Octopus Teeth Explained: Radulas, Beaks, and the Flapjack Exception

Most octopuses have tiny teeth on an internal radula and a separate hard beak. Here is how the two mouthparts work, how many teeth they may have, and why flapjack octopuses are different.

Yes—most octopuses have tiny teeth. They are arranged on a ribbon-like organ called a radula inside the mouth. Octopuses also have a separate, hard upper-and-lower beak that bites or crushes prey. Those two structures work together, but the beak is not a set of conventional teeth.

The most accurate short answer is “most octopuses,” not “all octopuses.” Monterey Bay Aquarium’s profile of the flapjack octopus notes that this cirrate octopus lacks a radula while retaining its beak. That exception is why a blanket claim that every octopus has teeth is misleading.

What “teeth” means in an octopus

When people ask whether an octopus has teeth, they are usually asking about the small, hard points inside its mouth. Those points belong to the radula, a flexible ribbon lined with repeated rows of tooth-like structures. The radula is hidden in the buccal cavity; you do not see it arranged along the outside of the animal’s arms or mouth.

Florida Atlantic University’s 2024 marine-lab explainer compares the radula’s appearance to a small chainsaw. That is a visual metaphor, not a claim that the organ is literally a mechanical saw. Its teeth are organized in rows and can scrape, impale, and help move food toward the throat.

Three tooth regions on the radula

The same explainer identifies three kinds of radular teeth: a central or rachidian tooth, lateral teeth on either side, and marginal teeth toward the edges. Their shapes differ among species. Researchers can count and characterize those shapes when distinguishing one octopus species from another.

A radula is not a single permanent row. FAU says the teeth are continually replaced, so worn structures can be renewed during the animal’s life. The exact arrangement and shape therefore matter more than treating “octopus teeth” as one identical design shared by every species.

Radula versus beak: two mouthparts, two jobs

The easiest way to understand an octopus mouth is to separate the scraping ribbon from the biting apparatus.

Structure What it is Primary job Important qualification
Radula A ribbon-like organ lined with rows of tiny teeth Scrapes or impales tissue and helps carry food inward Present in most octopuses, but absent in flapjack octopuses described by Monterey Bay Aquarium
Beak A hard, paired upper and lower structure Bites, cuts, or crushes prey It is not a conventional tooth row; it can remain even when a radula is absent

The beak supplies the strong bite. The radula handles the smaller-scale work of processing and transporting food. Calling the beak “the octopus’s teeth” blurs an important anatomical difference: the beak is a separate two-part structure, while the radula is the toothed ribbon.

How an octopus uses its mouthparts while feeding

Feeding mechanics vary with species and prey, so observations from one octopus should not be treated as a universal script. Work on the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, nevertheless shows how the two structures can cooperate.

  1. Prey is brought to the mouth. The arms and suckers handle prey and position it for the mouthparts. In the flapjack octopus profile, Monterey Bay Aquarium describes the animal trapping prey with its arms and moving the food to its beak.
  2. The beaks break the meal down. Marion Nixon’s 1968 University of London thesis abstract reports observations in which the lower and upper beaks broke muscle from live crabs and dead fish into rough cubes.
  3. Radular teeth engage the pieces. In those observations, the teeth appeared to impale tissue and help carry it into the buccal cavity. The radula’s scraping action can also loosen material from a piece of prey.
  4. Salivary structures assist with difficult food. FAU’s explainer describes a salivary papilla used when dealing with hard-shelled prey such as clams, mussels, and crabs. This detail belongs to the source’s general anatomical description; the exact sequence and emphasis can differ among species.

Altman and Nixon’s 1970 Journal of Zoology paper likewise examined the roles of chitinous beaks and the radula during feeding on crabs and fish. These studies support a division of labor, not the idea that every octopus processes every prey item in exactly the same way.

How many teeth does an octopus have?

