North Dakota Birding: Best Places, Seasons, Birds, and Access Rules

North Dakota’s Central Flyway wetlands, prairie, river valleys, and badlands support year-round birding. Use this guide to choose sites, seasons, routes, gear, and legal access.

North Dakota is a rewarding birding destination because the Central Flyway crosses a patchwork of prairie potholes, wetlands, grasslands, badlands, and river corridors. Plan around habitat and migration rather than a single “best” location: refuges concentrate wetland birds, prairie preserves suit grassland specialists, Theodore Roosevelt National Park adds riparian and badlands habitat, and the Garrison Dam area is especially useful for winter gulls and open-water birds.

North Dakota Tourism reports 376 recorded bird species and 216 species that nest or have nested in the state. The page does not state when those figures were compiled or how the checklist was defined, so treat them as tourism-guide counts rather than a newly verified inventory.

Why birding in North Dakota is worth the trip

North Dakota sits in the Central Flyway, one of the major migration corridors through the Great Plains. Its prairie potholes and shallow wetlands provide stopover habitat, while native and mixed-grass prairie supports nesting birds. River valleys add woodland and riparian cover that is scarce in open country, and the western badlands create a distinctly different landscape.

That variety lets one trip target several bird communities. Wetland edges can produce waterfowl, shorebirds, and marsh species; open prairie is the place to look for grassland birds and raptors; and wooded river habitat changes the possibilities again. North Dakota Game and Fish advises choosing a destination after researching the habitat preferred by the species you want to find, rather than assuming every site offers the same birds.

When to go birding in North Dakota

Spring migration

Spring is a strong choice for migration and for seeing birds in breeding plumage. State wildlife information describes millions of birds returning to wetlands, grasslands, and river valleys. At Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, spring is one of the peak periods for large concentrations on Lake Audubon and nearby wetlands. Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge also reports migration concentrations and offers spring Sharp-tailed Grouse lek viewing from blinds by reservation.

Lek arrangements are not casual drop-in activities. Confirm the refuge’s current reservation process, dates, and viewing instructions before traveling.

Summer nesting season

Summer favors many nesting grassland and wetland birds. Mixed-grass prairie, marsh edges, and river corridors can all be productive, but bird activity and access vary with weather, vegetation, and management conditions. Species lists published for Sullys Hill, Lostwood, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and Arrowwood describe birds reported at those places, not sightings guaranteed for every visit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fall migration

Fall brings another period of concentration at wetlands. Audubon National Wildlife Refuge identifies both spring and fall as peak times for large numbers on the lake and adjacent wetlands. Water levels, wind, and the timing of migration can change the mix from day to day, so recent observation reports are useful when deciding which refuge to visit.

Winter

Winter birding is practical where open water remains available and roads are safe. The Garrison Dam and Missouri River below the dam can hold gulls and waterfowl around open water. North Dakota Tourism also highlights Rough-legged Hawks and Snowy Owls in open prairie country. Cold, snow, and ice can close roads or make trails difficult, so check conditions before leaving and keep a flexible plan.

Where to go: North Dakota’s main birding areas

No statewide source provides a standardized ranking of “best” sites. Compare locations by habitat, target species, season, facilities, reservations, and driving effort.

