Orphek Omini 77mm Magnetic Lens Kit for Aquarium Photography: Setup, Filters, and Buying Checks

A practical, evidence-based guide to Orphek’s Omini 77mm Magnetic Lens Kit: its macro, orange, and yellow filters, direct camera and magnetic tank mounting, compatibility checks, setup, safety, and buying considerations.

Orphek’s Omini 77mm Magnetic Lens Kit is a three-filter accessory for photographing, viewing, and performing some maintenance tasks in reef aquariums. It combines a 77mm macro lens with orange 15000K and yellow 20000K color lenses. You can screw the filters onto a camera lens with a 77mm filter thread, or use the supplied magnetic base and magnet on aquarium glass or acrylic up to the manufacturer’s stated 15mm thickness limit. Those specifications come from Orphek; the available material does not independently verify sharper images, better color accuracy, magnetic holding strength, or scratch resistance.

What the Omini kit is designed to do

The product name is spelled “Omini” in Orphek’s product materials, although some references and the original title use “Omni.” It is an optical accessory rather than a camera, light, or microscope. Orphek positions it for coral and aquarium photography, video, visual inspection, and selected maintenance work where a close view through the aquarium wall is useful.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The kit gives you two ways to place a filter in the optical path. A 77mm filter can be attached directly to a compatible DSLR camera lens. Alternatively, the magnetic holder can sit across the aquarium wall: the base remains outside, the companion magnet is placed inside, and the lens is held against the glass or acrylic. The latter method can be useful when you want to look through the filter without mounting it on a camera, but the manufacturer’s stated 15mm limit is a specification to check, not an independently tested guarantee.

Choose the mounting method before you buy

Your camera’s filter-thread diameter and your aquarium’s wall thickness determine whether the kit can be used as advertised. Decide which method you expect to use most often, then verify the relevant measurement rather than relying on the camera model name or a visual guess.

Use method What must match Best fit for Important limitation
Direct camera attachment A 77mm filter thread on the camera lens Handheld photographs or video where the filter travels with the lens A lens with another thread size will not screw directly onto the kit
Magnetic aquarium mounting Glass or acrylic wall no thicker than Orphek’s stated 15mm (0.59in) maximum Viewing or shooting through a fixed position at the aquarium wall Actual holding force, seal behavior, and scratch protection were not independently tested

Check the camera thread

  1. Remove the front cap from the lens you plan to use.
  2. Look for the filter symbol and diameter printed on the lens barrel or inside the cap. The required marking is 77mm, often shown as a diameter symbol followed by 77.
  3. Do not confuse focal length, such as 50mm, with filter-thread diameter. They are different specifications.
  4. If your lens is smaller, verify a correctly sized step-up ring for that exact lens and the kit before ordering. A shop-page customer report described filters that did not directly fit a 55mm Sony Alpha A7III lens, while the customer said the magnetic holder made the setup work. That single report is not a compatibility test or a universal workaround.
  5. Check for clearance around the lens hood, front element, and any existing protective filter. A ring or stacked filter can change how a hood fits and may add vignetting on a wide-angle lens.

Check the aquarium wall

  1. Confirm whether the panel is glass or acrylic; those are the materials Orphek lists.
  2. Measure the actual wall thickness at the intended mounting location. The stated ceiling is 15mm, equivalent to 0.59 inches.
  3. Inspect the outside and inside surfaces for sand, salt crystals, algae, or grit before placing the magnet. The supplied materials do not establish how the holder behaves on textured, bowed, heavily curved, or coated panels.
  4. Keep fingers clear while bringing the two magnetic parts together. Start with the lens and base supported, rather than allowing the magnet to snap across the panel.
  5. Test the mount at a low, easy-to-recover position before placing it over delicate coral or expensive equipment.

What each lens is for

77mm macro lens: reveal small subjects

The macro lens is the kit’s close-detail option. Orphek describes it for photographing and viewing textures and small features, including use while maintaining an aquarium. Use it when the subject is a polyp, skeletal edge, vermetid tube, tissue line, or other detail that gets lost in a wide tank shot.

Macro work magnifies every movement. Stabilize the camera or magnetic holder, focus on the exact plane you want sharp, and take several frames at slightly different focus distances. A macro filter does not replace a macro-capable lens, autofocus system, or adequate light; it changes the optical setup in front of the lens. The supplied information contains no minimum focusing-distance, magnification, sharpness, or distortion measurements, so evaluate those characteristics with your own camera and subject.

Orange 15000K lens: counter very blue lighting

Orphek describes the orange filter as a way to balance blue aquarium illumination and warm the recorded tones. It is aimed at the deep-blue appearance common under reef lighting, where a camera may render corals, rock, and sand with an exaggerated blue cast.

Use the orange lens when a test frame looks strongly cyan or blue and you want a warmer starting point. Compare a frame with the filter to one without it under the same exposure and lighting; do not assume that the filter alone makes colors accurate. White-balance settings, light intensity, water clarity, camera picture profile, and post-processing all affect the result.

Yellow 20000K lens: a further color adjustment

The yellow lens is described as complementing the orange filter and refining contrast and color. Orphek also says the yellow and orange lenses can be combined. Stacking can reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor and may require a slower shutter speed, a wider aperture, or higher ISO. Make one change at a time, record which filters are installed, and judge the result on a calibrated display if color decisions matter.