There is no single tooth count that applies to every octopus. FAU says octopuses can have over 100 teeth, but that figure should be read as a reported possibility, not as a universal number for all species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several factors make a one-number answer unreliable:

  • Species differ. Tooth shape and arrangement vary, and those differences can help identify species.
  • The radula is renewed. Because teeth are continually replaced, a worn or developing row may not represent the same condition at every moment.
  • “Tooth” can mean different things. A count of radular teeth is not a count of beak components. The beak has an upper and a lower part, whereas the radula contains repeated tooth rows.
  • Some octopuses lack a radula. A flapjack octopus therefore cannot be assigned the same radular tooth count as an octopus that has the organ.

If you need a scientifically careful answer, say that some octopuses have more than 100 radular teeth, while the exact count depends on the species and what part of the radula is being counted. Do not present “over 100” as a standard for every octopus.

Why the flapjack octopus changes the answer

The flapjack octopus is the clearest documented exception in the supplied evidence. Monterey Bay Aquarium describes it as a cirrate octopus that lacks both an ink sac and a radula but retains a beak. Its arms trap prey and move it to that beak.

This means an octopus can have a functional biting structure without having radular teeth. The exception does not make the usual answer wrong; it makes the wording more precise. “Most octopuses have radular teeth and a beak” is supportable. “Every octopus has teeth” is not.

Because the flapjack’s beak remains, removing the radula from the mouth does not remove all mechanical processing. It does, however, change which structure can scrape or impale food. Claims about feeding in radula-bearing octopuses should not automatically be assigned to radula-less cirrate species.

Are octopus teeth visible?

Usually, no. Radular teeth sit inside the mouth on a concealed ribbon, so a casual view of an octopus does not reveal a neat row of teeth like those in a human smile. The beak is the harder, more prominent mouth structure, but it is also recessed and is not normally exposed while the animal is resting.

Close anatomical examination is needed to describe the radula’s central, lateral, and marginal teeth. The chainsaw comparison used by FAU refers to the repeated, serrated-looking arrangement under magnification or close inspection, not to a large saw projecting from the animal.

What the beak is made to do

The beak is a two-part upper-and-lower structure. FAU describes it as hard enough to crush prey such as clams, mussels, and crabs. In feeding observations of O. vulgaris, the beaks broke muscle into rough cubes before the radula helped move tissue inward.

It is useful to call the beak a biting or crushing apparatus rather than a tooth. Teeth are the repeated elements on the radula; the beak is a paired structure with a different form and role. Keeping those terms separate prevents two common errors: counting the beak as one giant tooth and assuming that a beak proves a species has a radula.

Why scientists study radular teeth

Radular teeth are informative because their shapes and arrangement vary among species. FAU notes that counting and characterizing them can help distinguish species. A specimen’s radula can therefore contribute to identification in the same way that other anatomical features do.

That use does not mean every tooth shape has a simple, one-to-one explanation such as “sharp teeth equal a particular diet.” The evidence summarized here supports variation and taxonomic value, while detailed links between a specific tooth design and a specific feeding strategy require species-level study.

Common misconceptions, corrected

“The beak is the octopus’s teeth.”

Not exactly. The beak is the hard upper-and-lower biting structure. The radula is the mouthpart lined with many tiny teeth.

“All octopuses have radular teeth.”

No. The flapjack octopus profile from Monterey Bay Aquarium says flapjack octopuses lack a radula but retain a beak. “Most” is the safer wording.

“Every octopus has exactly 100 teeth.”

No universal count is established here. FAU’s “over 100” figure is a general possibility, not a species-wide rule.

“You can see the teeth when an octopus opens its mouth.”

Radular teeth are internal and small. They are not an obvious external row.

“A feeding study on one species describes all octopuses.”

The detailed beak-and-radula observations come from Octopus vulgaris. They illustrate how those structures can work together, while other species may differ.

The precise answer to the question

Most octopuses do have teeth, but those teeth are tiny radular structures inside the mouth, not the hard beak. The radula’s rows can scrape, impale, and move food, while the upper and lower beaks bite or crush it. Tooth number and shape vary, and FAU reports that some octopuses can have more than 100 radular teeth. The flapjack octopus is an important exception: it lacks a radula but keeps its beak.

That wording answers both parts of the question accurately: yes for most octopuses, and no as an unqualified claim about every species.
