Old English Sheepdog: Breed Characteristics, Grooming and Care

The Old English Sheepdog can be an affectionate, intelligent family dog—but its dense double coat requires thorough weekly grooming, and its 60–100-pound size makes exercise, training, veterinary care, transport, and budgeting serious commitments.

The Old English Sheepdog is best suited to a household that can treat grooming as a weekly obligation, not an occasional beauty treatment. This intelligent, affectionate herding breed can make a rewarding family companion, but its 60–100-pound adult size, dense double coat, exercise needs, health-care responsibilities, and lifetime costs require serious preparation.

The Old English Sheepdog can be a loving, intelligent family companion, but it is not a low-maintenance “shaggy dog.” The central question is whether your household can consistently provide thorough, weekly coat care, regular exercise, varied training, weight-aware feeding, preventive veterinary care, and the budget required for a large dog for roughly 10–12 years or more.

Adults generally weigh about 60–100 pounds. Females are typically at least about 21 inches tall at the shoulder and males at least about 22 inches. That size affects everyday life: food, transport, sleeping space, crates, fencing, grooming equipment, veterinary handling, and the physical strength needed to manage the dog all become more demanding.

Old English Sheepdog at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Breed group Herding Group
Adult size Approximately 60–100 pounds; females generally at least 21 inches and males at least 22 inches
Life expectancy Typically 10–12 years
Coat Dense double coat with a soft undercoat and a harsher, water- and dirt-repellent outer coat
Exercise Regular physical activity, interaction, and training; individual energy levels vary
Grooming Thorough full-coat grooming down to the skin at least weekly, with additional brushing and possible professional grooming
Best fit Households prepared for substantial grooming, large-dog logistics, daily involvement, and long-term costs

Temperament: affectionate and intelligent, but still an individual dog

The Old English Sheepdog is an intelligent, agreeable, watchful breed. Many are affectionate with their families and can be good family dogs. Those qualities do not make every individual automatically calm, easy to train, or safe without supervision.

Temperament is influenced by genetics, early experiences, socialization, training, health, and the quality of the breeding or adoption situation. A responsible owner should assess the particular dog rather than relying on a breed stereotype. Children should be taught appropriate behavior around dogs, and interactions should be supervised—especially because a large, enthusiastic dog can knock over a small child without intending harm.

Expect a dog that wants to participate in family life. An Old English Sheepdog may settle indoors after adequate activity, but a yard does not replace interaction, training, walks, play, and opportunities to use its mind.

Size, home life, and practical fit

A 60–100-pound dog needs room to move safely and a household that can accommodate its body. Before bringing one home, consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transport: Can your vehicle safely accommodate a large dog, a crate, and grooming or travel equipment?
  • Sleeping arrangements: Is there a durable, comfortable place for a large dog to rest?
  • Floor and furnishings: Are you prepared for mud, wet fur, shedding, and a dog that may brush against furniture and doorways?
  • Handling: Can the adults in the household safely manage the dog on leash and assist with grooming or veterinary care?
  • Outdoor setup: Is fencing secure and appropriate for a large, athletic dog?
  • Weather: Can you provide exercise and cooling or shelter during hot, humid, cold, or wet conditions?

The long coat can hold dirt, debris, fecal matter, urine, and moisture when it is not maintained. This is not merely a cosmetic issue: neglected coat care can make the dog uncomfortable, hide skin problems, and turn ordinary household care into a difficult and expensive recovery project.

Exercise: regular activity without a one-size-fits-all quota

Old English Sheepdogs need a consistent routine, but there is no reliable universal mileage or minute target for every dog. Activity should be adjusted for age, health, conditioning, weather, and the individual dog’s energy level. A practical routine can combine:

  • Walks with opportunities for calm sniffing and polite leash behavior
  • Interactive play appropriate to the dog’s size and physical condition
  • Short training sessions and problem-solving games
  • Supervised activities that build coordination and confidence
  • Quiet time and practice settling indoors

Puppies, senior dogs, overweight dogs, and dogs with health problems need especially careful progression. Avoid suddenly increasing strenuous exercise, and ask your veterinarian how to structure activity if the dog is growing, recovering from illness, or showing pain, stiffness, unusual fatigue, or exercise intolerance.

Training and socialization

The breed is intelligent and often biddable, but repetitive, robotic drills can become boring. Training is more useful when it is positive, varied, brief enough to maintain attention, and connected to real household needs.

