The strongest documented cases come from different databases, zoos, countries and record systems, so they cannot be placed in a single, definitive order. The examples below are five notable longevity cases, with each age tied to its source, date and claim scope.
The reported ages range from 60 to 77 years. Several chimpanzees were wild-born or had estimated birth dates, which means an age may be an informed estimate rather than a precisely documented birthday. A record age should therefore be read with its qualification attached: who reported it, when, and what population the claim covers.

What “oldest chimpanzee on record” actually means
“Oldest” can describe several different things. It may mean the oldest age listed by a record-keeping organization, the oldest individual in a particular zoo association, the oldest chimpanzee in a regional database, or the oldest animal documented at death. Those are not interchangeable categories.

Wild-born chimpanzees often arrive with an estimated age based on field observations, dental development, physical condition or information from people who knew the animal. Even when a zoo assigns an official birthday, that date can be a practical convention rather than proof of a precise birth day.
#1 Best Overall
For that reason, the cases in this article are presented as documented examples, not as a strict global top-five ranking. Living status is also time-dependent: an animal described as living in one announcement may later die, while an older age may be a historical snapshot rather than a current figure.
Five documented chimpanzees with exceptional ages
| Chimpanzee | Reported age | Date or period | Status in the cited account | Birth-date certainty | Scope of the claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Little Mama | 77 | March 10, 2017 | Status at a later date is not established here | Estimated; official birthday adopted by her park | Guinness World Records’ captivity record |
| Susie | 71 | May 21, 2025 | Living in the birthday announcement; later status is not established by the primary source used | Born in 1954, according to Sunset Zoo | Oldest chimpanzee in Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) care at that time |
| Bubbles | 63 | February 5, 2026 | Living in Zoo Miami’s announcement | Estimated birth in January or February 1963 | Oldest chimpanzee under human care listed in ZIMS in North America |
| Cobby | 63 | Died June 5, 2021 | Deceased | Not specified in the cited notice | Oldest male chimpanzee in an accredited North American zoo, according to San Francisco Zoo |
| Bessie | 60 | 2018 account | Described as living at that time | Historical age; precision not specified | One of the oldest living chimpanzees in human care, according to Taronga Zoo |
Little Mama: 77 years in the Guinness record
Guinness World Records reported Little Mama as 77 years old on March 10, 2017, under its record category for the oldest chimpanzee in captivity ever. That figure is unusually well known, but it is not based on a documented birth certificate.
Jane Goodall estimated Little Mama’s age at 30 to 35 years in 1972. Lion Country Safari used the midpoint, 32, for its working calculation and selected February 14 as her official birthday. Guinness then used that adopted age and date when recording her as 77 in 2017.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The important qualification is that 77 is an age calculated from an expert estimate and an institutional birthday convention. The Guinness entry establishes the reported age on its record date; it does not, by itself, establish Little Mama’s final age at death or prove that no chimpanzee elsewhere lived longer under a different record system.
Susie: 71 in Sunset Zoo’s 2025 announcement
Sunset Zoo’s birthday announcement on May 21, 2025, said Susie was 71. The zoo gave her birth year as 1954 and said she arrived at the zoo in 1974. It described her as the oldest chimpanzee in Association of Zoos and Aquariums care at the time of that announcement.
This is an AZA-care claim, not a worldwide ranking. A chimpanzee outside AZA institutions, or one listed in another regional system, could fall outside the comparison. The 2025 announcement documents Susie’s age at that moment; the primary notice used for this account does not establish her later final lifespan, so no death date or age at death should be inferred from it.
Susie’s case also shows why the date of an announcement matters. “71” is accurate for the zoo’s 2025 birthday communication, but it should not automatically be presented as her current age years later without an updated source.

