A 7.3-foot (2.2-meter) hoodwinker sunfish washed ashore at Gearhart Beach, Oregon, on June 3, 2024. New Zealand-based researcher Marianne Nyegaard identified it from photographs and believed it may be the largest hoodwinker sunfish ever sampled—but that is a qualified assessment, not a verified record.
The Associated Press reported the fish’s measurement based on information from Seaside Aquarium. Its identity, the size assessment, and the circumstances of the stranding each have important limits: the fish was identified from photographs, and reports did not establish why it came ashore or where it came from.
What is a hoodwinker sunfish?
The hoodwinker sunfish (Mola tecta) is a species distinct from the more familiar ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Research published in 2017 established M. tecta as a separate species using genetic sampling and observation, as summarized in the Associated Press report.
The name tecta refers to “hidden” or “disguised.” Seaside Aquarium’s account described the species as having been “hiding in plain sight” before it was recognized as distinct.

Was the Oregon fish really the largest?
Nyegaard believed the Gearhart fish may have been the largest hoodwinker sunfish ever sampled, according to Seaside Aquarium’s report. Keep the qualification: the reviewed reports do not establish a certified size record, and “largest yet sampled” is not the same as a definitive claim about the largest fish ever found.

| The fish measured 7.3 feet (2.2 meters), according to the Associated Press reporting aquarium information. | A formal record verifying it as the largest hoodwinker sunfish. |

Why the identification drew attention
Hoodwinker sunfish had also stranded in California and Alaska, according to the aquarium account. The aquarium suggested that earlier Pacific Northwest specimens may have been mistaken for the more common ocean sunfish. That is an inference from the aquarium, not a confirmed identification of those earlier fish.
