Never leave a pet alone in a parked vehicle—not for a quick stop, with the window cracked, or because the car is in the shade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says a car’s interior can rise almost 20°F in the first 10 minutes even when a window is open slightly. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), relaying an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) estimate, reports that a car can reach 114°F after 30 minutes on an 80°F day. Take the pet with you, leave one adult behind, or change the plan.
A safe family trip also requires a properly secured animal, practice rides, water and medication, frequent breaks, and a check of airline and destination rules before departure. This U.S.-focused guide explains the decisions that prevent heat emergencies, escape, injury and avoidable travel stress.

Why a parked car is never a safe pet-sitting place
Vehicle temperature changes quickly because the cabin absorbs and traps heat. Opening a window does not make an unattended stop safe, and air conditioning cannot be relied on after the engine is turned off. The CDC’s “almost 20°F in the first 10 minutes” figure is a warning about how rapidly conditions can deteriorate, not a safe-time allowance. Read the CDC’s current guidance at Heat and Pets.
For a separate set of conditions, the FDA cites an AVMA estimate of 114°F inside a car after 30 minutes when the outdoor temperature is 80°F. That estimate should not be combined with the CDC figure as a universal heating rate; each describes a particular example. The FDA explanation is at Travel Training for You and Your Pets.

Dr. Louise Murray, vice president of the ASPCA Animal Hospital, states: “Pet owners should never leave their animals unattended in a parked vehicle.” The same ASPCA release warns that parked cars, even with windows open, become very hot quickly and can cause heatstroke or death. See the statement at ASPCA Cautions Pet Owners About Summer Safety.
Make the stop plan before you pull out
- Use drive-through service, curbside pickup or a pet-friendly location when practical.
- Have one adult stay with the pet while another person goes inside.
- Return the pet to the vehicle only when an adult is ready to continue driving, with the animal restrained and the cabin climate controlled.
- Never assume a familiar route, a mild-feeling morning or a shaded parking space removes the risk.
How to keep a dog or cat safe on a road trip
Road safety starts before the long journey. The CDC and ASPCA recommend building tolerance with a series of short drives, gradually increasing the distance. Watch how the animal responds rather than forcing a full-day trip after a single practice ride. The CDC’s current checklist is at Pet Travel Safety, and the ASPCA’s guidance is at Travel Safety Tips.

Choose a restraint that works in your specific vehicle
There is no source-backed universal winner between a harness and a crate. The safe choice is the one you can fit, attach and use correctly for this animal and this vehicle.

| Option | What to verify before departure | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Back-seat harness | It is attached to the seat buckle as directed, the pet remains seated in the back seat, and the fit does not allow escape or dangerous slack. | Do not claim a particular model is crash-tested or safer without model-specific evidence. |
| Carrier or crate | The animal can stand, sit, lie down and turn around; ventilation is adequate; and the crate is secured so it cannot slide or shift. | Airline crate rules are separate from car-use requirements and must be checked with the carrier and relevant authorities. |
Keep the animal in the back seat. Do not allow free roaming in the cabin, and do not let a dog ride with its head outside the window. Unrestrained animals can distract the driver, escape during a door opening or be thrown inside the vehicle during sudden braking.

Prepare the crate or carrier
- Measure the pet and confirm it can stand, sit, lie down and turn around without being compressed.
- Provide ventilation on the sides and keep openings unobstructed.
- Place the crate where it can be secured according to its instructions, then test for sliding and shifting before the trip.
- Use short practice rides so the animal can become comfortable with the carrier before a long departure.
Feed and schedule breaks
The CDC advises feeding three to four hours before departure to help reduce car sickness or vomiting. Bring the pet’s usual food rather than changing the diet on travel day. Plan frequent stops for dogs to use the bathroom and stretch, but take the animal with you whenever you leave the vehicle; a break is not permission to leave it parked alone.
Keep identification and health contacts accessible
Carry current identification information, vaccination records and any documents required for the destination. Keep the regular veterinarian’s number, a local emergency veterinary clinic at the destination and poison-control contact information available to the adults on the trip. Check the pet at least daily while away, even if it appears settled.

