Yes. Cat fleas can bite humans, but they prefer animal hosts. People are most likely to be bitten when they share a home or other space with an infested pet. Newly emerged fleas can also move from the environment onto a person or pet.
Why cat fleas bite people
The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, primarily feeds on animals, but it can take a blood meal from a person. Fleas developing in carpets, bedding, or other places where pets rest may emerge hungry and jump onto whichever suitable host is nearby. That is why bites can continue even when you do not see fleas on your cat at the moment.

Finding itchy marks does not, by itself, prove that fleas caused them. Flea bites can cause discomfort, itching, and skin irritation, but a mark’s appearance alone is not a reliable identification.
Do cat fleas live on people?
People can be bitten, but they are not the flea’s preferred host. The main problem is usually an infested animal and the places in the home where flea eggs and immature stages develop—not fleas establishing themselves on a person. Newly emerged, unfed fleas may move from that environment onto people or pets.

What flea bites can—and cannot—tell you about disease
Fleas can carry pathogens, but an ordinary flea bite should not be treated as proof that someone has caught a disease. The transmission route depends on the pathogen and circumstances. For example, CDC describes murine typhus as associated with infected cat fleas. Other flea-associated infections have different routes: cat-scratch disease bacteria can be shed in flea feces and introduced through a cat scratch, while people acquire the tapeworm Dipylidium by swallowing a flea infected with tapeworm larvae. These are distinct mechanisms, not a claim that every bite or routine contact with a cat causes these illnesses.
How to get rid of cat fleas in the home
Flea control requires coordinated attention to pets and their environment. A flea comb can help remove fleas from a cat, but combing alone will not clear an infestation from a home. CDC’s guidance combines sanitation, treatment of every pet, home treatment, and follow-up.

1. Clean places where flea stages may develop
- Wash pet bedding, rugs, and other bedding.
- Vacuum carpets and floors, including edges and areas where pets rest; sweep hard floors and wall edges.
- Continue vacuuming and sanitation during follow-up, rather than treating cleaning as a one-time step.
2. Address every pet
Treat every pet in the household, not only the one on which you first noticed fleas. CDC describes bathing pets with soap and water and then using a flea comb, paying particular attention to the face, neck, and area in front of the tail. Ask a veterinarian which flea-control product is suitable for your cat and household, and follow that product’s label. A comb is a removal aid, not a substitute for an appropriate prevention or treatment plan.
3. Coordinate home treatment with pet treatment
CDC advises starting home treatment at the same time as pet treatment. A licensed commercial applicator can help identify suitable indoor and yard products. Outdoors, focus on shaded areas and places pets use. Follow product labels and professional directions; the right approach depends on the product and setting.

4. Follow through after the first treatment
Flea life stages do not all respond equally to insecticides and other products. CDC says two or more follow-up treatments within 5–10 days after the first application are needed to address all stages. Keep up vacuuming and sanitation during this period, and observe the applicable product label and professional instructions.
How long flea control can take
It may take longer than one cleaning or treatment to bring an infestation under control. CDC says moderate to severe infestations can take months. Merck Veterinary Manual describes two to three months as typical for household control, depending on the flea life cycle and environmental conditions; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine also cautions that environmental control may take several months. Seeing fleas early in a coordinated treatment period does not, by itself, show that the plan has failed.

Preventing another infestation
- Check pets regularly and ask a veterinarian about an appropriate year-round flea-control plan.
- Limit pets’ contact with wild and stray animals.
- Vacuum frequently and wash pet bedding regularly.
- Reduce suitable shaded, humid habitat in the yard, especially in areas pets use.
