Pea puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) are tiny freshwater fish that need a deliberately furnished, stable aquarium. Adults reach only about 1 inch (2.5–3 cm), but their size does not make them effortless community fish. Plan the aquarium around usable floor space, dense cover, the number of puffers you intend to keep, and a way to separate an aggressive individual. For the least risky setup, keep them in a species-only aquarium and feed a varied, animal-based diet.
What is a dwarf pea puffer?
The dwarf pea puffer is Carinotetraodon travancoricus, a fully freshwater species associated with southwestern India. Aquarium Co-Op describes it as a freshwater puffer from that region, and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) likewise identifies it as a freshwater fish native to India. In stores and hobby discussions, you may also see “pea puffer” or “dwarf puffer”; these names refer to the same species when the scientific name matches.

Several care references converge on a very small adult size. Aquarium Co-Op and Aqueon list adults at about 1 inch, Fishkeeping gives a maximum of 3 cm, and MPEDA gives 2.5 cm. In practical terms, expect an adult around 2.5–3 cm long, with individual variation. A small body still produces territorial pressure in a group, and a tiny fish can be difficult to catch if you need to remove it from a planted aquarium.
How big do pea puffers get?
Use approximately 1 inch (2.5–3 cm) as the planning size for an adult. That figure is useful when judging sight lines and cover, but it should not be used to justify the smallest possible container. A pea puffer spends its time moving through the whole furnished space, and several fish need room to avoid one another. The aquarium must also hold a stable volume of water and provide enough structure that one fish cannot constantly see and chase another.

What size tank does a pea puffer need?
There is no single published minimum accepted by every care source. The figures below are recommendations from different publishers, written for different stocking assumptions. Treat them as reference points rather than a universal formula.
| Publisher | Stated guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Aqueon, February 2020 | “3 gallons +” per dwarf pea puffer | A per-fish volume guideline; it does not by itself describe group behavior, footprint, or tank mates. |
| Fishkeeping, publication date not identified | 45 litres minimum | A minimum-volume recommendation for the species; the source does not establish a universal stocking formula. |
| Aquarium Co-Op, publication year not identified | Up to six or seven in a 20-gallon aquarium | Presented for a group with no other tank mates and plentiful plants or decorations. |
| Fluval, February 2022 | Increase aquarium size proportionally for a group | Supports scaling the aquarium with group size rather than treating a small tank as interchangeable for every setup. |
These recommendations cannot be collapsed into one “correct” number. A single puffer, a group, and a mixed-species aquarium impose different demands. A long tank with usable floor area and visual barriers can work better than a taller tank with the same nominal volume. Group stocking also requires spare capacity for an individual that must be isolated.
Choose volume by stocking plan
- One fish: Use a stable, fully furnished aquarium rather than a bare display container. Apply the per-fish guidance from Aqueon as a lower reference, not as a guarantee that every footprint will work.
- A group: Start with the social arrangement you can support long term. Aquarium Co-Op’s six-or-seven-in-20-gallons example assumes no other fish and abundant cover; it is not a general community-tank recommendation.
- A community aquarium: Do not simply add the volume for another species and assume compatibility. The puffer’s behavior, cover layout, and ability to remove a bully matter as much as the arithmetic.
How to furnish a pea puffer aquarium
Dense plants and other cover are recurring recommendations from Aquarium Co-Op and Fluval. Arrange the aquarium so the fish can disappear from one another’s view, investigate separate areas, and retreat without being trapped in a single open corridor.

Build visual barriers
Use clumps of live plants, robust artificial plants, wood, or smooth ornaments to divide the line of sight. Leave open lanes for observation and feeding, but avoid an entirely bare layout. Fluval’s guidance is explicit: “If keeping a group, increase tank size proportionally.” More fish should mean both more water and more usable structure.
Plan for maintenance access
Cover should not turn the aquarium into an inaccessible maze. Leave enough clearance to siphon debris, inspect every fish, and remove an aggressor with a net or container. Before adding fish, identify where a temporary isolation tank or divider could go. This is especially important in a group, where one persistent chaser may need to be separated even when the overall stocking level follows a published example.
Prioritize stability over decoration count
The tiny adult size can tempt owners to under-size equipment or water volume. Instead, choose a cycled aquarium that holds stable conditions, use filtration appropriate to the aquarium, and make routine maintenance possible without dismantling the entire planting. The goal is a predictable environment with enough furnished space, not the maximum number of ornaments.

