In a May 2025 retrospective, the organization reported providing emergency boarding to 563 animals during the month following the fire—a different measure and time window, not a replacement for the early intake update.
The response included emergency boarding, veterinary care for injured animals, temporary changes to shelter facilities, and coordination with animal-welfare partners. The reported animals included multiple species, not only dogs and cats.
What happened at Pasadena Humane
As evacuations began during the January 2025 fires, Pasadena Humane received animals from people leaving affected areas. In its January 8 update, the organization said it had taken in over 300 animals due to evacuations. It described treating animals with burns and other injuries in its intensive-care unit, including care such as pain medication, wound treatment, fluids, and oxygen as needed.
Pasadena Humane also said partner shelters in California were taking animals already in its care so it could focus on displaced animals. It offered emergency boarding to evacuees who could not stay somewhere that allowed pets. Pasadena Humane’s update noted that the Pasadena Civic Center was allowing people to stay with their animals.

How to understand the reported animal totals
The figures describe different measures and periods. Pasadena Humane’s January 8 update reported over 300 animals taken in due to evacuations as of 6:30 p.m. that day. Its May 2025 retrospective reported 563 animals given emergency boarding during the month following the Eaton Fire. Do not treat the figures as competing counts or add them together.
| Reported figure | What it measures | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Over 300 animals | Animals taken in due to evacuations, as of 6:30 p.m. January 8 | Pasadena Humane, January 8, 2025 update |
| 563 animals | Animals given emergency boarding during the month following the Eaton Fire | Pasadena Humane, May 2025 retrospective |
The later retrospective named dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles, birds, and koi fish among the animals boarded. Pasadena Humane also said more than 100 animals remained in its care when the retrospective was published; that was a May 2025 snapshot, not a current count. The reviewed sources do not provide a final audited count across agencies or a complete disposition for every animal.
Emergency veterinary care and temporary shelter
Pasadena Humane’s January 8 update said animals with burns and other injuries were being treated in its intensive-care unit, with pain medication, wound care, fluids, and oxygen as needed. Its May retrospective described adapting parts of the campus for emergency accommodation, including converting training rooms into dog housing and using clinic recovery kennels for cats.

These reports illustrate why animals affected by fire or evacuation conditions may need professional assessment. A pet evacuation carrier and basic go-bag supplies can help owners prepare, but they do not replace veterinary care or instructions from local authorities.
Coordination with animal-welfare partners
Pasadena Humane reported coordinating with Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, the ASPCA, American Humane, San Diego Humane Society, and North Valley Animal Disaster Group. The ASPCA separately confirmed that its disaster response team deployed at Pasadena Humane’s request.
Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) also reported its own regional response activity. Its January 16, 2025 release said DACC had facilitated adoptions for 296 unowned animals and transferred an additional 300 animals to rescue groups. Those are DACC figures, separate from Pasadena Humane’s counts; they should not be added to Pasadena Humane’s reported intake or boarding totals.
