Nilgala Birding, Sri Lanka: Cuckoos, Woodpeckers and an Armchair Tick

A limited entrance-road visit to Nilgala, Sri Lanka, produced memorable cuckoos and woodpeckers, while a later taxonomic change created an armchair tick.

Birding in Nilgala, on the edge of Sri Lanka’s Gal Oya National Park, rewarded a short visit with an unusual concentration of cuckoo calls, several memorable woodpeckers and one species I added to my list only from an armchair. My account is deliberately personal rather than a complete checklist: without a car, I explored only the entrance road and did not reach farther into the woodland. The birds below are therefore records and impressions from that limited visit, not guarantees for every traveler or a current access guide.

What Nilgala was like on my visit

Nilgala woodland lies at the edge of Gal Oya National Park in Sri Lanka’s Monaragala District, Uva Province. I came away with the impression of a site visited less frequently by birders than better-known destinations such as Bundala National Park or Sinharaja. That is a characterization of my experience, not a measured comparison of visitor numbers.

The setting felt distinctive enough to keep expectations open. As I wrote after the trip, “This site is not unexplored, but the unique habitat and infrequent visitation compared to sites like Bundala National Park or Sinharaja means that many surprises are still possible here.” The sentence describes my perspective in the November 29, 2025 account; it should not be read as a statistical assessment of Nilgala’s visitation.

I stayed in a Department of Wildlife Conservation bungalow behind the reception. Because I did not have a car, my exploration stopped at the entrance road rather than extending into the park. That restriction shaped every observation: I was sampling a narrow, accessible slice of the woodland, not surveying Nilgala as a whole.

How much of Nilgala this account represents

A study abstract on the Nilgala Forest Area reported 12,432 hectares, with the work published by the Proceedings of International Forestry and Environment Symposium around 2013. That figure belongs to a herpetofaunal-diversity study and should be treated as the area reported by those authors at that time, not as a current legal boundary or a birding-site measurement.

Practical details can change. Lodging arrangements, road conditions, entry fees, permits, opening rules and the routes visitors may drive were not verified from current official sources for this account. A secondary destination page has reported that Nilgala was declared a Protected Forest Reserve on June 2, 2025, but the government instrument was not available to confirm that legal status. Anyone planning a visit should check the latest information directly with Sri Lanka’s relevant wildlife authorities before traveling.

For the same reason, this article does not promise that a particular bird will appear at the entrance road, or that a traveler can repeat my route without permission or a vehicle. It is a dated field narrative, useful for understanding the site’s possibilities and for deciding what to investigate before a future trip.

Why I called Nilgala “a land of cuckoos”

Cuckoos dominated my impression of the woodland. Some were birds I saw moving through foliage; others were encounters made almost entirely through sound. Keeping those categories separate matters, especially in dense habitat where a familiar call can travel much farther than the bird can be located.

Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo

A Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo regularly called outside my cabin. The repeated presence of that call made it one of the clearest signatures of the stay. “Regularly calling” is the observation I can support; it does not mean that every visitor will hear one, or that the species is continuously present around the bungalow.

  • Your one-stop solution: these binoculars absolutely for bird watching, cruising, hiking, and traveling, but they’re not just for the outdoors—catch every thrilling moment at sporting events, concerts, plays, and more. What's more? Don’t forget the simple pleasures: Keep them handy in the car glove box, use them during a layover at the airport, or explore your own backyard. Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

For a birder, this is a good reminder to treat accommodation as part of the field site. The sound outside the cabin was not a record from a deep trail or a distant sector of Gal Oya. It was an encounter generated by staying at the reception area, where listening could begin before walking the entrance road.

Banded Bay Cuckoo

Banded Bay Cuckoos moved through the foliage. Their movement was more tangible than a hidden call, but the vegetation still made the birds easy to lose. I remember them as active shapes threading through cover rather than as stationary, exposed subjects.

That distinction is useful when setting expectations. A site can produce a species without offering the kind of open view that makes identification effortless. In Nilgala, the reward was noticing a bird working through the leaves and accepting that the observation belonged to a brief window.

Common Hawk-Cuckoo

The call of the Common Hawk-Cuckoo was ubiquitous during my visit, yet the bird itself remained difficult for me to locate. Hearing it repeatedly did not convert into repeated visual records. This was the strongest example of why a Nilgala list should label heard and seen birds separately.

For anyone visiting, the lesson is not that the species is guaranteed. It is that a vocal bird may still be a search problem. Follow the call only as far as access and habitat allow, and record honestly whether the encounter was auditory, visual or both.

The woodpeckers that made the visit memorable

Nilgala’s woodpeckers supplied a different kind of excitement from the cuckoos. I highlighted three species, each memorable for a different reason, while keeping the comparisons in their proper context: these were my impressions from this visit, not an independently verified ranking of Sri Lankan woodpecker difficulty or size.

Streak-throated Woodpecker

I singled out the Streak-throated Woodpecker because I generally find it difficult to see in Sri Lanka. Its appearance at Nilgala therefore carried extra weight. “Difficult” describes my experience of finding it, not a formal national detectability score, but it explains why this bird stayed with me after a short roadside exploration.