Priorities for an Old English Sheepdog

  • Reliable name recognition, recall, and basic cues
  • Walking politely without allowing a large dog to drag the handler
  • Calm greetings and four-paws-on-the-floor behavior
  • Settling on a mat or bed while people eat, work, or receive visitors
  • Comfort with handling of the feet, ears, mouth, tail, and entire body
  • Standing calmly for brushing, drying, nail care, and veterinary examination
  • Leaving household objects, food, and other animals alone when asked

Begin socialization early and proceed thoughtfully. Well-run puppy classes can help, provided the environment is safe and the instructor uses humane, reward-based methods. Socialization does not mean forcing a puppy to greet every person or dog; it means helping the dog form calm, positive associations with people, places, surfaces, handling, sounds, and ordinary life.

Grooming is the defining care obligation

The Old English Sheepdog has a dense double coat: a softer undercoat beneath a harsher outer coat that helps repel water and dirt. The American Kennel Club advises that the entire coat be groomed thoroughly down to the skin at least once a week. A quick pass over the visible top layer is not the same as maintaining the whole coat.

For a long-coated pet, regular line brushing is the most useful concept. Work in sections, parting the hair so you can see and reach the skin. Brush a small area, move the part, and continue methodically across the body. Pay particular attention to friction and moisture zones such as behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, on the chest, belly, feet, and hindquarters.

A realistic weekly grooming routine

  1. Choose a calm, well-lit location. Give the dog a non-slip surface and take breaks before frustration builds.
  2. Separate the coat into sections. Do not rely on brushing only the surface.
  3. Line-brush down to the skin. Use small, controlled strokes rather than aggressively pulling through tangles.
  4. Check your work with a comb. A comb passing through the coat can help reveal areas the brush missed.
  5. Inspect high-risk areas. Look for mats, moisture, skin irritation, foreign material, parasites, and painful spots.
  6. Keep the feet tidy. Trimming excess hair around the feet can reduce the amount of dirt and moisture tracked indoors.
  7. Make grooming routine from puppyhood. Reward stillness and cooperation so grooming does not become a struggle as the dog grows.

Brushing is still necessary between baths and haircuts. Some pet owners use a shorter or “puppy” trim because it makes maintenance more manageable; this does not eliminate the need for regular brushing and should be discussed with a groomer who understands dense double coats. Shaving should not be treated as the default solution to ordinary maintenance problems.

When to hire a professional groomer

Professional grooming may be appropriate several times per month over the life of the dog, depending on coat length, growth, lifestyle, matting tendency, and how much care the owner can safely perform. Use a qualified groomer if you are inexperienced, the dog becomes distressed, you cannot reach the skin effectively, or the coat is severely matted.

Do not force tight mats out at home. Matting can pull on the skin, conceal sores, and make brushing painful. A groomer or veterinarian can determine the safest way to address extensive matting. Ask prospective groomers about their experience with large, dense-coated dogs, how they handle anxious animals, and what they do if they find skin problems.

Feeding and weight management

Most Old English Sheepdogs should do well on a complete, high-quality commercial diet or on a home-prepared diet formulated and approved by a veterinarian. Select food appropriate for the dog’s life stage, and account for treats, chews, table food, and training rewards when considering total calorie intake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some individuals are prone to becoming overweight. Excess weight adds stress to a large dog’s joints and can make exercise and grooming more difficult. Monitor body condition, not just the number on the scale, and ask your veterinarian to help set feeding amounts if the dog is gaining weight, unusually hungry, growing rapidly, pregnant, highly active, or managing a medical condition.

Fresh water should always be available. Do not add supplements or use a therapeutic diet simply because a product is marketed for a large breed; discuss those choices with your veterinarian.

Health screening and preventive veterinary care

Responsible breeding can reduce risk, but no screening program guarantees that an individual puppy will remain healthy. The AKC identifies screening areas that may include hip dysplasia, eye conditions, autoimmune thyroiditis, cardiac anomalies, hereditary deafness, cerebellar ataxia, primary ciliary dyskinesia, drug sensitivity, and exercise-induced collapse.

The Old English Sheepdog Club of America’s Canine Health Information Center requirements include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hip evaluation
  • An eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist
  • Evaluation for autoimmune thyroiditis
  • An exercise-induced collapse, or EIC, DNA test
  • MDR1 testing

The club also lists optional testing involving cardiac health, congenital deafness, cerebellar degeneration, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. A CHIC number documents that the required tests were completed and made available; it is not a guarantee that every result is normal.

Questions to ask an Old English Sheepdog breeder

  • What are the registered names of the sire and dam?
  • Can you provide the actual health-test documentation and registry records?
  • What are the parents’ hip evaluation results through OFA or an accepted equivalent?
  • Do the parents have current eye examinations from a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist?
  • What thyroid, EIC, and MDR1 documentation is available?
  • Have additional cardiac, hearing, cerebellar-degeneration, or PCD tests been performed?
  • What does the written contract cover, including health guarantees and return requirements?
  • Will you take the dog back or help rehome it if the owner can no longer keep it?
  • How are the puppies raised, handled, socialized, and matched with homes?

