Ohio State Animals Explained: The 8 Official Animal Symbols (and Why the Number Isn’t 10)

Ohio’s state animal is the white-tailed deer, but the state also recognizes seven other animal-related symbols. Here are the official categories, adoption years and the reason authoritative lists stop at eight entries rather than ten.

Ohio has one legally designated state animal: the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), adopted in 1988. Ohio also recognizes other animal-related symbols in separate categories, including a bird, insect, reptile, amphibian, frog, official pet and fossil fish. This guide identifies those eight current animal-related designations and explains why an authoritative list does not contain ten different state animals.

What “Ohio’s state animal” actually means

In the singular, Ohio’s state animal is the white-tailed deer. Ohio Revised Code §5.032 gives that designation to Odocoileus virginianus and does not replace the state’s wildlife-management responsibilities. The designation is a state symbol, not a declaration that deer may be hunted, fed or handled without regard to wildlife rules.

The wording matters because Ohio’s official symbols are organized by category. The cardinal is the state bird, the ladybug is the state insect, the black racer is the state reptile, the spotted salamander is the state amphibian, the bullfrog is the state frog, a shelter pet is the official pet, and Dunkleosteus terrelli is the state fossil fish. Those labels are not alternative names for the state animal.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) presents these designations alongside plant symbols and other emblems. Counting only the animal-related entries shown in the current official material produces eight categories or entries, not ten separate species. The legally precise phrase for the collection is “Ohio’s animal-related state symbols.”

The eight current animal-related designations

Official category Symbol Scientific name or description Adoption year What the designation means
State animal (mammal) White-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus 1988 The sole singular legal state-animal designation.
State bird Cardinal Cardinalis cardinalis 1933 Ohio’s official bird, a separate designation from state animal.
State insect Ladybug Ladybug 1975 The official insect symbol.
State reptile Black racer snake Coluber constrictor constrictor 1995 The official reptile symbol.
State amphibian Spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum 2010 The official amphibian symbol.
State frog Bullfrog Bullfrog 2010 A frog-specific designation in addition to the broader amphibian category.
Official pet Shelter pet A category, not one species 2019 Recognizes adoptable companion animals from shelters.
State fossil fish Dunkleosteus terrelli Extinct armored fish 2019 A fossil symbol rather than a living animal.

Adoption years in the table are the years shown by ODNR or in the Ohio Revised Code. They are enactment dates for symbols, not dates of population surveys, conservation milestones or first discovery.

Profiles of Ohio’s official animal symbols

1. White-tailed deer: the state animal

The white-tailed deer is the answer to the question “What is Ohio’s state animal?” Ohio adopted it in 1988. The code’s designation applies to the species Odocoileus virginianus and explicitly preserves the wildlife division’s duty to manage the state’s wildlife. In practical terms, the symbol and the management program operate together: naming the deer as a state emblem does not suspend seasons, licensing, habitat rules or other requirements established under Ohio wildlife law.

When a quiz, classroom worksheet or travel article asks for Ohio’s state animal, “white-tailed deer” is the complete answer. Adding the cardinal, bullfrog or another symbol makes the answer less precise unless the question asks for Ohio’s broader animal symbols.

2. Cardinal: the state bird

Ohio’s cardinal is a bird designation, not a second state animal. ODNR’s overview gives 1933 as the adoption year, while the Revised Code identifies the cardinal as the official state bird. This is a useful example of why category labels should accompany every name in a list: “cardinal” alone could be mistaken for an entry in a general animal list, but “state bird” states exactly what Ohio recognized.

3. Ladybug: the state insect

The ladybug became Ohio’s state insect in 1975. ODNR includes it in the state-symbol overview with the other natural emblems. The designation identifies an insect category; it does not turn the ladybug into an additional state animal in the legal singular. Lists that merge mammals, birds and insects under one undifferentiated heading can therefore make Ohio appear to have several state animals when it has one state-animal designation and several other symbols.

4. Black racer: the state reptile

Ohio recognizes the black racer snake, Coluber constrictor constrictor, as its state reptile. The adoption year shown in the official material is 1995. “Black racer” is the common name used in the designation; the scientific name is useful when a reader needs to distinguish the official symbol from another snake that may share a similar common name.

5. Spotted salamander: the state amphibian

The spotted salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, was designated Ohio’s state amphibian in 2010. This is the broad amphibian category in the state’s list. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the state frog: frogs are amphibians biologically, but Ohio’s official categories separately name an amphibian and a frog.