Camera setup: a repeatable workflow

  1. Clean the camera lens thread and the kit’s retaining ring with a blower or clean cloth. Never force a cross-threaded filter.
  2. Set the camera to a mode that lets you control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Reef lighting can be bright to the eye while still producing a difficult exposure through blue channels.
  3. Turn off pumps temporarily only if your livestock and equipment routine allows it; otherwise use a faster shutter speed to manage coral movement. The lens kit does not stabilize moving water or animals.
  4. Screw the selected filter onto the 77mm thread by hand until it is snug. Stop if resistance starts immediately; optical threads are easy to damage.
  5. Compose a test frame without changing the aquarium lights. Check the histogram and highlight warnings on pale coral or sand, then adjust exposure.
  6. Refocus after attaching a macro or stacked filter. Confirm detail at the intended subject distance rather than trusting the focus confirmation light alone.
  7. Capture a reference frame with the same composition and no filter, followed by the orange, yellow, or macro setup you want to evaluate. Label the files so later color comparisons remain meaningful.

If your lens uses a step-up ring, check the ring for internal reflections, uneven seating, and corner darkening before an important shoot. The manufacturer materials do not specify which third-party rings are compatible.

Magnetic aquarium setup

  1. Place the external base against the clean outside of the aquarium wall.
  2. Hold the internal magnet on the opposite side of the panel and bring it toward the base slowly. Keep the lens supported so the magnetic pull does not drag it across the surface.
  3. Position the lens over the area you want to inspect or photograph. The base remains outside the tank; the matching magnet is inside, as described by Orphek.
  4. Check that the wall is within the 15mm stated thickness limit and that the assembly is not resting on sand, rock, coral, cables, or an overflow edge.
  5. Move the holder in short increments while watching the subject through the camera or by eye. If the magnet slips, remove it and inspect both surfaces for debris before trying again.
  6. When finished, separate the magnets by sliding them apart rather than snapping them together across the panel. Store the parts in the supplied box.

Because the available product information does not report pull-force testing or scratch testing, treat every first use as a supervised trial. Do not leave the holder unattended over livestock or allow a loose magnet to enter a pump, overflow, or drain.

Color and exposure decisions under reef LEDs

Blue-heavy reef lighting can fool both eyes and camera meters. Start with a neutral reference rather than trying to correct an unknown problem after the shoot. Photograph a white or gray reference object only if it is aquarium-safe and cannot contaminate the water; otherwise use a fixed camera white-balance setting and keep it unchanged while comparing filters.

  • Use the macro lens when the priority is scale and texture.
  • Try the orange lens when blue dominance is the main visual problem.
  • Try the yellow lens when you want the additional adjustment Orphek describes, or test it together with orange as the manufacturer permits.
  • Expect stacked or colored filters to alter exposure. Recheck shutter speed for fish and coral movement before raising ISO.
  • Judge the result on the final device or platform where the image will be published. A filter cannot correct a display that is itself badly calibrated.

These are practical shooting choices, not measured claims that one lens is objectively more accurate. Orphek’s pages describe intended color effects, while the reviewed material provides no independent side-by-side chart, laboratory transmission data, or before-and-after test.

Cleaning, storage, and aquarium safety

Use the included cleaning cloth only after removing loose particles with a blower or very gentle air. Rubbing salt or sand across an optical coating can create permanent marks. Keep the lenses in the portable box, cap or cover them when possible, and avoid placing them face-down on a wet stand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before every magnetic session, wipe the contact areas and inspect for grit. Acrylic can scratch more readily than many glass panels, and the supplied information does not establish how the holder’s contact surfaces are finished. Never use household glass cleaner near open aquarium water unless the product is explicitly aquarium-safe and fully removed from the equipment.

Price, reviews, and what they do—and do not—tell you

When the Orphek shop listing was retrieved, it displayed a price of $48 USD and 26 customer reviews: 22 five-star, two four-star, one three-star, and one two-star review. Those figures are transient retailer-page data; price, stock, shipping, taxes, and review totals can change. Ratings indicate customer sentiment on that page, not independently measured optical performance, durability, or fit.

Orphek’s product material also references an Amazon destination, but availability and any referral arrangement were not established in the available information. Confirm the seller, current price, shipping terms, return policy, and exact contents at checkout.

When the kit makes sense

  • Choose it when you already own a lens with a 77mm filter thread or have confirmed a suitable step-up-ring plan.
  • Choose it when a removable magnetic viewing position is useful for your glass or acrylic aquarium within the stated thickness limit.
  • Choose it when macro detail and blue-light color adjustment are more useful than buying separate filters for unrelated photographic systems.
  • Pause before buying if your tank is thicker than 15mm, has a curved or textured wall, or cannot be safely exposed to a magnetic accessory.
  • Pause if you need guaranteed colorimetric accuracy, published optical measurements, or independently verified scratch and holding-force performance; those facts are not supplied.

Questions to settle before ordering

  1. What is the filter-thread diameter of the exact lens you will use?
  2. If it is not 77mm, has the specific step-up ring and lens combination been confirmed?
  3. Is the aquarium glass or acrylic, and is the wall 15mm or thinner at the mounting point?
  4. Will the magnet remain away from pumps, overflows, livestock, and loose substrate?
  5. Do you need macro detail, warmer blue-light balance, the yellow adjustment, or a combination?
  6. Have you checked the live listing for current price, stock, shipping, returns, and contents?

The Omini kit is therefore best viewed as a compact, manufacturer-specified filter and mounting system. Its practical value depends on the fit of your camera lens, the dimensions and condition of your aquarium wall, and whether its three intended optical effects match the images you want to make. The available sources establish the configuration and intended uses, but they do not establish personal-use results or independent performance claims.