What to pack for a pet-inclusive trip
Pack the pet’s supplies in a dedicated, reachable bag rather than burying them under luggage. The CDC and ASPCA lists support the following checklist:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Fresh water and a bowl that can be used during stops.
- The pet’s normal food and a way to measure or serve it.
- A leash and, when appropriate, a spare leash or backup attachment.
- Waste bags and grooming supplies.
- All prescribed medications, with enough for the trip and instructions for use.
- Basic first-aid supplies suitable for the animal.
- Travel documents, identification details and vaccination records required by the destination.
- The correctly sized carrier, crate or back-seat harness, plus any hardware needed to secure it.
Keep water, medication and the leash where an adult can reach them without unloading the vehicle. A familiar blanket or toy may help the animal settle, but it does not replace restraint, ventilation or supervision.

Recognize heat stress and treat it as an emergency
Heat stress can progress quickly. AVMA lists these warning signs: anxiousness, excessive panting, restlessness, excessive drooling, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color and collapse. Review the full warning-sign guidance at AVMA Warm Weather Pet Safety.
What to do when signs appear
- Move the animal out of the hot environment immediately.
- Seek emergency veterinary care when any of the listed signs are observed, as AVMA advises.
- Call the emergency clinic while arranging transport so the staff can prepare for arrival.
- Do not treat a home cooling measure as a substitute for veterinary evaluation; the sources support urgent escalation, not a one-size-fits-all treatment protocol.
Collapse, unsteadiness or abnormal gum or tongue color are not symptoms to monitor casually during the next driving leg. Stop the trip and obtain professional help.
What should you check before flying with a pet?
Air travel adds requirements that vary by airline, route and destination. Start well before booking and verify the exact rules again shortly before departure. The CDC advises checking destination requirements, updating identification and vaccinations, considering a direct flight where possible and preparing the carrier and airport plan. Its detailed guidance is at CDC Pet Travel Safety.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify the airline’s current policy
- Ask the airline whether the pet can travel in the cabin, must travel as cargo, or is not accepted on that itinerary.
- Confirm carrier dimensions, permitted materials, labeling, documentation and check-in procedures for the aircraft and route.
- Ask about seasonal or route-specific embargoes and weather restrictions. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that policies differ among airlines and that some carriers restrict cargo transport in hot or cold weather; consult Flying with a Pet.
- Verify any fees, connection rules and limits on the number of pets per flight directly with the airline, because these details can change.
Verify destination requirements
Import permits, health certificates, vaccinations, microchip or identification rules and quarantine requirements can depend on the destination and the animal’s origin. Use the destination’s current official requirements rather than relying on a rule from a previous trip or another country. Confirm deadlines for veterinary examinations and documents before purchasing a nonrefundable ticket.
Prepare the airport routine
Use a carrier that meets the airline’s specifications, not merely one that worked in the car. Label it as required, keep identification and emergency contacts with you, and allow extra time for check-in and security procedures. A direct flight can reduce transfers and handling, but it does not eliminate the need to verify weather, carrier and destination rules.
Quick Recap
A practical departure and arrival checklist
The day before
- Recheck the airline, route and destination rules and weather restrictions.
- Confirm the pet’s documents, identification and medication.
- Inspect harness clips, crate fasteners, carrier ventilation and backup supplies.
- Pack water, food, bowl, leash, waste bags, first-aid supplies and grooming items where they are easy to reach.
At the start of a car trip
- Feed three to four hours before departure, following the pet’s normal diet.
- Secure the pet in the back seat before the vehicle moves.
- Set a schedule for bathroom and stretching stops.
- Assign an adult to supervise the pet whenever another family member leaves the vehicle.
At the destination
- Locate the regular veterinarian’s contact information, the nearest emergency clinic and poison-control contact.
- Check the pet daily for appetite, hydration, behavior, breathing and any signs of heat stress.
- Keep the same restraint and no-parked-car rule during sightseeing, meals and errands.
Common shortcuts that fail
- “It is only five minutes.” The CDC’s almost-20°F increase in the first 10 minutes shows why a short errand is not a safe exception.
- “The window is cracked.” Open windows do not prevent a parked car from becoming dangerously hot.
- “The pet is calm and knows the route.” Familiarity does not restrain an animal during sudden braking or prevent heat stress.
- “The car crate is automatically an airline crate.” Airlines set their own carrier and documentation requirements.
- “We can check the rules once we arrive.” Missing documents, weather embargoes or route restrictions can disrupt a trip before boarding.
