North Carolina Endangered Wildlife: What Lives Here and How to Check

North Carolina’s protected wildlife includes red wolves, birds, fish, bats, sea turtles, mussels, insects, reptiles, amphibians and plants. Learn how federal statuses work and how to verify current species near you.

North Carolina is home to federally protected wildlife ranging from the red wolf and forest birds to sea turtles, bats, fish, mussels, snails, insects, spiders, reptiles and amphibians. The most distinctive current example is the red wolf population in eastern North Carolina, but no single webpage should be treated as a complete, permanent statewide list.

“Endangered” and “threatened” are different legal categories, and a species’ status can change. For a current answer about a particular property, project or county, use the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s location-based process rather than relying on a general article.

What “endangered” means in North Carolina

Under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA), an endangered species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future. Those labels are not interchangeable: a threatened animal is protected, but it is not legally classified as endangered.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) Eastern North Carolina office groups federally protected plants and animals by birds, fish, insects and spiders, mammals, mollusks and snails, and reptiles and amphibians. Its page also separates species that are proposed for listing from “At-Risk” species. FWS explains that proposed, candidate and petitioned species are treated as At-Risk while state wildlife agencies lead conservation for them; that category is not the same as a final federal endangered or threatened listing. See the Eastern North Carolina Ecological Services species page for the office’s current categories.

A North Carolina state listing can differ from a federal listing. A question about animals protected under state law, animals covered by the federal ESA, or plants and animals together will produce different results. A distinct population segment or other geographic designation can also have its own federal status, so a general species label may not answer a project-level legal question.

Why there is no fixed statewide roster

The Eastern North Carolina page is a regional office resource, not a dated, exhaustive roster of every protected species in the state. Lists change when the Service proposes, lists, downlists, delists or reclassifies a species. They can also look different depending on whether the scope is federal ESA status, North Carolina status, animals only, or animals and plants.

For construction, land management or another activity that needs an official location-specific determination, FWS directs users to its Information for Planning and Consultation (IPaC) process. The Service’s Endangered Species: Species page explains how to obtain a species list tied to a project location. Treat a broad educational list as a starting point, not as a clearance that no protected species are present.

The red wolf: North Carolina’s signature endangered mammal

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is federally endangered and is the clearest example of a species whose current wild population is associated with North Carolina. FWS reports that the only current wild red wolf population is in eastern North Carolina, across Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington counties.

Current numbers, reported by population type

FWS’s August 2026 update reports 21 known or collared wild red wolves. Its estimate for the wild population is 22–23 adults and subadults plus 14–15 pups. The same update reports 295 red wolves in the Red Wolf SAFE captive program. These figures describe different parts of the recovery effort: do not add the captive count to the wild estimate or present the estimate as a precise statewide census.

Wild numbers are estimates that depend on monitoring and the age classes included. The August 2026 date belongs with the figures whenever they are quoted, because a later count may differ.

How the recovery program reached eastern North Carolina

FWS says red wolves were declared extinct in the wild in 1980. Releases in northeastern North Carolina began in 1987. The historical recovery account records 89 known, radio-collared wolves in 2011 and up to 120 estimated wolves in 2012. Those are milestones from the recovery program, not current population totals.

The North Carolina population is managed under a nonessential experimental population framework. That designation applies to the management of the reintroduced population in the specified area; it should not be read as a different endangered-species status for red wolves everywhere.

Habitat and diet

Red wolves use varied eastern North Carolina landscapes. FWS says home-range requirements vary with prey availability and that suitable southeastern habitat needs adequate food, water and cover. A typical diet includes white-tailed deer, raccoons, rabbits, rodents and nutria. The variety matters: the animal is not limited to one narrowly defined habitat type, and prey conditions influence how much space a pack needs.

For the species’ biology and current conservation information, consult FWS’s Red Wolf (Canis rufus) page and its Red Wolf Recovery Program page.

Where to learn about red wolves in person

FWS describes the Red Wolf Center outside Columbia, North Carolina, as a public education center with displays, a live pair and talks for school and other groups. Public hours and visiting arrangements can change, so check with the center before planning a trip rather than assuming it is open on a particular day.

Forest species and why status updates matter

The red-cockaded woodpecker illustrates how quickly an online list can become misleading. The Eastern North Carolina regional page still labels it endangered, while the species-specific FWS page reports the Service’s downlisting to threatened. For a current status, use the newer Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Dryobates borealis) species page and verify the effective federal rule or current official record if a regulatory decision depends on it.

