Check that surface and its construction before measuring your pet, then compare the animal’s measurements with the door’s usable opening—not merely its “small,” “medium” or “large” label. Finally, weigh access controls and weather features against how the opening will be used.
Which type of pet door fits your home?
Pet doors are not one-size-fits-all products. Installation method affects placement, compatibility, permanence and the work involved. Lowe’s distinguishes door-, wall- and sliding-door options, while its cat-door guide also discusses window options. A product type alone does not prove compatibility with your particular home; verify the selected model’s requirements.

How do you measure your pet for a pet door?
Use the sizing instructions for the exact model you are considering. Measure the animal as directed by that manufacturer, then compare those measurements with the usable flap opening. The frame and the cutout dimensions are different measurements and do not tell you how much room the pet has to pass through.

- Find the model’s sizing chart and manual. Follow its stated measurement method rather than relying on a generic size label.
- Measure your pet as instructed. Compare the relevant body measurements with the opening dimensions listed for that model.
- Check the usable opening separately. Make sure the pet can pass through the flap opening; do not substitute the outer frame or required cutout size.
- Apply only the manufacturer’s stated clearance rule. Pet-Tek’s sizing guide says the pet’s width plus 25 mm should fit within the usable opening width, and body depth plus 25 mm should fit within its usable opening height. That is Pet-Tek’s rule for its guidance, not a universal standard. Consult its sizing guide and product range.
PetSafe’s product page lists one interior two-way locking cat door for pets up to 15 pounds, with a 5 3/4-inch by 5 3/4-inch flap opening. Those are specifications for that listed model, not a general size recommendation; confirm the current listing and fit instructions before choosing it. Check the PetSafe product details.
What should you check before cutting or installing?
Confirm the opening’s location and the surface’s construction before making a cut. Door thickness, material, wall depth and panel dimensions can determine whether a model fits. A wall opening may offer more placement choices but can involve more complex installation; a sliding panel may avoid permanent cutting but still needs to suit the track and preserve an appropriate locking arrangement.

Take extra care with glass
Do not treat a glass installation as a routine DIY cut. The PetSafe Big Cat Door manual states that tempered or double-pane glass cannot be cut after manufacture and advises consulting a professional glazier or glass manufacturer. That warning is from the manual for that product; check the current manual for the exact model you plan to install. The guidance is about product installation, not building-code advice. Compare the actual lock settings and decide when the flap should be closed. A lock controls use of the flap; it does not establish that the exterior door, yard or destination is safe. Consider the household’s access needs, including whether other pets or children could use the opening, and account for security as part of the installation choice.

Choose in this order: identify the best location and mounting type, confirm the surface can accept that installation, size the usable opening for your actual pet, and then compare access controls and weather features. If the surface is glass, establish its type and consult a glazier or glass manufacturer when required. This sequence prevents a convenient-looking option from being ruled out only after purchase or installation work has begun.
