” for the state insect.
Three adoption dates that are documented
The official Assembly material prints these selected dates:
- Eastern bluebird: 1970.
- Beaver: 1975.
- Brook trout: 1975.
Those dates are not a complete adoption chronology for all nine entries. No equivalent dates are established here for the striped bass, working dog, bay scallop, Eurypterus remipes, common snapping turtle or nine-spotted ladybug. The snapping turtle has a separate, clearly stated date from DEC: 2006.
Quick reference for students, families and visitors
- Start with the formal answer: New York’s state animal is the beaver.
- Use the nine-item list only when explaining the broader group of animal-related symbols.
- Separate the two fish: striped bass is marine or saltwater; brook trout is freshwater.
- Keep “working dog” as a category rather than substituting a breed.
- Identify the bay scallop as the state shell.
- Describe Eurypterus remipes as an extinct marine arthropod fossil, also called a sea scorpion.
- Use “common snapping turtle” for the state reptile and note its 2006 adoption when a date is needed.
- Use “nine-spotted ladybug” for consistency, while recognizing “nine-spotted lady beetle” as DEC’s wording.
- Remember that the Assembly’s current overall inventory is 17 symbols, whereas an older DEC brochure lists 16.
These distinctions let you give a complete answer without suggesting that New York has a single legal category containing nine state animals. The official categories are separate, but together they form the state’s nine animal-related symbols.
