How wildfire smoke can affect pets
“Smoke can irritate your pet’s eyes and respiratory tract,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says in its June 2026 Protect Your Pets from Wildfire Smoke guidance. Fine particles known as PM2.5 are the pollutant of greatest health concern in wildfire smoke. Exposure can irritate the eyes and airways and make breathing difficult, including after prolonged exposure to lower smoke levels.

Some animals need extra caution: older, younger, or pregnant pets, and animals with heart or lung disease, may be more vulnerable during poor air quality. Short-nosed dogs can have difficulty breathing in smoke or heat, and birds are particularly susceptible to smoke. Individual risks vary by animal and species.

Smoke and heat may occur together. EPA says evidence in people indicates their combined effects are worse than smoke alone and that this is likely true for pets; that is a cautious extrapolation, not a measured animal-specific statistic. Keep pets cool, offer water, and limit exposure and exertion.

What to do during smoky conditions
Use air-quality information to guide outdoor time
Check your local Air Quality Index (AQI) and the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. Keep pets inside as much as possible and limit outdoor activity, especially strenuous play or exercise. When a pet needs to go outside to relieve itself, make the trip brief and return indoors.
If an animal usually lives outdoors, bring it to a cooler, less smoky place indoors if possible. Keep fresh water available at all times.

Make indoor air cleaner without overheating the home
Choose a room where pets can spend time with doors and windows closed when the home can stay at a safe temperature. A portable air cleaner can help create a cleaner-air room; a high-efficiency filter in a central HVAC system is another option if the system can use that filter. EPA’s wildfire smoke factsheets discuss these measures. No particular device or filter is established here as a guarantee of safe air.
Reduce indoor particle sources: avoid frying or broiling, vacuuming, candles, fireplaces and woodstoves, smoking, and vaping. To manage heat as well as smoke, shade windows before the house heats up. If it is cooler at night, ventilate when appropriate, then close windows and run a portable air cleaner. Do not seal up a home if doing so could make it dangerously hot.

Signs that warrant a call to the veterinarian
EPA advises consulting a veterinarian if you notice any of the following. These signs are reasons to seek veterinary advice, not a way to diagnose smoke injury:
- Excessive coughing or gagging
- Trouble breathing, including open-mouth, noisy, or rapid breathing
- Red or watery eyes, nasal discharge, or inflammation of the throat or mouth
- Reluctance to eat hard food, reduced appetite, or reduced thirst
- Excessive panting, fatigue, or weakness
- Disorientation, an uneven gait, or stumbling
Cats may show restlessness, seek a cool spot, pant, drool, or have sweaty paws. Seek urgent veterinary help for severe or worsening breathing problems.

Prepare to evacuate with pets
Plan where each pet can go before smoke or an evacuation order makes travel urgent. Not all emergency shelters accept animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends identifying animal-accepting shelters or alternatives such as family, local relief organizations, or rescue groups in its Pets in Evacuation Centers guidance, dated January 30, 2025.

- Keep permanent identification current and make sure you know where each pet tends to hide when stressed.
- Get pets accustomed to their carriers and practice loading them and leaving.
- Prepare food, water, medication, sanitation supplies, first-aid supplies, and important records.
- Confirm more than one destination that can accept your animals, if possible.
Follow local officials’ evacuation instructions. Do not delay leaving to gather supplies or return to an unsafe area. If pets must be left behind, EPA says never to tie them up.