6. Bullfrog: the state frog

The bullfrog also received an Ohio designation in 2010, specifically as the state frog. Because a frog is an amphibian, readers sometimes count the bullfrog and spotted salamander as competing amphibian choices. They are not competing choices in the code’s structure. Ohio uses “state amphibian” and “state frog” as two labels, with the spotted salamander filling the first and the bullfrog filling the second. The labels describe official categories; they do not create two species from one animal or make the bullfrog Ohio’s singular state animal.

7. Shelter pet: the official pet

Ohio added an official-pet designation for a shelter pet in 2019. Unlike the deer, cardinal, salamander and other species-based entries, “shelter pet” describes a source and status rather than one taxonomic species. It can include adoptable companion animals in shelters. That difference is why a list should identify it as a category and should not imply that Ohio selected one dog or cat breed as its state animal.

8. Dunkleosteus terrelli: the state fossil fish

ODNR lists Dunkleosteus terrelli as Ohio’s state fossil fish, adopted in 2019. It was an extinct armored fish, so this symbol represents Ohio’s prehistoric record rather than a living population. “Fossil fish” is an important qualifier: without it, a reader could assume the state has designated a currently living fish species. It also explains why this entry belongs in a complete animal-symbol guide while not being a candidate for the living state-animal title.

Why Ohio’s categories can look like ten animals

Several counting problems produce an inflated number. The first is treating every entry on ODNR’s state-symbols page as an animal. That page also covers plants and other natural emblems, so its full contents cannot be used as an animal-only count.

The second is counting a category label as though it were another species. The bullfrog appears under “state frog,” while the spotted salamander appears under “state amphibian.” Those are distinct official categories, but they are not two versions of the singular state-animal designation. Likewise, “shelter pet” is a broad category and Dunkleosteus terrelli is extinct.

The third is treating common names and scientific names as separate entries. White-tailed deer and Odocoileus virginianus refer to the same designated species. The same principle applies to the black racer and its scientific name, and to the spotted salamander and Ambystoma maculatum.

Finally, unofficial lists may mix Ohio symbols with proposed, historical or popular choices. Unless a source identifies the legal category and an adoption date, it should not be presented as one of Ohio’s current official animal designations.

Legal designations versus ODNR’s overview

Use the Ohio Revised Code when the question is whether a symbol is legally designated. Chapter 5 of the Ohio Revised Code covers state insignia and related designations, including the state animal, bird, reptile, amphibian, frog and official pet. The code is the stronger authority for the legal wording and categories.

Use ODNR’s State Symbols overview for the broader presentation of Ohio’s natural emblems and the adoption-year summary. ODNR’s page places animal entries beside plants and other symbols, so readers should filter by the category column rather than assume every item is an animal.

A reliable way to answer Ohio state-animal questions

  1. Read the question’s number and category. If it says “state animal,” answer with the white-tailed deer. If it asks for “animal symbols,” provide the categorized list.
  2. Keep the legal singular separate. Do not call the cardinal, ladybug, black racer, spotted salamander, bullfrog, shelter pet or fossil fish “state animals” without their category labels.
  3. Preserve qualifiers. Say “state fossil fish” for Dunkleosteus terrelli, “official pet” for shelter pet and “state frog” for bullfrog.
  4. Use adoption years as dates of designation. They do not indicate current abundance, conservation status or when the species first appeared in Ohio.
  5. Check the official source for updates. Confirm legal claims in Chapter 5 and use ODNR for the consolidated nature-symbol overview.

Using the symbols for teaching and family activities

The list works well as a classification exercise. Ask children to sort the entries into living species, a broad animal category and an extinct species. The resulting groups are: living species such as the deer, cardinal, ladybug, black racer, spotted salamander and bullfrog; the category “shelter pet”; and the extinct fossil fish Dunkleosteus terrelli.

A second activity is to match each name to its official category. This demonstrates that “animal” is a broad everyday word, while state law uses narrower labels. It also prevents the common mistake of counting the bullfrog twice simply because frogs are amphibians.

ODNR offers an Ohio State Nature Symbols Coloring Book as a related educational resource. Because the page covers plants and other symbols as well as animals, adults can use it to discuss the difference between the complete nature-symbol collection and the smaller animal-related set. Check the current ODNR page for availability and edition details before distributing or linking to a copy.

Bottom line on the “10 official state animals” title

Ohio does not have ten separate legal state animals in the official material covered here. It has one state animal—the white-tailed deer—and seven additional animal-related designations: state bird, insect, reptile, amphibian, frog, official pet and fossil fish. Calling the collection “Ohio’s animal-related state symbols” is accurate; calling every entry “the state animal” is not.