Routine veterinary care remains important after purchase or adoption. Discuss vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, body condition, reproductive decisions, exercise, and any changes in gait, hearing, vision, skin, digestion, or behavior.

Finding a responsible breeder or adopting

The Old English Sheepdog Club of America offers breeder-referral, rescue, education, and health resources. Its breeder directory is a starting point—not a certification. The club expressly cautions that directory inclusion does not guarantee a breeder’s quality, ability, or the health of a puppy.

Independently verify records, visit or ask detailed questions about the dogs’ living conditions, observe the parents when possible, review the contract, and pay attention to whether the breeder asks you thoughtful questions as well. Be cautious of anyone who refuses to show documentation, will not discuss health problems honestly, has puppies constantly available, or pressures you to make a quick payment.

Adoption is another legitimate route. Contact Old English Sheepdog rescue organizations, general shelters, and local humane societies. An adult dog may be a better fit for a household that wants a clearer idea of size, temperament, and grooming tolerance, although every rescue dog still needs an individual assessment and a transition plan.

Time and lifetime cost

The purchase or adoption fee is only one part of the budget. Ongoing expenses can include:

  • Age-appropriate food and treats
  • Brushes, combs, shampoo, towels, dryers, and other grooming supplies
  • Professional grooming when home care is insufficient
  • Routine, dental, emergency, and specialist veterinary care
  • Vaccinations and parasite prevention
  • Training classes, enrichment, collars, leads, beds, crates, and replacement equipment
  • Transport, boarding, dog walking, or pet sitting

There is no responsible single annual cost estimate without knowing your location, grooming arrangement, insurance choices, coat length, veterinary prices, and the dog’s health. Plan for both predictable recurring expenses and a substantial emergency reserve. If considering pet insurance for large dogs, compare exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles, reimbursement structures, eligibility rules, and how hereditary or pre-existing conditions are treated. Policy terms vary and should be read directly before enrollment.

Is an Old English Sheepdog right for you?

This breed may suit you if you:

  • Want a large, involved companion rather than an independent yard dog
  • Can commit to a thorough weekly grooming session and additional coat maintenance
  • Have time for daily activity, training, and family interaction
  • Can manage a 60–100-pound dog physically and financially
  • Are prepared to supervise children and continue training throughout the dog’s life
  • Can budget for professional grooming and unexpected veterinary care

It may be a poor match if you want a low-shedding or low-maintenance dog, cannot reliably groom a dense coat, expect a backyard to provide enough exercise, travel frequently without reliable care, or would struggle to handle a large dog during illness, injury, or behavioral problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Old English Sheepdog’s appeal is real: many are affectionate, clever, watchful, and deeply connected to their families. But the coat and body size are not minor details. If you can make grooming, training, exercise, weight control, veterinary care, and long-term budgeting part of normal life, the breed can be a rewarding companion. If weekly full-coat maintenance is unrealistic, choosing a different breed is the kinder decision for both household and dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Old English Sheepdogs good family dogs?

Yes, many Old English Sheepdogs are affectionate and family-oriented, but no breed is automatically safe or easy with children. Supervise interactions, teach children how to behave around dogs, and provide early socialization and humane training.

How often does an Old English Sheepdog need grooming?

Plan on a thorough full-coat grooming session at least weekly, working down to the skin in sections. Brushing is also needed between baths and haircuts, and some dogs may need professional grooming several times per month depending on coat length, lifestyle, and the owner’s skill.

Do Old English Sheepdogs need a lot of exercise?

Not necessarily. Activity levels vary. Most need consistent exercise, play, training, and family interaction, but the routine should be adjusted for age, health, conditioning, weather, and the individual dog. A yard alone is not enough.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does a CHIC number guarantee a healthy Old English Sheepdog?

No. A CHIC number documents completion and publication of specified health tests; it does not guarantee that every result is normal or that a puppy will never develop a health problem.

What health records should an Old English Sheepdog breeder provide?

Ask for registered parent names, original hip, eye, thyroid, EIC, and MDR1 documentation where applicable, plus the contract, return policy, socialization practices, and lifetime support plan. Verify the records independently rather than relying only on directory membership or verbal assurances.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose an Old English Sheepdog only if your household is ready for a large dog and a dense coat that needs thorough grooming down to the skin at least weekly. Affectionate temperament and family appeal do not remove the need for socialization, training, daily involvement, weight management, health screening, professional grooming when necessary, and a realistic 10–12-year budget.
