The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) is a compact French scent hound bred to hunt small game through rough brush and hedgerows. Expect an active, independent dog with a strong interest in scents, a freely used voice, and a rough coat that needs regular care. It can suit owners prepared to provide daily activity, leash and boundary management, training, and companionship.

A PBGV is not a good match for someone seeking a quiet, low-activity dog that can safely roam off leash or reliably ignore an enticing scent. Individual dogs differ, but the breed’s hunting background makes thoughtful outdoor management especially important.

History and original purpose

The PBGV was developed as a working hunting hound, not as a decorative lapdog. French hunters used it to follow small game, especially rabbits, through the rough scrub, brambles, and hedgerows of the Vendée. Its compact build and scenting ability suited work in difficult cover.

The breed’s hunting background helps explain its modern traits: a strong interest in scent, persistence, independence, and a voice that can help people locate a dog in cover. Those qualities can be entertaining at home, but they also mean owners need to manage walks and outdoor access carefully.

The PBGV is the smallest of four Griffon Vendéen varieties. The Petit and Grand types developed as distinct hounds, with differences beyond height, so the PBGV should not be treated simply as a miniature Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1990.

Appearance and coat

A PBGV is compact and sturdy, with a rough, natural-looking coat. Typical features include:

  • A head with long eyebrows, beard, and moustache
  • Low-set drop ears
  • A high-set tail
  • A harsh coat with a thick undercoat
  • A white base with colored markings

The rough, tousled appearance is part of the breed’s character. The Royal Kennel Club standard says the coat should be harsh to the touch, with a thick undercoat, and that grooming should retain its natural appearance rather than trim or stylize it.

PBGV temperament and personality

The Royal Kennel Club standard describes the PBGV as “Happy, extrovert, independent, yet willing to please.” The French breed-club page reproducing the FCI standard describes the temperament as “Docile but wilful and passionate.” These are breed-standard descriptions, not guarantees about an individual dog.

In daily life, willingness to please can coexist with hound persistence and a strong interest in scent. A PBGV may be affectionate and entertaining while also being busy, inquisitive, and more interested in a trail than in an owner’s cue. Many enjoy canine company, consistent activity, and chances to investigate their surroundings.

Are PBGVs good family dogs?

A PBGV may fit an active family, but temperament and socialization vary between individual dogs. The American Kennel Club notes that the breed was developed to work in a pack and can do well with other dogs and children. As with any dog, supervise interactions with young children and teach children to treat the dog gently and respectfully.

Positive, gradual exposure to people, handling, household sounds, other dogs, and different environments can help a puppy build confidence. Socialization should respect the dog’s comfort rather than force greetings or interactions.

How much do PBGVs bark?

The Royal Kennel Club standard describes the PBGV as “A strong, active hound capable of a day’s hunting, with a good voice purposefully used.” A PBGV may vocalize while excited or following a scent. Consider your neighbors and the sound conditions in your home before choosing this breed.

Training can teach useful cues and routines, but owners should not expect it to erase a breed trait. Apartment living may work for some dogs and owners, but activity needs and vocalization deserve careful consideration.

Exercise, enrichment, and safe containment

PBGVs need regular activity and opportunities to explore. The Royal Kennel Club breed profile gives “up to 1 hour per day” as general exercise guidance, while the American Kennel Club describes the breed as very active and recommends ample opportunity to explore. These are general guides, not a prescription for every dog; age, health, weather, and conditioning affect an individual dog’s needs.

Useful outlets include:

  • Regular walks with safe, supervised opportunities to sniff
  • Tracking and scent-work games
  • Food puzzles and suitable scatter-feeding activities
  • Recall practice on a long line in a safe location
  • Reward-based activities such as obedience, rally, or agility
  • Hiking or running with a healthy, properly conditioned adult dog

A secure dog leash is useful for walks. The American Kennel Club advises leash exercise outside a yard because an appealing scent may draw a PBGV away from its handler. Do not assume that breed description or training alone makes off-leash recall reliable.

Fencing and escape prevention

Use secure boundaries and supervise outdoor time. Check gates and the condition of any yard enclosure, especially if your dog shows interest in getting out. No boundary system removes the need for supervision, and owners should follow leash rules in public spaces.

