At pickup, collect medical records and a written list of completed and pending care. During the first week, establish the pet with a nearby veterinarian, keep routines calm, and budget from your shelter’s actual fee plus local veterinary quotes—not from a universal national total.
Before pickup: make the home safe and predictable
An adopted animal may arrive frightened, tired, or overstimulated. A dedicated retreat lets it observe the household without being pushed into contact. Choose a low-traffic area where the pet can sleep, eat, drink, and retreat undisturbed. Keep the first accessible rooms small enough to supervise; expand access as the animal settles.

Pet-proof the first rooms
- Secure electrical cords and remove small, chewable, or swallowable objects.
- Check that windows and exterior doors latch securely. Use gates to limit access to stairs or rooms that are not ready.
- Move household plants out of reach until you have confirmed they are safe for pets; some common plants are poisonous.
- Put medicines, cleaning products, food, rubbish, and children’s toys behind closed doors.
- Inspect fencing, balconies, and door-opening routines if the animal could escape.
Core supplies for any dog or cat
- Separate food and water bowls that are stable and easy to clean.
- The same food the shelter has been feeding, or enough of it to change diets gradually after a veterinary discussion.
- A comfortable, washable resting place in the safe area.
- Species-appropriate toys that can be supervised for wear or loose parts.
- Cleaning supplies suitable for pet accidents.
Additional dog supplies
Plan for a properly fitted collar or harness, an identification tag, a lead, and a secure transport arrangement. A crate can provide a den-like rest area and make travel safer, but it should never be used as punishment. Ask whether the dog has already been crate-trained and what equipment the shelter will send home.
Additional cat supplies
Set up a litter box before arrival, preferably in a quiet location that is easy to reach but away from food and water. A scratching post or pad gives the cat an approved outlet for scratching. Prepare a secure carrier for the journey and future veterinary visits; do not carry an unfamiliar cat loose in a vehicle.

Find out exactly what the adoption fee covers
There is no standard adoption package. Before paying, ask the shelter or rescue for an itemized explanation of what has been completed, what remains due, and what is supplied. Packages may include some combination of surgery, vaccines, a microchip, parasite treatment, medical records, food, or equipment, but those inclusions vary by organization and by animal.
| Question to ask | Why it changes your first-week plan |
|---|---|
| What services were completed, and on what dates? | You need dates and products for your veterinarian to decide when follow-up care is appropriate. |
| What services are still due? | Unfinished surgery, vaccines, testing, or parasite treatment may create an immediate bill. |
| Which food and supplies go home with the animal? | You can avoid buying duplicates and prevent an abrupt diet change. |
| Is follow-up care included or discounted? | The answer affects which clinic you contact and how much cash you reserve. |
| What behavior, medical, or medication notes should I know? | These details help you prepare the home and give the veterinarian a complete history. |
At pickup: leave with records, not just the pet
Request the animal’s medical records and a written explanation of pending care. Confirm the identification number for any microchip and ask how ownership or contact details are transferred. If the animal received medication, obtain the name, dose, schedule, duration, and storage instructions. Ask what signs should prompt an urgent call and which clinic handles after-hours emergencies.
Also ask what the animal has been eating, how often it is fed, its recent stool or litter habits, and any known triggers. Take a photo or keep a digital copy of every document so it is available during a veterinary visit.

First-week veterinary care: a practical sequence
ASPCA adoption guidance advises establishing the pet with a nearby veterinarian shortly after adoption. The veterinarian should use the animal’s records, age, history, health, lifestyle, and your location to set an individual plan.
- Book the appointment before or immediately after pickup. Tell the clinic that the animal is newly adopted and provide the shelter’s records when scheduling.
- Bring all paperwork and medication. Include vaccine certificates, surgery notes, laboratory results, microchip details, and discharge instructions.
- Ask for a complete wellness assessment. The veterinarian can identify problems that were not apparent in a shelter setting and establish a weight, dental, and nutrition baseline.
- Review vaccines. Do not assume a generic schedule applies. Vaccine choices and timing depend on age, prior doses, health, exposure risk, and local requirements.
- Make a parasite-prevention plan. Discuss intestinal parasites, fleas, ticks, and heartworm risk where relevant. Shelter protocols may differ by age and organization, so confirm what was tested or administered rather than repeating a treatment blindly.
- Confirm spay or neuter status and any remaining care. If surgery is pending, ask about timing, recovery, identification, and low- or no-cost local resources.
- Update identification. Have the microchip registered to you, keep the contact information current, and fit a collar and tag where appropriate. Check local licensing and identification rules; requirements differ by location.
- Ask about preventive costs and emergencies. Request prices for routine exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, testing, and common follow-ups, then identify the clinic’s urgent-care procedure.
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ guidance describes age-sensitive vaccination and shelter policies for issues such as heartworm testing and prevention. Those are shelter-care frameworks, not a prescription for an individual animal; your veterinarian should reconcile them with the records and the pet’s current condition.
Help the animal adjust during the first seven days
ASPCA’s 3-3-3 guidance describes the first three days as potentially overwhelming, with adjustment continuing over subsequent weeks and months. Keep the household calm and predictable. Offer food, water, toileting opportunities, and rest on a consistent schedule. Let the animal approach rather than forcing petting, play, introductions, or handling.

No current nationwide first-week total is established. Adoption fees, included services, regional veterinary prices, housing requirements, and the animal’s medical needs differ too widely. Build the budget from three sources: the shelter’s itemized fee, current quotes from nearby veterinary practices, and the supplies you still need to buy.
Historical ASPCA figures: useful categories, not a current forecast
ASPCA’s cost table is explicitly marked “2021 UPDATE.” It reports these historical estimates:

| Measure | Dog | Cat | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual total | $1,391 | $1,149 | ASPCA estimate, 2021; not a current local quote |
| Initial/one-time total | $1,030 | $455 | ASPCA estimate, 2021; not every adopter incurs every line item |
| First-year total | $3,221 | $1,904 | ASPCA estimate, 2021; combines that table’s assumptions |
The table’s categories include food, routine medical care, preventive medication, insurance, spay/neuter, initial medical costs, identification, litter equipment, a carrier, a crate, and training. Inflation, region, animal size, health, and the shelter’s package can make a present-day result materially different. Use the figures to see which categories exist, not to promise that your first week will cost a particular amount.
Build a location-specific worksheet
| Budget component | How to obtain the amount |
|---|---|
| Adoption fee | Ask the shelter for the total and an itemized list of included care. |
| Immediate supplies | Subtract anything supplied by the shelter, then price bowls, food, bedding, litter equipment, transport gear, identification, and cleaning products. |
| First veterinary visit | Ask nearby clinics for the exam fee and likely charges based on the records, not a generic package. |
| Vaccines, tests, and parasite prevention | Obtain current prices and ask which items are actually due for this animal. |
| Pending surgery or treatment | Confirm the shelter’s schedule, subsidies, or referral options before assuming you must pay the full private-clinic price. |
| Contingency reserve | Set aside money for an unexpected examination, medication, replacement supply, or urgent visit; the amount is a personal risk decision rather than a published national figure. |
Ask whether payment is due at adoption, at the first veterinary visit, or later. Low- or no-cost spay/neuter resources may be available locally, and the AVMA pet-care resource hub includes financial-assistance information to discuss with a veterinarian or shelter.
