A 46-year-old wing foiler was bitten by a shark near South Rocks, about 2.5 kilometres east of Wedge Island, on 24 December 2023. The shark’s species was not identified. News reports said the man suffered multiple puncture wounds and needed more than 40 stitches.
Where and when did the shark bite happen?
The incident occurred at about 3 pm on Sunday, 24 December 2023, near South Rocks, approximately 2.5 kilometres east of Wedge Island, north of Lancelin. The location and activity were clarified in a 6:45 pm update to the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s SharkSmart alert.
Was he windsurfing or wing foiling?
The alert’s initial summary described the man as a “wind surfer,” but its update said he was foil boarding. ABC News later described him as a wing foiler. “Wing foiler” is the clearest description in the later reporting; the difference reflects how the incident was described over time, not evidence of a second event.
What happened, and how badly was he hurt?
In an interview reported by ABC News on 26 December, Troy Brown, 46, said he fell while attempting a jibe after catching a wave. He initially thought he had struck the foil, then realized the pain was on both sides of his ankle.

ABC reported 17 puncture wounds on the inside of his calf and ankle and seven on the outside, requiring more than 40 stitches. According to Brown’s account in that report, he sailed about 2.5 kilometres back through the channel, then walked roughly 500 metres to seek help. PerthNow reported on 24 December that he was transferred to Joondalup Hospital and was in stable condition that day; that report does not establish his later recovery.
What kind of shark was it?
The species was unknown in the official alert and news reports. Brown suspected it may have been a bronze whaler, but ABC reported that he did not see the shark. That suspicion is not a confirmed identification.

What should beachgoers do now?
The alert issued on the day advised extra caution in the Wedge Island area, following local beach closures, checking SharkSmart or Surf Life Saving WA updates, and reporting sightings to Water Police. Those were instructions for the 2023 incident, not a notice of current conditions. Check current WA SharkSmart information and local signage before entering the water.
