The ancient shark behind the “bigger than a boat” headline is Cosmopolitodus hastalis, a fossil species linked in one published evolutionary interpretation to the great white shark lineage. But the Peruvian skeleton at the center of the story was identified as a juvenile, and the study does not establish that this individual—or the species—was bigger than a boat.
Which ancient shark is the headline about?
It is Cosmopolitodus hastalis, an extinct broad-toothed lamnid shark known from fossils, including a well-preserved skeleton found in Peru’s Pisco Formation. A 2017 study described that skeleton and fish remains preserved in its stomach region.
The fossil’s preservation offers a glimpse of an ancient marine food web: INGEMMET, Peru’s geological and mining agency, said the fish remains shed light on the role of sardines around eight million years ago. The study involved paleontologists from the Museo de Historia Natural of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the University of Pisa, and INGEMMET.
Was the fossil shark bigger than a boat?
The published fossil study does not substantiate that comparison. The researchers identified the preserved shark as a juvenile based on its teeth; the specimen therefore cannot establish the maximum size of an adult of the species. The sources describing this fossil do not provide a dependable length for the individual or a supported adult length that can be compared with a boat.

A January 28, 2026 Daily Galaxy article used the boat comparison, but the primary fossil study located does not verify it. Without a documented measurement and a clearly defined boat comparison, the phrase should be treated as a headline claim, not a finding established by the published skeleton.
How is it related to the great white?
A 2012 study proposed that the white-shark lineage arose from C. hastalis and presented another fossil shark, Carcharodon hubbelli, as a transitional form between C. hastalis and the modern great white, Carcharodon carcharias. This is a scientific interpretation of evolutionary relationships, not proof that every C. hastalis individual was a direct ancestor of today’s great whites.

The terminology is not completely uniform across fossil references: different generic placements have been used for hastalis. One practical distinction from modern great-white teeth is that C. hastalis teeth lack the characteristic serrations. That tooth difference helps explain why the fossil is discussed as part of the great-white story while remaining distinct from the living species.

- It can show: a juvenile C. hastalis skeleton from the Pisco Formation, with fish remains preserved in the stomach region.
- It can contribute to: understanding ancient feeding relationships and the proposed evolutionary history of the white-shark lineage.
- It cannot establish: that this juvenile was larger than a boat, or provide a verified maximum adult size from the evidence described in the study.
The strongest conclusion is narrower than the headline: Peru yielded an unusually informative fossil of a juvenile ancient shark, and published research has proposed an evolutionary link between its species and the great-white lineage. The boat-sized claim remains unsupported by the cited fossil evidence.
