Before booking a canine chiropractic appointment, ask your dog’s primary-care veterinarian to investigate the symptoms and discuss whether manual therapy belongs in the plan. Then verify that any practitioner has a current professional license, documented animal-specific postgraduate training, and a clear process for examination, referral, communication, and follow-up.
Chiropractic should be considered an adjunct—not a substitute for diagnosing spinal disease, injury, neurological problems, or other causes of pain. The evidence remains uncertain: the 2015 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines Task Force reported that it had not found sufficient, reliable, non-contradictory evidence to support chiropractic for veterinary pain management.

Why a veterinary conversation comes first
Back stiffness, a changed gait, reluctance to jump, or difficulty rising can result from many conditions. Joint disease, muscle injury, spinal cord compression, disc disease, fracture, infection, cancer, and neurological disorders may look similar to an owner. A manual adjustment cannot identify which of these is present.
Your veterinarian can perform an examination, decide whether diagnostic testing is appropriate, and explain whether chiropractic could be considered alongside treatment or whether another evaluation should happen first. Ask the veterinarian to document the signs that matter: when they began, what makes them better or worse, whether they are progressing, and whether your dog has shown weakness, loss of coordination, or changes in bladder or bowel control.

Veterinary involvement is also a legal and professional issue. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidance for the United Kingdom, updated in February 2025, states that animals treated by musculoskeletal therapists must be registered with a veterinary surgeon. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) position on integrative veterinary medicine calls for veterinary supervision within a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal rule. Ask what referral, supervision, and scope-of-practice requirements apply where your dog lives.
Questions for your primary-care veterinarian
What could be causing these signs?
Ask for a differential diagnosis in plain language rather than accepting “misalignment” as a diagnosis. Find out what the veterinarian can establish from the physical and neurological examination and what remains uncertain. If imaging, blood work, or another test is recommended, ask what question it is intended to answer and how the result would change treatment.
Is manual therapy appropriate now?
Ask whether chiropractic is reasonable with the current plan, whether another treatment should come first, and whether there are reasons to avoid manipulation. A dog with an unstable injury, suspected fracture, severe neurological deficit, or another condition requiring urgent care may need a different priority. Your veterinarian should be able to explain what findings would make the proposed service inappropriate or require referral.

What outcome should we measure?
Agree on observable goals such as getting up more easily, walking a measured distance, returning to a particular activity, or showing less discomfort during a defined movement. Ask when you will reassess and what result would prompt stopping, changing, or escalating care. Vague promises of “balance” or “wellness” are not a substitute for a measurable plan.
How will records be shared?
Ask your veterinarian to send relevant records, test results, medication details, and restrictions to the practitioner. Confirm how the practitioner will report examination findings, treatment delivered, and any change in symptoms. Coordinated records reduce the risk that two providers make conflicting recommendations or miss a worsening problem.

How to verify a practitioner
Confirm the underlying license
Ask whether the person is a currently licensed veterinarian or chiropractor and which licensing body regulates that license. Verify the status directly through the applicable regulator rather than relying only on a business website or social-media profile. A general professional license does not by itself demonstrate training in animal assessment or manual therapy.
Look for animal-specific postgraduate education
Ask exactly what animal-focused coursework, supervised training, and examinations the practitioner completed. The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) and American Veterinary Chiropractic Certification (AVCA/ACCC) pathway describes approved postgraduate coursework, written and practical examinations, and an active veterinary or chiropractic license. Its website states that certification is renewed every three years. This is one voluntary credential pathway; jurisdictions may recognize different credentials or impose different scope rules.

Questions about the first appointment
What happens before any adjustment?
Ask for a detailed description of the intake. AVCA material describes review of the dog’s history, health status, and previous tests; neurological examination; stance and gait analysis; and palpation. The practitioner should explain what they observe and how those findings relate to the proposed care.
Ask whether you may provide the veterinary records in advance, whether the practitioner will contact your veterinarian with questions, and whether you will receive a written summary. An appointment that begins with an adjustment before a history and examination deserves careful scrutiny.

