Orzo, a shy black cat rescued from a hoarding situation in upstate New York, needed more than a safe place to land. Animal League America says he was living with constant pain from feline stomatitis, a severe inflammatory disease affecting the mouth. Veterinary care addressed the pain, while patient behavioral support was planned to help him adjust to life with people.
What happened to Orzo?
Animal League America reports that Orzo arrived from a hoarding situation in upstate New York emotionally distressed and in constant pain. During a veterinary evaluation, the organization’s team diagnosed feline stomatitis.
Dr. Mark Verdino, Animal League America’s Chief of Veterinary Staff, described the disease as “an immune-mediated disease that causes severe inflammation and ulceration in the oral cavity.” He explained it this way: “The easiest way to explain it is that these cats are essentially having an allergic reaction to their own teeth.” These statements describe Orzo’s case as reported by the organization; they are not a general diagnostic guide.
Why did Orzo have all his teeth removed?
Animal League America says Orzo’s condition required a full-mouth extraction: surgery to remove all his teeth. The procedure took place in the organization’s Pet Health Centers’ Fried Dental Suite, which Animal League America describes as having advanced dental technology for this specialized care.

Dr. Verdino said, “The biggest concern is pain,” and that without surgery Orzo likely would have remained uncomfortable and dependent on medication. He added: “He’s still a young cat, and this procedure gives him the best chance at living a healthy life.” This is the veterinary team’s reasoning for Orzo’s treatment, not a recommendation that every cat with mouth inflammation should have the same procedure.
A lengthy, specialized procedure
Animal League America says the surgery can take more than two hours under anesthesia and that most shelters and rescue organizations are not equipped to provide this kind of specialized dental procedure. Dr. Verdino also said that outside a rescue setting, the cost “can reach thousands of dollars.” The organization did not give an exact price or a date-specific estimate, so that statement should not be read as a current quote.

Recovery also means feeling safe
Surgery addressed Orzo’s reported dental pain, but it did not complete his recovery. Animal League America says he was unsure around people after his experience in a hoarding situation. The organization’s feline behavior team was expected to help him decompress, build trust, adjust, and gain confidence, with patience, stability, and time.
The account does not provide a recovery timeline or say that Orzo had already completed this behavioral work. It presents his path forward as both medical care and ongoing support as he learns to feel secure.

What Orzo’s story does—and does not—show
Orzo’s case shows how rescue can involve more than removing an animal from an unsafe situation: for him, it meant specialized veterinary treatment and planned behavioral care. Animal League America’s June 16, 2026 account asks readers to support lifesaving surgery and compassionate care through donations. His individual outcome should not be treated as a universal treatment plan for other cats.
