Overweight Dogs and Cats: Pet Obesity Risks and What to Do Next

Excess weight in dogs and cats is linked to diabetes, joint disease, kidney problems, and some cancers. Learn how body condition is scored, what the 2022 clinic survey shows, and why cats need slow, supervised weight loss.

Excess weight in dogs and cats is a health concern, not just a cosmetic one. Obesity is associated with several serious conditions, including diabetes, joint disease, skin and breathing problems, kidney dysfunction, and some cancers. An extra few pounds does not guarantee that a pet will develop any of these problems, but the risk rises with the amount of excess fat. The safest first step is a body condition assessment by your veterinarian, followed by a weight-loss plan that is individualized and monitored over time.

How to tell whether your pet is overweight

Weight alone does not settle the question. A 70-pound Labrador and a 70-pound Labrador with a lot of muscle are in very different condition. Veterinarians use two scored assessments instead.

Body condition score (BCS)

The body condition score estimates how much fat covers the body. Your veterinarian feels the ribs, spine, and abdomen and places the pet on a scale. Overweight and obese ranges mean fat covering the ribs, spine, and waist is heavier than it should be. The score is the standard tool used in clinics, and it is the measure behind the 2022 prevalence figures discussed below.

Muscle condition score (MCS)

The muscle condition score checks lean mass over the spine, hips, and skull. It matters because a pet can have a healthy-looking weight while losing muscle, and muscle loss during dieting is a real concern. AAHA’s 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines recommend assessing both scores together, not relying on the scale.

Simple checks you can make at home

  • Place your hands along the rib cage. You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure, under a thin layer of fat.
  • Look at your pet from above. There should be a visible waist behind the ribs.
  • Look at your pet from the side. The abdomen should tuck up behind the chest rather than sag level with it.
  • Note any changes in how much your pet can move, climb stairs, or jump, and mention them to your veterinarian.

These checks are useful for noticing a trend between visits. They do not replace a scored veterinary exam, which is the basis for a target weight.

Health problems linked to excess weight

AAHA’s 2014 guideline states that excess weight can reduce longevity and adversely affect quality of life. It describes these associations:

  • Skin disorders and respiratory disorders
  • Renal dysfunction (kidney problems)
  • Metabolic and endocrine disorders, including diabetes
  • Orthopedic disease, such as joint and ligament strain
  • Some types of cancer

These are associations, not certainties. A pet with extra weight may never develop any of them, and a symptom such as limping or coughing should not be attributed to weight without a veterinary exam.

The guideline also explains that hormones and inflammatory cytokines released by excess fat tissue contribute to chronic inflammation. How much this inflammation contributes to individual disease is not completely understood, which is one reason veterinarians focus on the whole animal rather than a single number.

How common is pet overweight? Reading the 2022 numbers correctly

The figure most often quoted is from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) 2022 survey. Among dogs and cats assessed by veterinary professionals at participating U.S. clinics, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight or obese based on body condition score.

That sample has limits. APOP’s survey is clinic-based, so it is not a nationally representative estimate, and body condition categories do not measure whether excess fat is actually impairing a pet’s health. The figure describes how often pets seen in participating clinics fell into overweight or obese body condition ranges in 2022. It should not be read as the share of U.S. pets who are clinically obese.

Older articles sometimes cite an “up to 59%” estimate that appears in earlier AAHA material. Use the dated 2022 APOP survey and its scope rather than mixing figures from different survey years.

APOP’s founder, Ernie Ward, DVM, put the health message this way in the 2022 survey announcement:

How a safe weight-loss plan is built

AAHA describes weight management as an individualized process. Calorie numbers are starting estimates that your veterinarian adjusts for your pet’s intake, lifestyle, and progress. A typical sequence looks like this:

  1. Veterinary exam with BCS and MCS. Your veterinarian scores body and muscle condition and agrees on a realistic target weight, usually based on ideal body weight.
  2. Diet history. Your veterinarian asks what your pet eats, including treats, table food, and anything given by other household members.
  3. Energy plan. The veterinarian calculates a starting daily calorie amount using a clinical energy equation adjusted to the individual animal.
  4. Diet selection. The veterinarian chooses a food that fits the plan, including whether a therapeutic weight-loss diet is appropriate.
  5. Feeding and activity management. You measure every meal, count treats, and agree on a realistic activity plan with your veterinarian.
  6. Scheduled rechecks. Weight, BCS, and MCS are rechecked, and the calorie amount is adjusted if progress stalls or muscle is being lost.

Most owners can carry out steps 5 and 6 at home, but steps 1 through 4 should be directed by a veterinarian.

Diet choices and what they are for

AAHA’s 2021 guidance says therapeutic weight-loss diets fortified with nutrients are recommended for pets undergoing significant calorie restriction, because a smaller portion can otherwise leave gaps in nutrition. Several food features are discussed as considerations in that choice:

  • Higher protein can help spare lean mass during weight loss.
  • Protein and added fiber may promote satiety, meaning the pet feels fuller between meals.
  • Higher moisture may increase satiety in cats.

These are factors your veterinarian weighs. They are not a ranking of brands, and no single food works for every animal.

Feeding tools

Once your veterinarian has set a daily amount, a pet food measuring cup or a kitchen scale helps keep portions consistent from meal to meal. A measuring tool does not produce weight loss by itself. The result depends on the plan being followed and monitored.

Cats: avoid rapid weight loss

APOP’s 2026 guidance states that rapid weight loss is not the goal and may raise the risk of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) in cats. Do not start a crash diet, a sudden severe reduction in food, or a generic calorie target for a cat. Feline weight loss should be slow and supervised, with scheduled rechecks. If a cat eats very little for more than a day or two, contact your veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.

Dogs: the same principles apply

Dogs should also lose weight gradually under veterinary guidance. Exercise increases are often part of the plan, but they should be introduced slowly and agreed with your veterinarian, especially if a pet has joint disease, heart or breathing problems, or has been mostly inactive.

Next steps

If you are unsure whether your pet is overweight, ask your veterinary team to score body condition and muscle condition at the next visit. If the answer is yes, ask for a written plan that includes a target weight, a daily calorie amount, a diet recommendation, and a recheck schedule. Bring questions about treats, activity, and any changes you notice between visits.

The aim is a steady, measured change in body condition that protects muscle and fits your pet’s life. Owners who approach weight as a health issue, rather than a failure, are generally better placed to follow through.

Sources cited in this article include AAHA’s 2014 weight management guideline, the AAHA 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines, the APOP 2022 clinic survey, and APOP’s 2026 guidance on feline weight loss. Each reflects a veterinary or clinic-based perspective, and none replaces an individual exam.
