If your cat may have been exposed to permethrin, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic now—even if your cat seems normal. Keep the product package or take a photo of its label so the veterinary team can identify the ingredients. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.
Is permethrin toxic to cats?
Yes. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide found in some flea and tick products labeled for dogs. A dog-labeled product can seriously poison a cat; never apply it to a cat. Product formulation, concentration and other ingredients can affect the risk, so share the exact product information with a veterinarian.

Pyrethroids disrupt ion transport in nerve membranes, which can lead to abnormal nervous-system activity and muscle effects. Merck Veterinary Manual explains this mechanism in its guidance on plant-derived insecticide toxicosis in animals.

Direct application of dog flea medicine
A prominent preventable route is mistakenly applying a canine permethrin spot-on product directly to a cat. Check the species label before using any flea or tick treatment.

Contact with a recently treated dog
A cat may also be exposed by grooming a dog that has recently received a permethrin product, or by sharing close resting space with that dog before the product is dry. VCA describes these exposure routes in its guide to pyrethrin/pyrethroid poisoning in cats.
What are the signs of permethrin poisoning in cats?
Warning signs can include:
- Twitching, muscle fasciculations or tremors
- Heightened sensitivity to touch or sound
- Uncoordinated movement
- Drooling
- Fever
- Seizures
- Breathing difficulty or other severe complications
Signs often appear within hours, but onset can be delayed. A cat that looks well after a known exposure still needs prompt veterinary advice.

In a 2010 retrospective referral-hospital study of 42 cats published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 86% had tremors or muscle fasciculations and 33% had seizures. The same study recorded complications in 33% of cats, including hypothermia, electrolyte abnormalities, aspiration pneumonia and respiratory complications. A separate 2007 Veterinary Poisons Information Service series reported increased muscular activity in 87.8% of 286 inappropriate feline spot-on exposures; death occurred in 10.5% of that reported group. These are figures from selected retrospective case groups, not estimates of an individual cat’s chance of a particular outcome.

- Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately. Do this even if your cat has no symptoms. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises owners to contact a veterinarian promptly for suspected poisoning in its common cat hazards guidance.
- Share what you know. Give the product name, active ingredients, approximate exposure time and route—such as direct application, grooming or contact with a treated dog—if known.
- Bring the package or a label photo. Product identity and ingredients matter to veterinary decisions.
- Do not induce vomiting or attempt oral decontamination unless a veterinarian specifically directs you. Cornell’s instruction is explicit: “DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are specifically directed to do so.”
- Follow veterinary instructions about coat contamination. Skin decontamination may be part of treatment, but do not delay the call to attempt a home procedure. Handling a tremoring, seizing or unstable cat can be risky.
How is permethrin toxicity in cats treated?
Veterinarians commonly make a presumptive diagnosis from a plausible exposure history and characteristic neurologic signs. Treatment aims to limit further absorption, control tremors or seizures, and provide supportive care. Depending on the cat’s condition, that can include monitoring and support for breathing or body temperature.

Veterinary sources describe washing contaminated skin and supportive management; the 2010 case series also reports decontamination and medication to control neurologic signs. There is no specific antidote for pyrethrin or pyrethroid poisoning, according to VCA. Medication choice, sedation, bathing and monitoring are clinical decisions, not owner-administered treatment instructions.
A 2014 report described intravenous lipid emulsion as an adjunct in one cat alongside decontamination, methocarbamol and supportive care. That single case report does not establish it as first-line treatment.
