If your cat is hissing, hiding, swatting, or trying to bite, stop approaching and give it space. These behaviors can be signs of fear, pain, or overstimulation—not proof that your cat is being “bad.” Reduce the trigger if you can do so safely, provide a quiet way to retreat, and avoid forcing contact. If the behavior is sudden, severe, recurring, or persistent, contact a veterinarian.

How do I calm an out-of-control cat right now?

Think safety first. A frightened cat may defend itself when it cannot escape, so do not corner, grab, punish, or try to cuddle it. Keep children and other animals at a safe distance. If the cat is actively attacking or you cannot approach safely, leave it alone and seek veterinary guidance rather than trying to restrain it.

1. Pause and make space

Stop reaching toward or touching a cat that is crouched, hissing, fleeing, or showing other signs of distress. Avoid staring and let the cat decide whether to approach. International Cat Care recommends minimal restraint and warns against scruffing or pinning; see its guide to creating a Cat Friendly Clinic.

2. Reduce the trigger

If you can do it without getting close to the cat, lower the noise, ask a visitor to move away, separate the cat from another animal, or block its view of an outdoor cat. Try to prevent repeated, uncontrolled exposure while the cat is highly aroused. VCA’s guidance on feline fears and phobias recommends identifying triggers and avoiding exposure as much as possible during behavior work.

3. Offer a quiet retreat

Make a calm room or hideaway available, with water and a litter box if the cat will be there for a while. Let it choose whether to use the space; do not drag it out of a hiding place. A covered bed, open carrier, or quiet room can serve as a retreat, not as a punishment.

4. Separate cats after an incident

If a cat has redirected aggression toward another pet, keep them apart until both are calm. Do not force an early reunion or allow them to confront each other through a narrow doorway. VCA advises avoiding an aroused cat until it settles and separating household cats when needed; see its guidance on redirected aggression.

5. Let the cat settle on its own timetable

Do not reach into a hiding place to pet, soothe, or offer food before the cat is ready. Watch for a voluntary change—such as choosing to approach or engaging with a familiar activity—before inviting interaction. If the cat becomes tense again, give it more space.

Why is my cat suddenly acting crazy?

6. Consider pain or illness

A sudden or marked behavior change can have a medical cause, including pain. Arrange a veterinary examination if a new reaction is severe, recurring, or persistent, especially in an adult or senior cat. VCA notes that a physical examination is appropriate when fear appears suddenly in an adult cat; behavior alone cannot establish the cause.

Seek veterinary advice promptly if the behavior is accompanied by other concerning changes in your cat’s health or daily routine. Do not try to diagnose the problem as aggression or treat it with an unsupervised sedative, supplement, or “natural” calming product. A veterinarian can assess the cat and discuss whether medication or behavior support is appropriate.

How can I prevent the reaction from happening again?

7. Build a gradual behavior plan

Once the immediate episode has passed, note what happened just before the reaction: the sound, person, animal, location, or handling that may have triggered it. Reduce exposure where possible, then work at an intensity the cat can tolerate. Pair brief, low-intensity exposure with something rewarding, such as a preferred treat, and stop while the cat remains calm. If fear signs return, pause or make the exposure easier rather than pushing through.

For complex or recurring reactions, ask your veterinarian about behavior guidance. VCA’s fear and phobia guidance describes gradual behavior modification and notes that veterinary assessment may be needed.

8. Improve the home environment

Enrichment supports longer-term wellbeing; it is not an instant way to stop an episode. Consider offering:

Do not use a wand toy or treat to lure a highly frightened cat closer than it wants to be.

9. Consider calming products cautiously

A feline pheromone diffuser or spray may be worth discussing with your veterinarian as an adjunct; effects are not guaranteed, and these products do not replace medical care or a behavior plan. VCA describes pheromone product formats and use. Follow the label, and if using a spray, apply it only to appropriate surfaces—not to the cat.

Evidence for many over-the-counter calming products is limited, so ask your veterinarian before using supplements or medication. VCA’s guidance on reducing cats’ veterinary-visit stress discusses these limits and veterinary advice. Never give a calming product or medication without checking that it is appropriate for your cat.

What should I do when my cat is hissing and hiding?

Let the cat remain hidden, reduce nearby noise and activity, and keep people and other animals away. Do not reach into its hiding place or block its exit. If the behavior is new, intense, or does not resolve, arrange veterinary advice; hiding and hissing can reflect fear, but a medical problem may also be involved.