Location Habitat and birding focus Documented access or facilities
Audubon National Wildlife Refuge Lake, adjacent wetlands, marsh and grassland habitat; especially useful during spring and fall concentration periods Eight-mile gravel auto-tour route, visitor center, and short Prairie Nature Trail. The visitor center is listed as open Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., year-round except federal holidays; confirm current hours and road conditions.
Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge Migration concentrations, marsh birds, and grassland birds Five-and-a-half-mile auto route. Spring Sharp-tailed Grouse lek viewing blinds are described as reservation-only; check current instructions.
Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge Mixed-grass prairie with numerous wetlands; prairie birds, waterfowl, and shorebirds A seven-mile auto route was described as open May through September in a 2016 Audubon feature. Because that route information is dated, verify seasonal access with the refuge.
Sullys Hill National Game Preserve A combination of woodland, mixed-grass prairie, and wetlands, offering a different mix from open prairie refuges The destination feature describes a four-mile wildlife drive and hiking trails.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park Badlands, Little Missouri River riparian habitat, prairie, and woodland; a broad habitat mix within the park The South Unit loop and river-area trails provide access. The North Unit road is out-and-back. Bird lists include scarce possibilities, so treat them as possibilities rather than promises.
Garrison Dam and Missouri River below the dam Open water, river habitat, gulls, and waterfowl; particularly useful in winter Trails are described for spring through fall. A 2016 Audubon feature reported more than 170 species and 14 kinds of gulls at the site; those are source-reported figures, not a current guaranteed checklist.

Audubon National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge is a practical first choice when you want a defined driving route and wetland concentration. The gravel auto tour allows scanning from multiple points without committing to a long hike, while the Prairie Nature Trail provides a short walking option. Spring and fall are the refuge’s documented peak periods for large concentrations on Lake Audubon and nearby wetlands.

Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge

Arrowwood combines a drivable route with marsh and grassland habitat. It is a useful option for migration and for arranging a Sharp-tailed Grouse lek viewing experience in spring. Because blinds require reservations, place that request before building the rest of your itinerary.

Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge

Lostwood’s mixed-grass prairie and many wetlands make it especially relevant when grassland birds and waterbirds are both priorities. The seven-mile route and May–September opening dates come from a 2016 destination feature, so treat them as planning leads and confirm the current route status with the refuge.

Sullys Hill National Game Preserve

Sullys Hill changes the habitat mix with woodland alongside prairie and wetlands. The described four-mile wildlife drive and hiking trails make it a reasonable complement to a trip focused only on open prairie, particularly when you want to compare how birds use different cover types.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The park’s badlands and Little Missouri River corridor add topography and riparian vegetation to a North Dakota birding trip. The South Unit loop and trails can produce prairie and woodland species while you travel through a landscape known for larger wildlife. The North Unit road is out-and-back, so allow time for the return drive. Published lists include rare or scarce possibilities; use them to set targets, not expectations.

Garrison Dam and the Missouri River

Open water below the dam can remain productive when smaller wetlands are frozen. Audubon’s 2016 feature reported more than 170 species and 14 kinds of gulls at the location, along with trails usable from spring through fall. Those figures describe the feature’s source list and should not be read as a promise that every visitor will see the same diversity.

Scenic birding drives

North Dakota Tourism and a 2026 state-government travel article describe six self-guided scenic drives in the Jamestown and Central Flyway region. They can structure a road trip when you want several stops instead of one refuge, but verify route details, closures, and current road conditions before departure.

How to choose a site for your target bird

  1. Name the target and its season. A winter gull search has different requirements from a summer grassland-bird search.
  2. Match habitat. Start with wetlands for waterfowl and shorebirds, mixed-grass prairie for prairie specialists, river corridors for woodland and riparian species, and open water for winter gulls and waterfowl.
  3. Check access. Note whether the site has an auto route, trails, a visitor center, or a reservation requirement.
  4. Estimate travel effort. A route length, return drive, gravel road, or winter closure can matter more than a long species list.
  5. Check recent observations. Use current eBird reports and the land manager’s notices to see what has been observed and whether roads or facilities are operating.

Land access: what you can and cannot do

Approximately 90% of North Dakota is privately owned, according to North Dakota Game and Fish. You need the owner’s permission to watch wildlife on private land. Do not assume that an unmarked field, shelterbelt, or roadside pull-off is open to birders.

The agency also states that PLOTS lands are open to walk-in hunting, not wildlife watching. PLOTS is therefore not a substitute for public birding property. Use public-land maps and follow the current rules of the refuge, park, game preserve, or other land manager instead.

Designated roads and routes may be the only permitted way to travel through a site. If a refuge lists a route as gravel or seasonal, plan for those conditions rather than driving around a closure or barrier.

