It is a broad marketing and husbandry term covering miniature breeds and mixed pet pigs whose adult size can vary substantially. “Pet pig” describes the animal’s role in a household, not a separate, predictable size class. Plan for a strong, intelligent pig that may weigh 45.5–68.2 kg (100–150 lb) or more, can keep growing for several years, and needs secure space, daily activity, species-appropriate food, specialized veterinary care and lifelong hoof and dental maintenance.
The practical choice is not between two neatly defined breeds. Evaluate the individual pig’s likely adult size, ancestry, relatives’ maturity, body condition, housing requirements, local laws and your ability to provide care for 10–18 years or longer.

What is the difference between a pet pig and a mini pig?
A pet pig is any pig kept as a companion. A mini pig usually means a miniature or smaller-bodied pet pig, but the label has no standardized adult weight or height. Potbellied pigs were among the first miniature pigs widely sold in the United States; subsequent mixing with other pig varieties has produced a much wider range of body shapes and adult sizes.
That makes the terms describe different things: “pet” identifies the pig’s household role, while “mini” suggests a type without guaranteeing a final size. A pig advertised as miniature may still become a large, heavy animal. Merck Veterinary Manual reports that miniature pet pigs commonly weigh 45.5–68.2 kg, and some exceed that range. Heavier animals may reflect interbreeding, overfeeding or obesity, so weight alone does not reveal ancestry.

| Question | What the label can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| Is it a pet pig? | It is intended to live with people as a companion rather than be raised primarily for production. |
| Is it a mini pig? | It is marketed as miniature or smaller than a standard farm pig; there is no universal adult-size standard. |
| Can the label predict adult size? | No. Breed mix, genetics, age, nutrition, body condition and maturity of the parents all matter. |
| Does “teacup” solve the uncertainty? | No. Merck states that “the term teacup pig has no strict definition.” |
Compare actual records and mature relatives rather than relying on a sales name. A seller’s estimate is not a veterinary guarantee, particularly when the parents are still young.
How big do mini pigs get?
Merck’s current pet-owner overview gives 45.5–68.2 kg as a common range for miniature pet pigs and notes that some are heavier. Merck’s potbellied-pig reference says adults should not exceed 18 inches at the shoulder; mature, trim animals can exceed 100 lb, while most average below 200 lb. Those are veterinary-reference descriptions of particular groups, not promises for every pig sold as “mini.”
Height and weight are affected by skeletal frame, breed mix, sex, nutrition, activity and body condition. An overweight pig can weigh far more than its healthy target without being genetically larger. Conversely, deliberate underfeeding does not safely keep a pig miniature; it causes malnutrition and other welfare problems.

Why a piglet’s size is a poor predictor
Piglets can look deceptively small in advertisements. Merck says miniature pigs rarely reach full size until 2–3 years of age. VCA Canada cautions that growth may continue until four to five years. These references describe different animals and definitions of maturity, so the safest expectation is that a pig may continue growing and filling out for years.
Parent size helps only when the parents are genuinely mature and the ancestry is documented. A young parent that is still growing can pass on genes for a much larger adult than its current appearance suggests. Grandparents, siblings and previous offspring can provide useful context, but none can guarantee an individual’s final measurements.
What “teacup pig” means
“Teacup pig” has no strict definition. It is not a veterinary size category, and there is no recognized adult weight that makes a pig teacup. Treat a promise that an animal will remain tiny as an unverified marketing claim unless it is supported by transparent lineage, mature relatives and veterinary records.
Do mini pigs stay small?
Usually, no: they stay smaller than many production pigs, but they do not stay piglet-sized. Their bodies mature slowly, and a two-year-old may still gain muscle and fat over the next several years. Design housing, fencing, transport arrangements and lifting or handling plans for the pig’s plausible adult size from the beginning.

