Perth Zoo’s gibbon habitat project was announced in May 2024 as part of an $11.7 million package that also included upgrades to the Parkland Heart visitor precinct. The Zoo said the new overhead routes would give gibbons three times their previous habitat space. The separate $51 million figure refers to the Cook Government’s wider investment in the Zoo Master Plan—not the cost of this project.
What Perth Zoo announced
On 20 May 2024, Perth Zoo said construction had begun on a new gibbon habitat then called Primate Crossing. The plan paired overhead rope routes for gibbons with improvements to Parkland Heart, the visitor precinct. The Zoo said the ropes would let gibbons travel above people entering the Zoo and that the new arrangement would triple their habitat space. Perth Zoo’s announcement also forecast completion by early 2025; that was the schedule stated at the time, not a current deadline.
The Zoo’s current attraction page uses the name Gibbon Crossing and describes it as a new habitat and visitor experience.
How the project funding figures differ
| Figure | What it refers to | Attribution |
|---|---|---|
| $11.7 million | Primate Crossing and Parkland Heart project | Perth Zoo, 2024 announcement |
| $51 million | Investment in the broader Perth Zoo Master Plan | Cook Government investment, as stated by Perth Zoo in 2024 |
These figures describe different scopes: the $11.7 million project sits within the wider Zoo Master Plan investment. They should not be treated as competing estimates for the gibbon habitat alone.

What visitors and gibbons were meant to experience
Overhead movement and viewing
The Zoo said the habitat would use vertical space and overhead ropes to give gibbons more travel distance and choice, while allowing visitors to watch them pass above the entry route. Its current page identifies three White-cheeked Gibbons in the experience and says this layout gives them more opportunity to move through the space.
Parkland Heart improvements
The accompanying precinct works announced by the Zoo included a new arbour, a free barbecue area, extra seating, event areas, an ablution block and an accessible Changing Places facility. A local Aboriginal artist was engaged to create arbour artwork depicting the six Noongar seasons.

Tower and visitor-safety comments
PerthNow reported a 14-metre tower connecting the rope routes and quoted Environment Minister Reece Whitby on visitors walking beneath the animals. The report attributed to Whitby the statement that marked areas might indicate where visitors should avoid standing, and that human-monkey interaction was not anticipated. He also said, “It’s not without some minor risk, but this is all part of the rich experience of engaging in and with wildlife.” These are the minister’s comments as reported by PerthNow, not an independent engineering safety assessment or a guarantee of risk-free viewing.
What the Zoo says about conservation
Perth Zoo says it is the global species coordinator for gibbons in zoo care. It also says it supports Fauna & Flora’s field work in Vietnam to protect wild gibbons from poaching and illegal wildlife trade. These are the Zoo’s descriptions of its conservation role and support.

Why the project was presented as a Zoo upgrade
The 2024 announcement placed the habitat and Parkland Heart works within a broader effort to improve the Zoo experience alongside conservation aims. Premier Roger Cook said the precinct showed how conservation outcomes could align with tourism opportunities. The Zoo also reported record October monthly attendance of 100,000 visitors, but its announcement excerpt did not specify the year for that October, so the figure cannot be tied to a particular year from that account.
