The dinosaur with the famous five-foot “snorkel” was Parasaurolophus, an extinct duck-billed hadrosaur. Its spectacular crest was not a proven underwater breathing tube. It was a hollow, backward-projecting extension of the nasal passages, and the best-supported interpretations in the available evidence center on sound production and visual display.
The “snorkel” nickname comes from an old idea that the animal might have used the crest to breathe while swimming or to store air. Fossils cannot show a living animal’s behavior directly, so that hypothesis remains historical speculation rather than an established function.

What dinosaur had a five-foot snorkel on its head?
Parasaurolophus is the answer to the familiar “dinosaur with a snorkel” question. It belonged to the hadrosaurs, the group commonly called duck-billed dinosaurs, and lived during the Late Cretaceous. The crest rose from the back of the skull and curved behind the head, creating the silhouette that makes the animal look as if it has a trumpet or snorkel attached to its nose.

The crest was an anatomical continuation of the nasal airway. In other words, it was a hollow bony structure containing passages connected with the animal’s breathing system. That connection explains why early observers imagined a respiratory use, but a nasal passage is not automatically an underwater breathing device. There is no direct fossil evidence that Parasaurolophus used the crest to breathe beneath the surface.

Why the “five-foot” description is approximate
A 2025 update from A-Z Animals gives an estimate of about 5 feet 3 inches for a head measured with its crest. That figure is an article estimate, not a universal measurement for every individual or every species in the genus. Crest length and curvature varied, and the dimensions of a reconstructed skull can depend on which specimen is being measured and how missing parts are restored.
The same profile gives approximate whole-animal dimensions of about 31 feet long, 9 feet tall and 5,600 pounds. Those numbers should be read as broad estimates rather than precision measurements. They describe the scale of the animal that carried the crest, not a claim that every Parasaurolophus reached exactly those dimensions.
What did the crest actually look like inside?
Externally, the crest was a long tube-like projection extending backward from the skull. Internally, it was divided into passages rather than being a solid horn. Those passages were continuous with the nasal airway, so air moving through the nose would have traveled through the crest’s convoluted channels before leaving the body.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis architecture matters because it gives researchers a physical basis for studying acoustics. A hollow tube can alter airflow and resonance, much as the shape of a wind instrument changes the sound produced by air moving through it. That comparison does not mean the dinosaur played a trumpet, and it does not reveal the exact call. It means the crest’s form could have affected the frequency and quality of sounds made by the animal.
A crest, not a detachable “snorkel”
The nickname can create the wrong mental picture. Parasaurolophus did not have a separate breathing tube held above the water. The crest was fused to the skull, enclosed in bone and connected to the nasal passages. An animal trying to breathe while submerged would still need a way to keep its actual air intake above the water, and the fossil anatomy does not demonstrate that the crest served that purpose.
The structure also was not an empty container proven to hold a reserve of compressed air. The passages were part of the airway, and the available evidence does not establish an air-storage system that would let the dinosaur remain underwater for a measured period.

Did Parasaurolophus use the crest to breathe underwater?
Probably not, and “probably” is important here. Early speculation treated the crest as a possible snorkel or air reservoir, but the account describing the idea also says the animal spent most of its life on land. The underwater-breathing interpretation is therefore a historical hypothesis, not the leading explanation presented by the accessible modern summaries.
Fossils can preserve the shape of the skull and the internal channels, but they cannot preserve a recording of breathing behavior. A crest connected to the nose proves an airway connection; it does not prove that the animal routinely submerged its body, grazed underwater or used the crest as a breathing tube.
What the fossil evidence can and cannot establish
- Established by anatomy: the crest was hollow and contained passages continuous with the nasal airway.
- Supported interpretation: the structure could have influenced sound production, and it may also have functioned as a visual ornament.
- Not demonstrated: underwater breathing, a known air-storage capacity, a specific call, a warning system or a confirmed method of identifying males and females.
Keeping those categories separate prevents a memorable nickname from turning into a claim the fossils do not support.
Was the crest used to make noise?
Sound production is the strongest functional interpretation described in the university account. NC State paleontologist Terry Gates is quoted as saying, “The tube crest was used for making noise.” The same statement is immediately qualified: evidence about the animal’s hearing supports the idea, but hearing sounds the crest might produce does not directly verify that the crest was used for that purpose.
The likely mechanism is resonance. Air passing through the connected nasal passages could have been shaped and modified by the crest’s length, bends and internal volume. Different crest geometries could therefore have produced different acoustic effects. That is a reason to take the sound hypothesis seriously, not proof of one particular call or social behavior.
Why hearing evidence helps but does not settle the question
If the skull and inner-ear anatomy indicate that Parasaurolophus could detect low or resonant sounds, that compatibility strengthens an acoustic interpretation. An animal that can hear a sound is a plausible candidate for using that sound in communication. However, compatibility is not the same as behavioral observation. The fossil record does not show whether calls were made by every individual, in which season, at what volume or in what social situation.

For that reason, it is safer to say the crest was plausibly a resonating sound-making structure than to label it a proven herd alarm, mating signal or individual “voice.” Those more specific claims go beyond the evidence summarized here.
Could the crest have been a visual display?
Yes. The NC State summary treats visual ornament as another plausible role. A large, highly visible crest could have affected how one animal appeared to another, whether by silhouette, movement or overall size. That possibility is consistent with the fact that crests differed across species and forms.
Visual display is a functional category, not a complete behavioral story. The available evidence does not establish whether the crest advertised age, species identity, reproductive condition, social rank or sex. Nor does it show that the crest changed color or was used in a particular courtship routine. Those details should remain open questions rather than being presented as settled facts.

