Perth Zoo’s white-cheeked gibbon Jermei gave birth by caesarean in June 2025, but her newborn died shortly after delivery. PerthNow reported that the infant had a faint heartbeat when delivered. The zoo’s immediate focus, as reported at the time, was Jermei’s recovery and support for her family group.
What happened to Jermei’s newborn?
PerthNow reported on 30 June 2025 that Jermei went into labour over the weekend and gynaecological experts performed a caesarean. The report said the newborn had a faint heartbeat at delivery and died shortly afterward. The zoo’s original message to members was not located as a public release, so details of the procedure and the infant’s condition here are attributed to PerthNow’s account of that message and keeper statements.

How was Jermei doing after the birth?
PerthNow’s June report said the zoo’s priority was Jermei’s recovery and supporting the family group. The article quoted a message to members describing the difficult experience for the team: “Working with animals means we get to experience very rewarding highs, but also difficult lows – often all at once. Our teams gave absolutely everything they could across a number of sleepless nights, and we’re so proud of them.”

Gradual return to her family
In a 23 July 2025 follow-up, PerthNow reported that Jermei was back outside with her daughter Lulani and mate Kayak after three weeks. She had been separated during early recovery to protect her surgical stitches; staff then reintroduced her gradually under supervision. Primate keeper Nene Haggar said grooming could disrupt the stitches and that separation was difficult for Jermei.
Haggar also described the challenge of keeping an active gibbon quiet after surgery: “When you’ve had a C-section, they do ask for you to be very inactive and just to sit and rest — that’s quite difficult with gibbons. Naturally, they’re just curious, and they want to play and they want to move around.”

Was this Jermei’s last pregnancy?
PerthNow’s July follow-up quoted Haggar saying 2025 was likely Jermei’s last year in the breeding program. Haggar described the decision as a response to complications and challenges, saying the team wanted Jermei to live her life and relax. This was a keeper’s reported assessment at the time, not a separately reported formal policy announcement.