Can pea puffers live with other fish?
The safest default for a general audience is a species-only aquarium. MPEDA reports that adults can nip fins and scales. That behavior makes a guaranteed “safe tank-mate list” misleading: a companion that appears fine in one aquarium may be harassed in another, and damage can accumulate before an owner notices.
Aquarium Co-Op’s group-stocking example specifically excludes other tank mates. Follow that conservative model if you are choosing a first setup or cannot maintain a second aquarium. A mixed tank should be considered an individual-risk experiment, not a standard requirement for the species.
If you attempt a mixed aquarium
- Confirm that the aquarium has more than the minimum space you would use for a species-only setup, with dense cover and broken sight lines.
- Introduce fish only when you can observe interactions closely and remove a target or aggressor immediately.
- Watch for torn fins, missing scales, hiding, refusal to eat, or one fish being repeatedly driven into a corner.
- Have a cycled backup aquarium or secure divider ready before adding the puffers. Do not wait for serious injury to make a separation plan.
Even with these precautions, no particular companion species can be presented as consistently safe on the available evidence. Individual temperament, aquascape, and group composition all change the outcome.

What do pea puffers eat?
Pea puffers are carnivorous. Their menu should therefore be built around animal-based foods, offered as a varied selection rather than a single permanent staple. Aquarium Co-Op identifies frozen bloodworms as a favorite and recommends a diverse assortment. Fishkeeping lists bloodworms as a staple, brine shrimp as an occasional food, and snails as a weekly offering. The latter schedule and snail recommendation belong to Fishkeeping’s care guidance; they are not a universal nutritional standard.
| Food option | What the cited guidance says | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen bloodworms | Aquarium Co-Op calls them a favorite; Fishkeeping lists bloodworms as a staple. | A commonly discussed food for variety. Offer portions the fish can consume and remove uneaten pieces. |
| Brine shrimp | Fishkeeping lists brine shrimp as an occasional food. | Use as one part of a rotating menu rather than the only food. |
| Snails | Fishkeeping recommends a weekly offering. | Treat this as that source’s schedule, not a validated requirement for every puffer or aquarium. |
| Other animal foods | Both sources support variety but do not provide a complete universal menu. | Offer additional suitable animal foods only when the individual accepts them and the food can be managed cleanly. |
Live versus frozen foods
Live foods can trigger hunting behavior, while frozen foods are convenient to portion and store. Neither format is automatically superior for every fish. The useful test is whether the puffer recognizes and eats the food, maintains condition, and receives more than one type over time. Thaw frozen foods appropriately, feed small portions, and remove leftovers so they do not degrade water quality.
Observe the individual fish
The available care references do not establish one complete nutritional plan or a precise feeding frequency that applies to every aquarium. Adjust portions to the fish’s response, the number of puffers, and how quickly food disappears. Keep notes when introducing a new food; a varied list is only useful if the fish actually consumes it.

Setting up and introducing pea puffers
- Select the aquarium footprint. Match the volume and floor area to a single fish or group, using the published recommendations as attributed reference points rather than a universal minimum.
- Cycle and furnish the tank. Establish stable water conditions before purchase, then add dense plants and visual barriers while preserving maintenance access.
- Prepare isolation equipment. Have a spare cycled container, divider, or second aquarium ready for an aggressor or injured fish.
- Acclimate carefully. Transfer the fish using a method appropriate to your water-chemistry difference and avoid prolonged exposure to shipping water.
- Feed an animal-based variety. Begin with foods the fish accepts, such as bloodworms, and introduce other options without allowing uneaten food to accumulate.
- Monitor behavior every day. Look for repeated chasing, fin or scale damage, loss of appetite, or a fish that cannot reach cover. Act on those signs promptly.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“They are tiny, so a tiny tank is enough.”
Small adult size does not remove the need for stable water, furnishing, and escape routes. Reassess the aquarium’s footprint, cover, and maintenance routine instead of measuring only the fish’s length.
“A published per-fish number settles the question.”
Aqueon’s 3-gallon-plus figure, Fishkeeping’s 45-litre minimum, and Aquarium Co-Op’s six-or-seven-in-20-gallons example describe different contexts. Choose the recommendation that matches your stocking plan, then leave room for isolation and additional cover.
“Pea puffers are automatically community-safe.”
Adult fin and scale nipping is documented by MPEDA. If you cannot observe the tank and separate fish quickly, use a species-only setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“One favorite food is a complete diet.”
Bloodworms may be readily accepted, but both Aquarium Co-Op and Fishkeeping emphasize variety. Rotate suitable animal foods and verify that each fish eats, rather than assuming a food offered is a food consumed.
Bottom line for prospective keepers
A pea puffer is a 2.5–3 cm freshwater fish with space, furnishing, and behavior needs that are easy to underestimate. Build the aquarium around the intended number of fish, dense visual cover, stable water, and a separation plan. Because adults may nip fins and scales, species-only housing is the dependable starting point. Feed a varied carnivorous diet, using bloodworms, brine shrimp, or other accepted animal foods according to the cited guidance and your fish’s response.