Responsible birding and wildlife safety

  • Keep at least 75 feet (23 meters), or about two bus lengths, from wildlife. Site-specific refuge or park rules may require more distance.
  • Move slowly, keep conversations quiet, and stop or back away when a bird shows alarm behavior.
  • Stay on designated roads and trails where required, especially near nesting or lek areas.
  • Never feed, touch, chase, or handle wild birds.
  • Songbirds are often easiest to find during the first hours after dawn and before sunset. Vultures, hawks, and eagles are more likely to be active around midday, according to North Dakota Parks and Recreation guidance.
  • In winter, carry extra clothing, water, and a way to communicate; weather and road conditions can change quickly.

What to bring

You can start with your eyes alone. North Dakota Parks and Recreation summarizes the idea plainly: “All you need is a good pair of eyes (though binoculars sure help!) and a field guide.” Binoculars make distant birds easier to identify without approaching them, and a field guide helps compare shape, plumage, behavior, and habitat.

  • Binoculars: An optional aid for viewing birds at a respectful distance.
  • Field guide: A printed or digital identification reference; choose one that covers the region you will visit.
  • Weather and road gear: Layered clothing, sturdy footwear, water, sun protection, and supplies suited to gravel roads or winter conditions.
  • Observation tools: A notebook or phone for dates, locations, and behavior. A camera is optional; the available guidance does not make one necessary.
  • Current information: Recent eBird observations, refuge notices, park updates, species profiles, checklists, habitat pages, and public-land maps.

Using observations and checklists without overpromising

North Dakota Game and Fish recommends eBird for searchable recent observations and points birders to Cornell Lab’s All About Birds for identification help. Its wildlife-viewing resources also include species profiles, bird checklists, habitat information, and public-land mapping. Use these tools to refine a plan, but remember that a recent sighting is evidence of possibility, not a guarantee for your date.

Tourism and destination pages are useful for discovering routes and habitats. Their species totals and older site lists have different purposes: the statewide counts from North Dakota Tourism have no publication year or checklist methodology on the page, while the Garrison Dam figures and Lostwood route details come from a 2016 Audubon feature. Keep those qualifications attached whenever you use the numbers for planning.

Simple trip plans

Migration-focused weekend

Choose Audubon National Wildlife Refuge for its lake, wetlands, auto route, and short trail, then add Arrowwood if you can obtain a spring lek reservation. Build dawn and late-afternoon observation periods around the refuge visits, with midday time available for travel or raptor watching.

Prairie and wetland comparison

Pair Lostwood’s mixed-grass prairie and wetlands with Sullys Hill’s woodland, prairie, and wetland mix. Confirm Lostwood’s current route dates before committing to the drive, and use recent observations to decide whether to spend more time on prairie edges or water.

Badlands and river habitats

Use Theodore Roosevelt National Park as the anchor. The South Unit loop and Little Missouri River trails provide the main habitat contrast; the North Unit adds an out-and-back option if your schedule allows. Treat unusual species on published lists as bonus possibilities.

Winter open-water search

Target the Garrison Dam and Missouri River below the dam when open water is accessible. Add open-prairie roads only when conditions are safe, watching for Rough-legged Hawks and Snowy Owls without leaving public routes or approaching birds.

Common problems and practical fixes

The bird list is long, but birds are absent

Lists describe what has been reported over time. Recheck season, habitat, recent eBird observations, water conditions, and time of day before abandoning the site.

A route or facility is closed

Older destination features may not reflect current access. Confirm refuge hours, seasonal auto routes, reservations, closures, and road conditions with the land manager before traveling.

You are unsure whether land is public

Stop and verify ownership using public-land maps. Ask permission before entering private property; do not use PLOTS as a wildlife-viewing workaround.

A bird reacts to your presence

Increase the distance immediately, stop moving, lower your voice, and retreat if the bird continues to show alarm. A missed close view is better than disrupting feeding, nesting, or resting.