What findings would make you defer treatment?
Ask for specific examples of findings that would lead to postponement, a different technique, additional testing, or referral back to the veterinarian. A responsible practitioner should be comfortable saying that an adjustment is not appropriate when the cause of a problem is unclear or the dog’s condition could make manipulation unsafe.
What exactly is being proposed?
Ask the practitioner to describe the technique in understandable terms, which body areas may be contacted, how your dog’s response will be monitored, and what alternatives exist. The American Kennel Club’s consumer overview notes that chiropractic care does not require specialized equipment, so equipment or a dramatic treatment setting is not evidence of quality.
Will my dog be allowed to stop?
Ask how fear, pain, or resistance will be handled. You should be able to pause the session, and the practitioner should explain how consent and stress signals are assessed. Forcing a frightened or painful dog through a procedure can create welfare problems even if the proposed technique is otherwise appropriate.
Questions about benefits, evidence, and uncertainty
What benefit is realistic for this diagnosis?
Ask the practitioner to connect the proposed goal to your dog’s established or suspected condition. “It helps everything” is not a clinically useful explanation. Ask what improvement would be expected, over what period, and what would count as no meaningful response.
What does the evidence show?
The 2015 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats contain this statement from the Pain Management Guidelines Task Force: “The Guidelines Task Force has not found sufficient, reliable, non-contradictory evidence for the use of chiropractic care for pain management in veterinary medicine at this time.” That is a published guideline assessment from 2015, not a quantified prediction for an individual dog and not a claim that every form of manual therapy has been studied identically.

Do not accept claims that chiropractic is proven to cure pain, restore normal function, treat internal disease, or prevent future illness. A professional directory may list broad conditions or indications, but that listing describes a service and is not independent evidence that treatment works for each condition.
How will you handle an uncertain response?
Ask what happens if your dog does not improve, improves only briefly, or worsens. The plan should identify a review point, the signs that trigger contact with your veterinarian, and whether the practitioner will recommend diagnostic reassessment instead of repeating adjustments indefinitely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions about safety and reasons to defer
What risks apply to my dog?
Ask about risks in the context of your dog’s age, diagnosis, previous surgery, bone health, medications, and temperament. Ask which complications require an immediate call to the veterinarian and which mild, short-lived responses would simply be monitored. The practitioner should explain risks and benefits before treatment, not after a problem occurs.
Could manipulation delay a needed diagnosis?
Ask directly whether proceeding could mask symptoms or postpone imaging, neurological evaluation, surgery, or another time-sensitive intervention. Manual therapy should never be used to reassure an owner that a serious condition has been ruled out when it has not.
What signs mean we should stop?
Agree in advance on stop signals, including a clear increase in pain, new weakness, worsening coordination, collapse, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, or inability to urinate or defecate. Sudden or severe neurological changes warrant prompt veterinary attention rather than another adjustment appointment.

Costs, logistics, and communication
What is the total expected cost?
Ask for the fee for the initial examination, each treatment, any travel or records charges, and any recommended reassessment. The available professional guidance does not establish a standard national price, standard number of visits, or universal schedule. A practitioner should therefore give you a practice-specific estimate rather than implying that a fixed course is medically required.
How many visits are proposed, and why?
Ask what determines the interval between visits and what evidence of progress is required before another session. Avoid prepaid packages that pressure you to continue regardless of the response. A plan should be revisited when the goal is met, the dog fails to improve, or a new diagnosis changes the priorities.
Who is responsible for follow-up?
Clarify whether the practitioner or primary veterinarian will monitor pain, mobility, medication interactions, activity restrictions, and new symptoms. Obtain contact instructions for evenings and weekends, especially if your dog has a condition that could deteriorate quickly.

Preparing your dog for a discussion or visit
- Record the pattern. Write down when signs occur, activity levels, stairs or jumping that are difficult, sleep changes, appetite, and any medication or supplement use.
- Take useful videos. Short videos of walking, rising, turning, and climbing can show your veterinarian a problem that is less obvious in the clinic. Do not deliberately provoke pain to obtain footage.
- Bring records and questions. Include imaging reports, laboratory results, surgical history, vaccination information, and the veterinarian’s current restrictions.
- Define a baseline. Choose a few repeatable observations, such as time needed to stand or willingness to walk to a specific point. Keep the measure consistent so changes are interpretable.
- Plan transport and handling. Use secure support, avoid unnecessary stairs, and tell the clinic if your dog is painful, fearful, or unable to walk normally.
Warning signs in a practitioner or business
- They discourage you from consulting or updating your veterinarian.
- They cannot provide a current license or explain who regulates their practice.
- They rely on a generic human course without animal-specific education.
- They promise a cure, guaranteed results, or treatment for unrelated internal diseases.
- They skip history and neurological or gait assessment before treatment.
- They refuse to explain risks, alternatives, fees, or when they would refer out.
- They pressure you into a package or continue despite worsening signs.
- They will not share findings with your veterinarian.
A practical decision rule
Consider proceeding only when your veterinarian has addressed the likely causes of the signs, the practitioner’s license and animal-specific training are verifiable, the proposed technique and risks are explained, and the plan has measurable goals, a defined review point, coordinated records, and transparent fees. If any of those elements is missing, pause and obtain clarification or another veterinary opinion.
Chiropractic may be discussed as one component of an individualized veterinary plan, but uncertainty about benefit means owners should judge it by documented goals and their dog’s response—not by testimonials or broad promises.
