The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) is a small, rough-coated French scent hound: outgoing and affectionate, but also active, vocal, and inclined to follow its nose. It can be a rewarding companion for someone who enjoys walks, training, and an involved household routine. It is less suited to an owner seeking a quiet dog, minimal grooming, or dependable off-leash behavior in an unfenced area.

What is a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen?

The name describes the breed: “petit” means small, “basset” means low to the ground, “griffon” refers to a rough coat, and “Vendéen” points to France’s Vendée region. The PBGV was developed there to hunt small game, including rabbit, by scent over rough terrain. Its nose, stamina, and independent working style still matter in everyday life.

It belongs to the Griffon Vendéen hound family and is the smallest of four varieties described in the AKC breed history. The smaller variety was recognized by its club in 1922; the Petit and Grand were classified as separate breeds in the 1950s. The AKC records a separate PBGV standard in a 1952 standards book and U.S. recognition on December 1, 1990.

What does a PBGV look like?

The U.S. breed standard describes a compact, robust dog standing 13–15 inches at the withers. Its rough, harsh coat is meant to look casual and tousled, not sculpted or styled. Long eyebrows, a beard and moustache, and a strong, tapered tail carried like a saber give the breed its distinctive expression.

Standard colors are white with markings that may be lemon, orange, black, sable, tricolor, or grizzle. The standard describes the PBGV’s temperament as “Confident, happy, extroverted, independent yet willing to please, never timid nor aggressive.” That is the breed ideal, not a guarantee of an individual dog’s behavior. See the PBGV Club of America breed standard.

What is a PBGV’s temperament like?

The breed club describes PBGVs as active, curious, busy, happy, alert, friendly, intelligent, affectionate, and willing to please. Many enjoy people and canine company, and the AKC says they generally do well with other dogs and children. Compatibility depends on the individual dog and household; young children should always be supervised around dogs.

Their friendliness does not make them placid house pets. A PBGV may be interested in whatever is moving or smelling outdoors and can have its own agenda. That combination of sociability and independence is central to understanding the breed.

Are Petit Basset Griffon Vendéens easy to train?

PBGVs are intelligent and capable of learning, but their scent-hound instincts can compete with a handler’s request. Training tends to work best when it is consistent, rewarding, and engaging to the dog. The breed club notes that PBGVs participate in obedience, rally, tracking, scent work, and agility; these activities can give a busy dog useful outlets.

Do not assume that recall will override a fresh trail. The AKC advises keeping a PBGV on leash outside its yard because it may follow a scent and ignore other cues. A secure outdoor area, practiced leash habits, and recall training are sensible safeguards, not a promise of off-leash reliability.

How much exercise and attention does a PBGV need?

The AKC describes the breed as very active and curious and says it requires a great deal of exercise. Daily walks and opportunities to explore safely are important, alongside interaction and activities that engage its mind. The exact routine depends on the dog’s age, health, and individual energy; the sources do not specify a universal daily exercise quota.

Do PBGVs bark a lot?

The breed standard says the PBGV has a “good voice,” which it uses freely. The breed club’s owner FAQ says barking often has a trigger, such as a doorbell or street noise, rather than happening for no reason. That is useful context, but it does not mean every dog will be quiet or that alert barking can always be prevented. Consider neighbors and the dog’s vocal nature before choosing the breed.

How much grooming does a PBGV need?

The rough coat needs routine care, but it should not be clipped or sculpted into a polished shape. The standard says clipping, scissoring, shaping, or sculpting is contrary to breed type; the intended look is naturally tousled rather than neglected.

  • Weekly: Check the ears and remove excess wax and debris.

These intervals come from the AKC care guidance. A coat that needs regular brushing and combing may not suit someone looking for a very low-maintenance dog.

Are Petit Basset Griffon Vendéens healthy?

The breed club describes PBGVs as generally healthy, while noting reported conditions that owners and breeders should discuss. It identifies primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) as the one known inherited disorder in the breed and says a genetic test is available. The club recommends periodic evaluations by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist.

Reported conditions include eye disease, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, glaucoma, retinal folds, persistent pupillary membranes, epilepsy, and patellar luxation. The club says these conditions are not common, but the available sources do not establish population prevalence rates. The AKC also mentions breeder screening for concerns including neck pain syndrome, hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and cardiac and eye anomalies.

When speaking with a breeder, ask what health evaluations have been completed for the puppy’s parents and what the puppy’s POAG status is. Discuss relevant eye, heart, thyroid, hip, elbow, and patella evaluations, and maintain a relationship with the breeder. Your veterinarian can advise on appropriate ongoing care.

How long do PBGVs live?

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America’s FAQ gives an expected average lifespan of 12–14 years. That is the club’s general estimate, not a promise about any individual dog. The answer was dated November 9, 2022.

Is a PBGV the right dog for you?

A PBGV may be a good fit if you want a friendly, active companion and can make room for exercise, training, company, regular coat care, and a hound’s vocal and scent-following habits. Think carefully if your priorities are a quiet dog, minimal grooming, or reliable off-leash freedom. Breed tendencies are a starting point; meet individual dogs and discuss their needs with a responsible breeder or rescue organization.