Bubbles: 63 in the North American ZIMS listing
Zoo Miami announced on February 5, 2026, that Bubbles was 63. The zoo estimated that she was born in January or February 1963. Its statement said: “At 63 years old, Bubbles is the oldest chimpanzee under human care listed in ZIMS (Zoological Information Management Software) in North America!”
Every part of that sentence narrows the claim. It concerns chimpanzees under human care, only those listed in ZIMS, and North America. It is not a claim about every chimpanzee in the world, every historical animal, or every database. The estimated birth window also means the exact day and month are not known.
Bubbles’ age is therefore best described as a 63-year-old estimate reported by Zoo Miami in 2026, paired with a database-specific regional distinction. If a later ZIMS update records an older animal or changes an age estimate, the distinction could change without contradicting the 2026 announcement.
Cobby: 63 at death in 2021
San Francisco Zoo & Gardens reported that Cobby died on June 5, 2021, aged 63. The zoo described him as the oldest male chimpanzee in any accredited North American zoo.
Cobby’s figure differs from the living-animal announcements because it is an age at death, not an age observed on a birthday. It is also limited to males and accredited North American zoos. That makes it a strong institutional longevity record within a defined category, but not proof of the oldest chimpanzee of either sex worldwide.
Because his death date is documented, Cobby’s 63 years can be stated as a completed lifespan in the cited account. That does not make it directly comparable with Bubbles’ 63, which was her reported age while living in 2026 and was accompanied by an estimated birth period.
Bessie: 60 in Taronga Zoo’s 2018 account
Taronga Zoo’s 2018 account reported that Bessie was 60 and described her as one of the oldest living chimpanzees in human care at that time. The same account said Lulu was believed to be 58 and Spitter was believed to be 50.
Bessie’s age is a historical snapshot. It tells readers what Taronga reported in 2018, not how old she would be today and not whether she remained the oldest later. The wording “one of the oldest” is deliberately less absolute than “the oldest”: it recognizes that records from other institutions may have involved animals of similar or greater age.

The account also illustrates how institutions may use “believed to be” when a complete birth record is unavailable. That wording should be retained rather than converted into an exact, independently verified birth date.
Why the ages cannot be ranked cleanly
Estimated birthdays change the precision
Little Mama’s 77-year figure began with Jane Goodall’s estimate that she was 30 to 35 in 1972. The park selected 32 as a midpoint and assigned an official birthday. Bubbles’ birth was placed in January or February 1963, rather than on a known day. In both cases, the age is useful and documented, but it carries uncertainty that a precise birth record would not.
The records cover different populations
Little Mama’s entry is a Guinness captivity record. Susie’s 2025 distinction applied to AZA care. Bubbles’ applied to ZIMS-listed chimpanzees under human care in North America. Cobby’s applied to male chimpanzees in accredited North American zoos. Bessie’s description concerned living chimpanzees in human care in a 2018 Taronga account. These scopes overlap, but none includes exactly the same animals.
Living ages and completed lifespans are different measures
A living chimpanzee’s age is usually reported as of an announcement date. A deceased chimpanzee’s age at death is a completed lifespan. Treating those figures as if they were measured in the same way can create a misleading ranking, especially when one age is estimated and another is tied to a documented death date.
A Japan-specific longevity record: Jhonny
Jhonny provides an important additional comparison, but he should not be inserted into a worldwide top-five list. A Kyoto University Wildlife Research Center summary of a 2019 study reported that Jhonny lived an estimated 68 years and identified that lifespan as a longevity record for chimpanzees in Japan.
Best Value
He was wild-born, so the 68-year figure is an estimate rather than a precisely documented birth-to-death interval. The claim is country-specific and research-based: it establishes a Japanese record in the cited study summary, not a global record. Jhonny’s case demonstrates how a regional record can be older than some zoo examples while still belonging to a different evidence category.
How old was the oldest chimpanzee?
The answer depends on which record definition you mean:
- For the Guinness captivity record: Little Mama was reported as 77 on March 10, 2017, based on an estimated age and an adopted official birthday.
- For a recent AZA-care announcement: Susie was reported as 71 by Sunset Zoo on May 21, 2025.
- For a current North American database claim in the cited announcement: Bubbles was reported as 63 by Zoo Miami on February 5, 2026, as the oldest ZIMS-listed chimpanzee under human care in North America.
- For a documented death in an accredited North American zoo: Cobby died at 63 on June 5, 2021.
- For a historical living-care account: Bessie was reported as 60 by Taronga Zoo in 2018.
- For a Japan-specific research record: Jhonny’s estimated 68-year lifespan was reported in a Kyoto University Wildlife Research Center summary of a 2019 study.
These answers are all valid within their stated boundaries. None supports a definitive worldwide ranking of the five oldest chimpanzees ever.

What these exceptional ages show
Chimpanzees can reach ages far beyond the ordinary expectations people may have from shorter-lived examples, but exceptional individuals should not be mistaken for a population average. The documented cases show longevity across several settings: long-term zoo care, accredited facilities, a regional database and a country-specific research record.
The safest way to report any “oldest chimpanzee” claim is to keep four details together: the animal’s reported age, the date or death date, whether the birth information is estimated, and the population covered by the record. Removing any one of those details can turn a carefully limited institutional statement into an unsupported global superlative.