How many Parasaurolophus species were there?
Parasaurolophus is a genus, not a single species. The 2021 NC State University News account, summarizing the study it discussed, says the evidence supported at least three North American species. The profile distinguishes shorter, more curved crests from long, tube-like forms.
That variation is significant for interpreting the five-foot image. A long, gently curving crest and a shorter, more sharply curved crest would not have had exactly the same external appearance or internal acoustics. A statement about “the” crest can therefore hide meaningful differences among species and individuals.
| Question | What the available evidence supports | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| What was it? | A hollow cranial crest connected to the nasal passages | Shown by skull anatomy; not a separate device |
| How large was the animal? | About 31 feet long, 9 feet tall and 5,600 pounds in one 2025 profile | Approximate secondary-source estimates, not universal measurements |
| How long was the head with its crest? | About 5 feet 3 inches in that profile | An estimate for the article, not every specimen or species |
| When did it live? | About 76.5–73 million years ago | Late Cretaceous dating given by the same 2025 profile |
| How many species are recognized in the summary? | At least three North American species | Reported in the 2021 NC State University News account |
| What was the crest for? | Sound production and possibly visual ornament | Functional interpretation; exact behavior remains uncertain |
Why did different species have different crest shapes?
The accessible account does not assign a separate, proven function to each crest shape. It does, however, describe a range from shorter, more curved crests to long, tube-like forms. Shape differences could have changed both appearance and the way air resonated inside the passages, which is why researchers compare skull geometry when considering sound.

It would be an overreach to convert that variation into a simple code such as “short crest equals female” or “long crest equals male.” The evidence summarized here supports species-level diversity, but it does not establish a sex-identification system or a single explanation for every difference.

The most recognizable feature is the crest, but the animal itself was a large hadrosaur. The approximate profile measurements—31 feet in length, 9 feet in height and 5,600 pounds—convey why the five-foot head estimate should be understood in proportion: the crest was dramatic, yet it was attached to a substantial terrestrial dinosaur rather than a small aquatic animal.
Calling it a duck-billed dinosaur identifies its broader group, not a modern duck-like lifestyle. The “snorkel” nickname is visual shorthand. It should not be used to classify Parasaurolophus as a marine reptile or imply that it lived like an animal with a permanent underwater breathing adaptation.
How scientists investigate a crest that no longer makes sound
Researchers work from several kinds of preserved evidence. The outer skull shows the crest’s overall shape; internal spaces reveal the route and complexity of the nasal passages; and features associated with hearing can indicate whether proposed sounds were biologically plausible. Combining those clues allows a testable reconstruction of what the crest might have done.
Such reconstructions are necessarily cautious. A model can estimate resonance or compare the internal geometry of species, but it cannot recover soft tissues that did not fossilize or observe a living animal’s social context. The result is a ranked set of interpretations rather than a complete behavioral recording.

- Start with the anatomy. Ask whether the claim matches the known hollow, nasal-connected structure.
- Separate possibility from proof. “Could have resonated” is different from “made a documented call.”
- Check the level of detail. A broad sound-making role is better supported than a named warning, mating or territorial signal.
- Account for species variation. Crest shape was not identical across the genus.
- Keep the nickname in perspective. “Snorkel” is memorable, but it describes an old analogy, not a demonstrated underwater adaptation.
What remains unknown?
The precise function of the crest cannot be directly observed in fossils. Scientists do not have a recording of a living Parasaurolophus, a preserved behavioral sequence or a direct test showing how the animal used the structure in water. As a result, several questions remain unresolved: the exact sound or range of sounds, how often calls were made, whether every species used the crest in the same way, and how much visual display contributed alongside acoustics.

Thermoregulation is sometimes mentioned as a possible role in general profiles, but the university account directly supports sound-making as Gates’s interpretation and visual ornament as a possibility. It does not establish cooling as the crest’s function. The cautious scientific position is therefore that the crest was a hollow nasal structure with a plausible acoustic role and a possible display role, while more specific claims remain unconfirmed.
What is a Parasaurolophus skull replica useful for?
A replica skull or 3D-printed crest can make the anatomy easier to understand because the internal passages are otherwise difficult to visualize from a flat illustration. A genus profile lists replica casts and 3D-printed skull or crest replicas among related educational products. Such an object is a display or teaching aid, not evidence that settles the crest’s function.
When examining a replica, look for the backward-projecting crest, the hollow internal route and its connection to the nasal region. Those features explain both why the animal earned its “trumpet for a nose” reputation and why the modern interpretation focuses on resonance rather than underwater breathing.

Bottom line: a trumpet-like crest, not a proven snorkel
Parasaurolophus had the famous five-foot-looking head because its skull carried a long, hollow crest connected to the nasal passages. The five-foot figure is an approximate head-and-crest estimate from a 2025 secondary profile, and crest dimensions varied across the genus. The old snorkel theory is not established: the animal is described as primarily terrestrial, and fossils do not demonstrate underwater breathing.
The most defensible interpretation is that the crest could have resonated sound and may also have served as a conspicuous visual ornament. That makes the nickname useful as an introduction, provided it is not mistaken for a literal description of how the dinosaur breathed.