This is not a reason to assume every regional-page label is outdated. It is a reason to check the species-specific update and its effective date whenever a status affects a permit, survey or management plan.

Protected wildlife extends far beyond large mammals

North Carolina’s federal listings include many kinds of organisms. The regional office groups them as follows:

Group shown by FWS Examples of the breadth of the listing What the grouping does not establish by itself
Birds Forest and coastal bird species appear in the regional protected-species categories. It does not identify which bird occurs on a particular parcel or state every bird’s habitat, pressure or recovery action.
Fish Freshwater and coastal fish are included among protected animals. A category heading is not a location-specific occurrence record.
Insects and spiders Small invertebrates are part of the federal listing, even when they receive less public attention. The grouped page alone does not provide enough species-level information to infer a range or conservation measure.
Mammals The red wolf is a prominent example, alongside other protected mammals. One mammal’s habitat or legal designation cannot be generalized to another.
Mollusks and snails Freshwater and other mollusks are represented in the listing. Presence must be checked against the species and project location.
Reptiles and amphibians The category includes protected reptiles and amphibians, including species associated with coastal and wetland environments. The category does not substitute for a current survey or IPaC species list.
Plants The office page covers protected plants as well as animals. A question limited to “animals” should not silently be presented as a complete plants-and-animals inventory.

These categories show why “endangered creatures” is a broader subject than a list of charismatic mammals. Coastal, riverine, wetland and forest communities can contain protected organisms that are easy to overlook. Species-specific pages are needed before asserting a precise habitat, threat or recovery action for any taxon other than the examples documented above.

How to find endangered or threatened species near you

  1. Define the legal scope. Decide whether you need federal ESA listings, North Carolina state listings, animals only, or plants and animals together. Write down the county, coordinates or project boundary and the date of your search.
  2. Use the regional page for orientation. Browse the Eastern North Carolina categories to see which taxonomic groups and status labels the regional office presents. Remember that it is a regional resource, not a guaranteed complete statewide roster.
  3. Request a location-specific list through IPaC. Follow the Service’s official species-information guidance to obtain a list tied to your project location. Use that result when a permit, consultation, environmental review or formal planning decision requires an official record.
  4. Open the species-specific page. Confirm whether the animal is endangered, threatened, proposed or otherwise At-Risk, and read the page’s date and geographic qualifications. Do not copy a status from an undated third-party list.
  5. Check for population or geographic qualifications. A species may have a distinct population segment or a special management framework. The red wolf’s nonessential experimental population designation is an example of why a statewide species name alone may be insufficient.
  6. Save the source and date. Keep the official page, the IPaC result and the search date with your project records. Recheck before acting if the project is delayed, because listings and rules can change.

How to read the labels without confusing them

Label Plain-language meaning How to use it
Endangered In danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Use this exact label; do not replace it with the broader word “protected.”
Threatened Likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future. It is a separate federal status, even though protections may apply.
Proposed The Service has proposed a listing but a final listing decision is not yet in effect. Do not present a proposal as a final endangered or threatened designation.
Candidate or petitioned (At-Risk) The regional page groups these with other At-Risk species while state agencies lead conservation. At-Risk is not the same as a final federal ESA status.
State-listed A designation under North Carolina law or policy. Check the state authority separately from the federal list.
Population or geographic designation A particular population or area may have a distinct treatment. Read the geographic qualification before applying a status to a project.

Responsible encounters with protected wildlife

Seeing a wild animal does not establish its legal status or prove that it belongs to a particular population. Observe from a distance, never feed or attempt to handle wildlife, and keep domestic animals under control near habitat used by wildlife. For a red wolf report or an unusual sighting, record the date and general location without approaching the animal; use the current FWS recovery-program information for appropriate contacts and guidance.

What a careful answer can—and cannot—claim

It is accurate to say that federally protected wildlife lives in North Carolina and that eastern North Carolina supports the only current wild red wolf population reported by FWS. It is not accurate to turn a regional grouped page into an exact statewide count, merge endangered and threatened animals into one status, or treat historical red wolf milestones as current numbers.

For a general wildlife lesson, start with the regional categories and the red wolf story. For a decision involving land, permits or a particular species, move to the current species page and a location-specific IPaC result, and preserve the date of every check.