Yellow-crowned Woodpecker

The Yellow-crowned Woodpecker stood out as a small woodpecker. Its size was part of the appeal: after listening for larger, more conspicuous birds, finding a compact species working in the woodland changed the pace of observation. I include it as one of the woodpecker highlights of the visit, not as evidence that the species is concentrated at the entrance.

Brown-capped Pygmy-Woodpecker

The Brown-capped Pygmy-Woodpecker was even smaller. That contrast — Yellow-crowned small, Brown-capped Pygmy-Woodpecker smaller still — gave the woodpecker sequence a clear narrative. Both observations came from the limited area I could reach, so they should be understood as possibilities suggested by the account rather than a promise of a roadside procession.

The sought-after trio, and the bird I missed

Nilgala was framed around three desirable species: Jungle Bush-Quail, Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon and Painted Francolin. I did not see all three. In particular, I missed Jungle Bush-Quail, which is an important part of the story because a birding account is also defined by absences.

The trio belongs to the site’s reputation as presented in my account; it is not a claim that I observed each member. Jungle Bush-Quail remained a target rather than a tick. Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon and Painted Francolin were identified as part of the sought-after group, but I do not turn that framing into personal sight records here.

That separation protects the usefulness of the narrative. A reader can arrive knowing which birds the account treats as attractive possibilities while understanding that limited access, time and luck can leave even a headline species unseen.

What “armchair tick” means in this story

The word “armchairs” in the title refers to a later list addition, not to a bird I watched at Nilgala. When I encountered the bird in question, Sri Lanka Shama was considered a subspecies of White-rumped Shama. Later taxonomic treatment recognized Sri Lanka Shama as a separate species. That change allowed me to add it to my country list from the comfort of an armchair.

In birding-list language, an “armchair tick” is a new list entry created by a taxonomic change or a review of an earlier record rather than by a fresh sighting. The underlying encounter may be genuine, but the list changes because the classification changes. Here, the important qualification is chronological: the taxonomic recognition came after my visit and after I had seen the bird under its earlier treatment.

This is why the armchair tick should not be counted among the Nilgala birds observed during the entrance-road outing. It is connected to the trip through the later name and list treatment, not through a new field observation at the site.

Planning a future birding visit without overpromising

If you use this account to shape a trip, treat it as a set of questions to verify rather than as a ready-made itinerary.

  1. Confirm current access first. Ask the responsible wildlife authorities about permission, opening arrangements, vehicle requirements, road access and any seasonal restrictions. My lack of a car limited me to the entrance road, but that personal circumstance is not a current rule.
  2. Check the status of the bungalow. I stayed in a Department of Wildlife Conservation bungalow behind reception. Availability, booking procedure and visitor eligibility can change, so confirm them before relying on accommodation at the site.
  3. Bring a Sri Lanka bird field guide. A field guide is the most practical preparation for separating similar woodland birds and for recording whether a species was heard or seen. No particular edition or retailer is established here, so check that the edition you choose is current and actually available.
  4. Plan for listening as well as scanning. The Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo and Common Hawk-Cuckoo experiences show how much of a visit may be auditory. Note the call, direction and context, then record clearly whether you obtained a visual confirmation.
  5. Keep targets and records separate. Jungle Bush-Quail, Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon and Painted Francolin may be presented as sought-after birds for Nilgala, but a target list is not a sightings list. Mark misses as misses.
  6. Recheck names before finalizing your list. Taxonomy can change, as the Sri Lanka Shama example demonstrates. Use an authoritative, current taxonomic reference when converting older records into a present-day list.

Guided bird-watching services are advertised for the Gal Oya and Nilgala area, so a guide may be an option for travelers who lack transport or want help interpreting calls. Availability, quality and current operating conditions require direct confirmation; the existence of a listing is not a recommendation or a guarantee of service.

What I would carry forward from the visit

Nilgala’s value, in my experience, was not a guaranteed sequence of rare sightings. It was the combination of an edge-of-park woodland setting, a surprisingly strong cuckoo presence, three distinctive woodpecker encounters and enough uncertainty to keep the visit open-ended. The entrance road alone produced a meaningful account, even though I could not drive farther into the park.

The site also rewarded intellectual flexibility. A bird can be present as a call but absent from view; a target can remain unseen; and a later taxonomic decision can change a list without changing what happened in the field. Those are not caveats added around the edges of the Nilgala story. They are the story: a limited visit that produced genuine surprises while leaving plenty of reasons to return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did you explore all of Nilgala woodland?

No. I explored only the entrance road because I did not have a car to enter farther into the park. The account is therefore a limited personal visit, not a complete site survey.

Which cuckoos featured in the Nilgala account?

The highlights were Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo, Banded Bay Cuckoo and Common Hawk-Cuckoo. The first was regularly calling outside the cabin, Banded Bay Cuckoos moved through foliage, and the Common Hawk-Cuckoo was often heard but hard to locate visually.

What is an armchair tick?

It is a list addition caused by a later taxonomic change rather than a new sighting. Sri Lanka Shama was treated as a White-rumped Shama subspecies when the bird was seen, then recognized as a separate species later.
