Do not bring a pet pig home until six things are clear: pigs are permitted at your address, you can provide secure housing and daily care, a companion-pig veterinarian is available, the diet and water plan is sound, everyone in the household can live with this individual pig, and you have money and backup plans for the animal’s entire commitment. Get answers in writing where practical, verify legal requirements with the relevant authority, and ask the rescue or current caregiver about this pig rather than relying on general “mini pig” claims.
1. Is a pig legally allowed at this address?
Permission is the first adoption gate. A pig may be treated as livestock, an exotic animal, or another regulated category rather than an ordinary household pet. Calling an animal a pet does not override zoning or animal-control rules. Adoption organizations also cannot give you a legal exemption for your property.

Questions for public authorities
- Does local zoning allow a pig on this parcel, and how does the jurisdiction classify it?
- Does animal control require registration, permits, inspections, identification, or minimum property standards?
- Are there limits related to noise, sanitation, setbacks, outdoor access, or the number of animals?
- Which office gives the final answer, and can it confirm the rule in writing?
Questions for private rule-makers
- Does your lease prohibit pigs or restrict animals by species, weight, or classification?
- Does a homeowners association, condominium board, insurer, or mortgage agreement impose a separate restriction?
- If you move, have you identified realistic pig-friendly housing rather than assuming another landlord will agree?
Ask the local authority and the person who controls the property directly. Keep approvals, permits, and correspondence with the adoption records. A rescue’s policy is useful information about its placements, but it is not local legal advice.

2. Can you provide safe housing and normal daily care?
A suitable setup must keep the pig contained, protect it from weather and hazards, provide a clean resting area, and allow normal behaviors such as rooting, exploring, resting, and moving around. Welfare guidance addresses housing and opportunities for normal behavior; the rescue can explain what has worked for this particular pig.

Containment and security
- Is the outdoor area securely fenced against digging, pushing, climbing, and gaps at ground level?
- Can gates be latched reliably, including when children or visitors use them?
- Are poisonous plants, chemicals, open water, electrical hazards, sharp edges, and escape routes removed?
- Can you separate the pig safely during introductions, cleaning, illness, or a repair?
Shelter and comfort
- Is there weather-appropriate shelter with shade and a dry, comfortable place to rest?
- What is your plan for heat, cold, rain, mud, and sudden weather changes?
- Can bedding and resting surfaces be kept clean without leaving the pig wet or exposed?
- If the pig will enter the house, are floors, doors, stairs, and rooms arranged to prevent injury and property damage?
Daily work and enrichment
List who will provide food and fresh water, clean the area, check the pig’s condition, secure it at night if needed, and provide safe enrichment. Ask the rescue which routines, handling methods, and enrichment activities the pig already knows. Have an experienced veterinarian or qualified pig-care adviser review the proposed setup before adoption; a generic enclosure plan may not suit every pig or property.
3. Which veterinarian will treat the pig?
Find a veterinarian who sees companion pigs before you commit. Some practices treat livestock but do not accept pet pigs, while others have limits on equipment, hospitalization, or emergency coverage. Call the practice and confirm that it will treat this species in your area.
Questions for the practice
- Does the veterinarian routinely treat companion pigs, and who covers emergencies outside normal hours?
- What preventive-care visits, examinations, testing, or vaccinations does the veterinarian recommend for this individual?
- What sterilization procedure is appropriate, and when should it occur?
- Which warning signs require an urgent call, and where would the pig be hospitalized if necessary?
- How must the pig be transported, and can the practice advise on safe handling if the animal will not walk or cannot be lifted?
- What fees should you expect for routine visits, procedures, diagnostics, hospitalization, and emergency care?
There is no single schedule or universal price that applies to every pig. Base medical decisions on an examination and the veterinarian’s advice, not on an adoption listing or an internet timetable.

Ask the rescue or current caregiver for examination notes, medication history, sterilization status, test results, vaccination information if applicable, allergies, previous injuries, chronic conditions, dental or hoof care, and the date of the last veterinary visit. Ask what handling the pig tolerates and whether it has ever shown fear, biting, charging, guarding, or difficulty with transport. Written records let your veterinarian identify missing care and plan a safe transition.

4. What will the pig eat and drink?
Ask for the exact feed, portion routine, treats, supplements, and water setup used now. A sudden change can create feeding problems, so make any transition with veterinary guidance. The North American Pet Pig Association care sheet dated February 28, 2025, identifies high-quality pot-bellied-pig food and clean, fresh water as diet fundamentals and advises following veterinary advice.
Food questions
- What product or feed type is the pig eating, how much, and how often?
- Which foods have caused problems, and what treats are permitted?
- How will you prevent children, visitors, or other animals from giving unsafe food?
- Where will feed be stored so it stays dry and inaccessible to pests?
Legal restrictions on feed
Food rules can be legal requirements, not merely welfare suggestions. In England, official guidance prohibits feeding catering waste from domestic or commercial kitchens to pigs and restricts some animal-origin materials as pig feed. Do not apply those England-specific rules automatically elsewhere; check current rules for your jurisdiction and follow your veterinarian’s diet plan.
5. Do the people and animals in your home fit this individual pig?
Bring every household member into the decision before the adoption is final. Ask the rescue to describe the pig’s temperament, triggers, handling history, activity level, and response to visitors. Meet the pig more than once if the organization permits, and observe how it behaves when approached, touched, moved, fed, and redirected.

