A 2022 feature described the Nebraska Sandhills ranch as 121 years old—a count from that purchase to the story’s publication, not its age today. The account follows the Baskin–Jones family’s cattle operation and the work of sustaining grassland, water, and a multigenerational way of life.
How Diamond Bar Ranch began
Wallace Baskin was a North Platte butcher interested in live animals. In 1901, he and his wife acquired two homesteads that became the foundation of Diamond Bar Ranch. The ranch’s headquarters are in Logan County, near Stapleton, with land north and northwest of town; the South Loup River crosses the property, according to Successful Farming’s 2022 account.

The family’s history on the land reflects changing agricultural work. Earlier generations raised cattle and horses, along with sheep, hogs, and chickens before the 1950s, and the cattle breeds changed over time. After World War I, the family sold more distant acreage and gradually added grazing land closer to the Logan County headquarters. Most of the original headquarters buildings remained at the time of the feature, including barns and a two-story house reportedly built in 1882.

How the ranch raised and marketed cattle in 2022
When the feature was published, Robert and Susanne Jones operated the ranch with contributions from their children. The herd included Red Angus and Black Angus cows. Most calving took place in spring, though the account also mentions fall calves.

Grazing, forage, and water on Sandhills land
The Nebraska Sandhills are a grassland region underlain by the Ogallala Aquifer. Successful Farming put the region’s area at 19,300 square miles and reported that about 95%—12.75 million acres—was rangeland. These are figures from the 2022 feature, not independently verified measurements here.

Diamond Bar combined grazing with crop and hay production. The feature describes irrigated corn and alfalfa, wet meadow hay, and water drawn from the Ogallala Aquifer for irrigation and livestock. Robert Jones said the cattle could turn forage that people cannot eat into food: “We are able to produce good protein out of low-quality forage that’s not edible to humans. It’s incredible.”
Resting pasture and managing stocking
Rotational grazing was a central practice in the account: the family rested one-third of its pasture acres each year. Jones estimated that a sustainable stocking rate for the ranch was 16 acres per cow-calf pair. That is his estimate for this operation, not a general stocking recommendation for the Sandhills; appropriate stocking depends on the land and its conditions.
Rank #3
- Supports growth after calves have been weaned
- Designed to help condition and develop calves
- Balanced for rumen-available protein to support healthy gain
- Provides supplementation to support growth and development or help improve the body condition of cows any time of the year.
- High-energy textured feed is designed to get cattle eating when their appetite is reduced due to stress or weaning.
Working with wet meadows
The feature also describes using horses for some ranch work, including in wet meadows where machinery can disturb sandy soil. Jones recalled: “Heck, when I got draft horses it was like, OK, I’ll just drive into the wet meadow with a wagon.” The story presents this as one way the family worked in sensitive areas, alongside efforts to limit wind erosion and support wildlife habitat.
Conservation work reported by the family
Successful Farming reported that Diamond Bar had planted 31,000 trees and shrubs since 2000. The figure was given in connection with the ranch receiving the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts’ 2021 Tree Planter of the Year recognition. The feature also describes the family’s emphasis on wildlife habitat and careful land management; it does not provide independent environmental measurements for the ranch.

The ranch held Beef Quality Assurance certification at the time of the 2022 article. That certification should not be read as evidence that the beef was organic, grass-fed, or certified to any other standard; the feature does not make those claims.
A family operation across generations
Robert led ranch operations, while Susanne coordinated family logistics. Their children Shaylee, Grant, Lance, and Natalie contributed in different ways. Cattle work, haying, fencing, branding, horses, and daily land care formed part of the recurring rhythm of ranch life in the feature.
For Shaylee, that work carried a responsibility to those who came before: “It is a huge honor and responsibility to always be thinking of ancestors and how they did things on the ranch to get to where we are.” Natalie described stewardship as requiring “lots of perseverance, faith in God, and staying innovative.” Susanne’s concise description of ranch life was, “There is no perfect day.”
What the 2022 story does—and does not—establish
The feature documents one family’s account of beef production in the Nebraska Sandhills: its cattle, forage, grazing practices, water use, and reported conservation work. It is not a controlled comparison of ranching systems, and its stocking-rate estimate should not be generalized to other operations. The article said the family was preparing space for a direct-to-consumer beef business, but it does not establish whether that business later opened or what it offers now.