Body condition is as important as the number on a scale. Pigs gain excess weight easily, and obesity can cause lameness, diabetes and other health problems. A pig that appears “small” because it is underfed is not healthy. Ask a pig-experienced veterinarian to assess body condition and set a feeding plan.
How long do pet and mini pigs live?
Lifespan varies with genetics, preventive care, weight, housing and disease. Merck reports that healthy potbellied pigs commonly live 10–15 years, with a wider reported span of 8–25 years; it notes that obesity and unusually small size may shorten life. VCA Canada gives a 15–18-year average for potbellied pigs. The RSPCA cites a shorter five-to-ten-year average for the breeds it discusses. These figures may represent different pigs and care conditions, so they should not be treated as a precise guarantee.
Prepare for a decade-plus commitment that can extend into the late teens or beyond. Arrange care for travel, illness, emergencies and changes in housing before acquiring the pig.
What do I need to care for a mini pig?
Successful care combines a pig-safe environment, measured nutrition, daily exercise and enrichment, preventive veterinary work and planning for adult size. A small crate, a bowl of scraps and a short walk are not an adequate permanent setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Pigs root, investigate and chew. Give an indoor pig a defined sleeping area, a separate eating area and a suitable elimination area. Use sturdy, washable barriers and flooring that provides traction. A blanket or dirt-filled rooting box can direct normal rooting away from walls and furniture. Secure cabinets, rubbish bins, cleaning products, medicines and pesticides; a curious pig can open or damage them while searching for food.
Allow enough room to turn, walk, rest and engage in enrichment. Merck cautions that high-density apartments and condominiums are poor fits. Noise, flooring, landlord rules and neighbors may also make a seemingly convenient home unsuitable.
Outdoor space and climate protection
Provide secure fencing, a pig-safe lawn or other ground surface, shade and continuous access to clean water. Pigs cannot sweat effectively and can overheat; access to cool water or a mud area helps them regulate temperature. Outdoor areas must prevent escapes and protect against toxic plants, standing hazards, predators and extreme weather.

VCA gives one planning recommendation of at least 12 m² (about 130 ft²) for two pigs, or approximately 0.5 ft² per kilogram of body weight per pig. It also notes that recommendations vary with pig size. Treat this as a cited husbandry recommendation, not a universal legal minimum. A larger, heavier or more active pig needs more usable space.
Exercise and enrichment
Plan daily exercise, including at least two sessions totaling an hour according to VCA’s housing guidance, adjusted for age, health and weather. Scatter part of the measured ration, use sturdy puzzle feeders and rotate safe rooting materials or toys. Enrichment should encourage investigation without small parts that can be swallowed.
Merck describes potbellied pigs as intelligent and curious. Without outlets for those behaviors, boredom can produce destructive rooting, chewing or conflict. Some pigs challenge social rank around age two. Consistent boundaries, reward-based training, supervision and predictable routines are safer than punishment.
Feeding and weight control
Feed a nutritionally complete pig ration appropriate to life stage and body condition. Commercial starter, grower and maintenance feeds are sold as pellets or crumbles. Measure portions and divide them into two or more meals as advised by your veterinarian; do not leave unlimited feed available unless a professional has specifically recommended it.
Vegetables and small amounts of fruit can supplement a balanced ration, but high-calorie treats and table scraps quickly add excess energy. Fresh water must always be available. Feeding rules can also be legal requirements: for example, England’s official guidance prohibits catering waste and generally restricts animal-origin material. Rules differ elsewhere, so follow your local authority.
Recommended Free Tools
Use body condition, not a target “mini” appearance, to adjust food. Merck notes that overweight pigs can be difficult to slim down and may become lame or diabetic. Never intentionally underfeed to force a smaller adult size. Have a pig-experienced veterinarian set portions when the pig changes age, activity, reproductive status or health.
Veterinary, hoof and dental care
Locate a veterinarian who routinely treats pigs before the pig arrives. Ask about preventive examinations, vaccinations or parasite control used in your area, emergency access, safe sedation and transport. Merck specifically identifies routine hoof maintenance and special dental care as requirements. Hoof trims and dental procedures are recurring care obligations, not optional accessories; frequency depends on the individual pig and professional assessment.

Keep health and weight records, including appetite, manure, gait, breathing and skin changes. Pigs often hide illness until they are seriously affected. Seek urgent veterinary advice for collapse, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, inability to stand, severe lameness or a sudden refusal to eat.
Are mini pigs safe with children, dogs and cats?
A pig is a powerful, food-motivated animal, not a low-maintenance small pet. Children need supervised, calm interactions and should never ride, corner or take food from a pig. Teach everyone in the household to use gates and consistent cues.
Do not leave a pig unsupervised with dogs or cats. VCA warns that predatory responses can occur, even when animals have previously appeared friendly. Use secure separation, controlled introductions and a retreat that the pig can reach but other pets cannot. Never assume a pig’s small juvenile size makes an interaction safe.
What laws apply to keeping a pet pig?
Check zoning, land-use, animal-control and nuisance rules before paying a deposit. Merck notes that many ordinances classify potbellied pigs as livestock, which can prohibit them in residential areas or impose enclosure and waste requirements. A landlord, homeowners association or municipality may have stricter rules than a general companion-animal ordinance.
Requirements also vary by country. England’s official guidance, last updated 12 July 2023 by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Animal and Plant Health Agency, includes keeper registration plus identification, movement and feeding rules. Those requirements are specific to England; they are not worldwide law. Ask your local authority exactly what registration, identification, transport, slaughter, feed and disease-control rules apply where you live.