- How will you separate the pig from dogs, cats, poultry, or other animals during introductions?
- What barriers and supervision will remain in place after the first meeting?
- Does the rescue know of prey-drive, chasing, food-guarding, or previous conflicts involving this pig?
Social needs
Ask whether this pig has lived with other pigs, how it responds to isolation, and what companionship the rescue recommends. Pig Placement Network includes the feasibility of a second pig among its suitability questions. Treat that as an individual-placement assessment, not a universal rule that every pig must have a pig companion. Your space, resources, and the animals’ personalities all matter.

6. Can you sustain the time, money, and transport commitment?
Write a realistic care plan rather than relying on enthusiasm. Daily work includes feeding, water checks, cleaning, observation, enrichment, and safe handling. Some pigs need more training, medical management, or environmental control than their listing suggests.
Budget
- Can you pay for routine veterinary care, sterilization or other recommended procedures, diagnostics, medication, and emergencies?
- Can you replace fencing, shelter, bedding, water equipment, or enrichment when they fail?
- Have you allowed for transport costs and possible specialized equipment?
Adoption sources specifically ask whether applicants can afford surgery and transport. No verified source establishes one universal cost, so request a written estimate from your veterinarian for likely procedures and ask what emergency payment arrangements exist.
Backup care and travel
- Who will care for the pig if you are ill, work long hours, or travel?
- Has that person met the pig and learned the feeding, cleaning, containment, and emergency routines?
- Can the backup caregiver reach the property and safely handle the pig?
Transport and emergencies
Plan how the pig will travel to the veterinarian before an emergency. Ask the practice what vehicle, crate, ramp, sling, or number of handlers it recommends. A pig that will not walk or cannot be safely lifted may require a different plan than an ordinary car trip. Keep the veterinarian’s phone number, emergency address, records, and transport instructions together.

Also identify your own failure points: a move, a change in household, worsening behavior, an unexpected medical diagnosis, or loss of the primary caregiver. A safe contingency plan is a condition of responsible adoption, not an admission that you expect to fail. Do not promise a specific outcome until the rescue confirms its policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. England: additional keeper duties
The following requirements apply to England and may change, so confirm them with current government guidance before acquiring a pig. GOV.UK states: “As a keeper, you’re legally responsible for the welfare of your pig.”
- Obtain a county parish holding number for the land and buildings where the pig is kept.
- Register as a pig keeper with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to obtain a herd mark.
- Identify a pig before moving it off the premises.
- Report and record applicable pig movements.
- Obtain an APHA licence to walk a pig outside the premises.
- Do not feed pigs catering waste from domestic or commercial kitchens; observe the additional restrictions on certain animal-origin materials.
These are legal duties for England, not a worldwide checklist. Keepers elsewhere should contact the responsible national and local authorities for current registration, movement, identification, feed, and welfare rules.
9. Ask the rescue for an individual-pig briefing
Use the appointment to fill in facts that generic care pages cannot provide:

- What are the pig’s established routines for eating, sleeping, toileting, handling, and entering transport?
- What behavior has been observed around food, children, visitors, other animals, gates, and veterinary handling?
- What housing, feed, enrichment, and boundaries have worked so far?
- Which records, medications, procedures, registrations, and supplies accompany the pig?
- What transition period does the rescue recommend, and whom should you call if questions arise?
Ask to see the pig perform ordinary behaviors rather than judging it from a photo or a breed label. Do not assume a guaranteed adult size or a universal “miniature” temperament; the available sources do not establish those claims.
10. Use a written go/no-go decision
Complete this worksheet with the authority, veterinarian, property decision-maker, and rescue. A “not yet” answer means postpone adoption until the gap is resolved.
| Decision area | Pass evidence | Not ready when… |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | Written confirmation from the relevant authority and property decision-maker | Rules are unknown, conflicting, or only verbally assumed |
| Housing | Secure containment, shelter, clean rest area, weather plan, and enrichment plan | The pig could escape, overheat, become wet or chilled, or lack a safe retreat |
| Veterinary care | A practice confirms it treats companion pigs and an emergency plan is documented | No accepting veterinarian, transport method, or funds for urgent care |
| Diet | Current feed, transition instructions, fresh-water setup, and local feed rules are understood | Food will be improvised or legal restrictions have not been checked |
| Household fit | Adults agree, children have supervision rules, and animal introductions can be controlled | Someone objects, supervision is unavailable, or existing pets cannot be separated |
| Continuity | Daily caregiver, backup caregiver, budget, travel plan, and return arrangement are confirmed | One person is the only caregiver or the rescue has no clear failure plan |
11. Prepare before collection day
- Save legal approvals, the adoption agreement, medical records, feeding instructions, and emergency contacts in one accessible place.
- Finish fencing, shelter, resting, water, cleaning, and separation areas before the pig arrives.
- Buy only supplies that fit the veterinarian’s and rescue’s instructions; avoid changing feed or handling methods without advice.
- Confirm the appointment or intake call with the companion-pig veterinarian and ask what records to bring.
- Set up the transport method recommended by the veterinarian and rescue, including safe loading and unloading.
- Brief every household member and backup caregiver on gates, food, supervision, handling, and the pig’s retreat space.
- Confirm the rescue’s contact and return or rehoming procedure one more time before leaving with the pig.
If any core gate remains unresolved, wait. A delayed adoption is safer than bringing a pig into a home that cannot legally, medically, financially, or practically support it.