Training a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen

PBGVs are capable of learning, but their independence and scent drive can make them less automatic than highly biddable breeds. Training is most useful when it is rewarding, varied, and consistent.

  1. Use rewards that matter. Food, toys, play, or access to sniffing can reinforce behavior.
  2. Keep sessions short. End while the dog is still engaged rather than repeating a drill until it loses interest.
  3. Vary activities. Mix basic cues with scent games, movement, tricks, or play.
  4. Add distractions gradually. Begin in a setting where the dog can succeed before practicing around stronger smells, people, or dogs.
  5. Manage risk. Use a leash, long line, or secure enclosure instead of testing recall near traffic or wildlife.

Early training and positive socialization are valuable because curiosity and scent-following can create safety challenges. Reward-based methods give the dog a reason to cooperate. Possible organized activities include obedience, rally, tracking, scent work, and agility. Local PBGV training classes or a qualified instructor can help structure practice, but no class can guarantee off-leash reliability.

Grooming and routine maintenance

Plan for frequent coat care. The American Kennel Club recommends a complete weekly brushing and says the coat should comb through easily afterward; the Royal Kennel Club profile lists grooming more than once a week. Pay attention to the beard, eyebrows, ears, legs, and areas where tangles form.

A practical routine is:

  1. Brush the coat in sections.
  2. Work gently through developing tangles rather than pulling hard.
  3. Follow with a metal comb to check for snags.
  4. Check the ears, paws, nails, skin, and mouth while the dog is calm.
  5. Bathe as needed; many owners follow a roughly monthly bath and grooming routine, adjusted to the dog’s coat and lifestyle.

A dog slicker brush and a metal dog comb are reasonable basic tools for brushing and combing. A particular brand or tool is not required for every dog.

Check drop ears regularly for excess wax or debris. The American Kennel Club recommends weekly ear checks. Keep nails trimmed and introduce grooming equipment gradually with rewards.

If you use a professional, look for a groomer familiar with rough coats. The goal is a clean, healthy dog whose coat keeps its natural appearance. A rough-coat dog grooming service may help with bathing, nail care, or coat maintenance.

Health and veterinary care

The American Kennel Club describes the PBGV as generally healthy and says responsible breeders screen breeding stock for issues including neck pain syndrome, hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and cardiac and eye anomalies. Screening recommendations identify questions to ask; they do not mean every PBGV will develop these conditions, and screening cannot guarantee an individual dog’s future health.

Primary open-angle glaucoma

The American Kennel Club and Royal Kennel Club identify primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) DNA testing among relevant breed-health recommendations. The Royal Kennel Club also recommends eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme as pre-breeding good practice. Ask a veterinarian or breed health contact to explain test results and what they mean for a particular dog.

Health testing before buying a puppy

Ask the breeder which recommended tests have been completed and request documentation for both parents. The American Kennel Club lists ophthalmologist evaluation and a POAG DNA test among national breed-club recommendations. The Royal Kennel Club recommends POAG-5 DNA testing and eye testing under its referenced scheme.

Request the test results and ask about the testing organization, registered dog information, and interpretation. Screening can reduce uncertainty, but it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never become ill. A veterinarian can help you understand results and plan preventive care.

Food, weight, and everyday care

Choose a nutritionally appropriate diet for your dog’s age, health, and activity, and provide fresh water. Ask your veterinarian for an individualized feeding plan, particularly for a puppy, senior, or dog with a medical condition.

Measure meals and account for training treats as part of the daily food plan. Your veterinarian can help assess body condition and adjust portions as activity or health changes.

At home, provide a safe resting area and rotate suitable enrichment. An interactive dog puzzle toy can make food more engaging. Choose toys and chews for the individual dog and supervise when appropriate; no product replaces training, activity, or management.

Before committing, meet adult PBGVs and speak with breed organizations, reputable breeders, or rescue groups. Ask about activity, scent-driven exploration, vocalization, grooming, temperament, and health records. An adult dog can also give you a clearer idea of its individual energy level and personality.