- Confirm legality. Obtain written information from zoning, animal control and land-use offices, and check lease or association rules.
- Plan for the adult animal. Map indoor and outdoor areas, fencing, shade, water, exercise routes and transport equipment using a realistic adult-size range rather than the piglet’s current measurements.
- Find veterinary care. Confirm a pig-experienced clinic, emergency hours, hoof and dental services, and how the clinic handles a heavy or frightened pig.
- Request records. Ask for breed or mix information, age, sex, reproductive status, current diet, health history and veterinary records.
- Examine relatives. Where possible, see mature parents and ask about grandparents, siblings and prior offspring. Record their ages and sizes; a young parent is not reliable evidence of final size.
- Assess the individual. Look for steady gait, clear eyes, normal breathing, clean skin and a healthy body condition. Arrange an independent veterinary examination if the seller permits it.
- Prepare supplies and routines. Have complete feed, secure bowls, water, bedding, rooting enrichment, barriers, cleaning materials and a safe transport plan ready before arrival.
- Set a long-term budget. Include feed, fencing repairs, enrichment, routine examinations, hoof and dental work, emergency treatment and potential climate-control or transport costs.
How to compare pigs when labels are unreliable
Use the following decision axes instead of “mini” versus “pet” as a binary choice:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Adult size | What are the mature weights and heights of documented relatives? Are those relatives fully grown? | Determines fencing, flooring, transport, handling and space. |
| Ancestry | What breeds or mixes are known, and is the information documented? | Mixed ancestry increases uncertainty when a label implies uniformity. |
| Growth stage | How old is the pig, and is it still filling out? | A young piglet cannot establish final adult size. |
| Body condition | Is the pig lean, ideal or overweight according to a veterinarian? | Weight influenced by obesity should not be mistaken for genetic size. |
| Housing fit | Can you provide secure indoor and outdoor areas, shade, water and rooting space? | Inadequate space leads to injury, escape and destructive behavior. |
| Veterinary access | Who will provide pig-specific preventive, hoof and dental care? | Many general small-animal practices lack pig equipment or expertise. |
| Legal status | Is the pig treated as livestock in your jurisdiction? | Registration, zoning, movement and feeding rules may apply. |
| Commitment | Can your household manage a 10–18-year obligation with variable emergency costs? | Rehoming a large adult pig is difficult when expectations were based on a piglet. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the smallest piglet
The smallest animal in a litter may be young, ill or simply at a different growth stage. Choose documented health and responsible records, not the lowest current weight.

Trusting a “teacup” guarantee
Because the term has no strict definition, a guarantee is not a measurable veterinary standard. Request mature family information and independent records instead.
Restricting food to preserve a tiny appearance
Underfeeding harms development. Use a complete ration, measured portions and veterinary body-condition checks.
Keeping a pig in a crate or small apartment permanently
Crates can assist short-term transport or management, but pigs need room to walk, root, exercise and rest. High-density housing is often unsuitable.

Rooting is normal. Redirect it with a safe box, suitable substrate and food-based enrichment rather than suppressing the behavior without an outlet.
Waiting until an emergency to find a veterinarian
Pig-specific care and safe transport can be difficult to arrange quickly. Establish the relationship before acquisition and keep the clinic’s emergency instructions accessible.
A realistic daily routine
- Morning: Check appetite, gait, manure, water and temperature; provide the measured first meal and a supervised exercise or rooting session.
- Midday: Refresh water, inspect fencing and shade, and offer a safe enrichment activity or part of the ration in a puzzle feeder.
- Evening: Provide the second measured meal, exercise, a brief health check and clean, dry bedding.
- Weekly: Inspect hooves and skin, rotate enrichment, check gates and flooring, and review weight or body-condition trends.
- As scheduled: Attend veterinary examinations and arrange professional hoof and dental maintenance; update the care plan as the pig grows.
This routine is manageable only when the household accepts the pig as a long-lived, physically strong animal with livestock-style needs. The right question is not whether the pig will remain tiny, but whether you can safely meet its needs at its likely adult size.
