Peaceful Pets Aquamation describes its own process as taking about 20 hours, but its claims that aquamation uses less energy and produces a smaller carbon footprint than flame cremation are company claims, not independently verified comparisons.
What happens during pet aquamation?
Alkaline hydrolysis is sometimes called aquamation or water-based cremation. Peaceful Pets says its patented equipment uses gentle water flow, low temperature and a 5% alkali solution to accelerate decomposition. The company compares the process with natural decomposition and says its cycle takes about 20 hours. Those details describe Peaceful Pets’ system; they are not a universal recipe or timing standard for every provider.

After the process, the provider’s service option determines whether a family receives remains. Ask the provider to explain what is returned, how the pet is identified and how remains are kept separate from other animals.

How Peaceful Pets describes its service
In a Catster interview updated June 19, 2025, Peaceful Pets owner Jerry Shevick described an emphasis on careful handling and giving families time. The interview reports that the company offers home pickup in SUVs with pet beds, refrigerated storage, a decorative container and a baked-clay paw print with returned remains. These are details reported in the interview, not independently audited guarantees.

Shevick summarized his stated approach this way: “We’re going to do the right thing by your pet, we’re going to protect them, we’re going to give them dignity, we’re not going to harm the environment,” he says. That expresses his philosophy; it does not substantiate a comparative environmental claim.
The interview also quotes Shevick saying that “within one week we do the process, so that the client gets back the remains within two weeks.” The company’s current FAQ says return timing varies by service and advises families to contact it, so the interview estimate should not be treated as a current guaranteed turnaround.
Individual, communal and partitioned service
Individual service
Peaceful Pets says its individual service returns the pet’s remains to the family in an urn selected by the client. An urn is optional: confirm what container, if any, is included and whether you can choose another arrangement.

Communal service
The company says communal service processes pets together, does not return remains to individual families, and scatters communal remains in the ocean. If return of remains matters to you, confirm the service type before arranging care.
Partitioned terminology
Peaceful Pets’ FAQ also uses the term “partitioned” and says each pet is separated during the process. Terms can vary between providers. Ask exactly how your pet is separated, how identification is maintained, and what happens to the remains before choosing a service.
What the environmental claims establish—and what they do not
Peaceful Pets’ FAQ claims its aquamation uses one twentieth the energy and has one tenth the carbon footprint of cremation. It also claims no toxic emissions or greenhouse-gas contribution. These figures and statements belong to the company: the FAQ page does not provide a methodology, comparison boundary, underlying dataset or independent analysis. No independent comparative statistic is established by the available sources here, so the numbers should not be read as verified results applicable to every facility or cremation system.

If environmental impact is central to your decision, ask a provider what systems and assumptions its comparison covers and whether it can point to an independent life-cycle assessment. Local wastewater rules and the specific equipment being compared also matter; the company’s FAQ alone does not establish that every process or output is harmless.

- Is the service individual, communal or partitioned, and will any remains be returned?
- What identification and separation steps are used from pickup through return?
- Where will the pet be stored, and how will pickup or transfer from a veterinary hospital work?
- What is the expected timing for this specific service, and what is the total cost?
- Which urn or keepsake items are included, and which are optional?
- What evidence and methodology support any environmental comparison?
Peaceful Pets says families can bring a pet to its facility after calling, arrange transfer from a participating veterinary hospital, or ask their veterinarian to contact the company. Its FAQ describes a tracking system that assigns a unique ID and scans it during the aftercare journey. These are descriptions of the provider’s own workflow; families can ask how those steps apply to their pet.
