10 Cat Breeds to Consider for a Family—and What Insurance Covers

There is no universal list of family-friendly cat breeds that pet insurers cover or exclude. Insurers set terms by policy, state, and individual cat; a breed name alone cannot tell you whether a particular condition will be covered. The ten breeds below are an editorial shortlist—not a ranked guarantee of temperament or insurability. Choose for your household’s routine and the individual cat, then check the insurer’s written terms for that cat before enrolling.

Which cat breeds are best for kids?

Breed profiles can help families identify traits to look for, but they are not promises about how an individual cat will behave. PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed guide, updated August 30, 2024, highlights five breeds for children. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describes additional breeds that may suit some households. The list below is not a measured ranking; meet the cat and consider its history and behavior around children.

Breed Profiled tendencies Family fit to consider
Ragdoll Docile and attention-seeking, according to PetMD. May appeal to families looking for a sociable companion, provided the individual cat is comfortable with the household’s activity.
Maine Coon Loving, gentle, and playful, according to PetMD. Consider whether your family can make time for play and give a large cat room to move.
American Shorthair Independent and playful, according to PetMD. May suit a busy household seeking a cat with both playfulness and some independence.
Siamese Social, energetic, attention-seeking, and vocal, according to PetMD. Consider whether your family welcomes an active, communicative cat and can provide regular interaction.
Birman Affectionate and playful, according to PetMD. May suit a family seeking an affectionate cat that enjoys play.
British Shorthair Calm and quiet, according to CFA. May be worth meeting if a quieter presence fits your home; still observe how the individual cat responds to children.
Persian Sweet, affectionate, and quiet, according to CFA. Consider coat-care needs and whether your household can keep up with grooming.
Burmese People-oriented and affectionate, according to CFA. May suit a household that wants an engaged companion and can offer regular company.
Abyssinian Active and affectionate, according to CFA. Consider whether your family has the time and space for an energetic cat.
Siberian Large and powerful, according to CFA; the profile provides less child-specific guidance. Meet the individual cat and consider its size and energy in relation to children and your home.

PetMD advises watching a cat’s body language and teaching children respectful handling. CFA puts the central caveat plainly: “Not all cats look exactly the same, nor do they act the same.” Breed tendencies can help focus your search, but an individual cat’s observed temperament and known history matter more than its breed label.

Does pet insurance cover family-friendly cat breeds?

Coverage depends on the policy, not on whether a cat appears on a family-breed shortlist. The available insurer materials show different approaches: TICA’s Rainwalk information says breed-related, genetic, and congenital conditions may be eligible for reimbursement, subject to policy terms and pre-existing-condition rules; AKC Pet Insurance says certain hereditary conditions are not covered by its accident-and-illness plans. Nationwide’s hereditary-condition reference also cautions that exclusions depend on the policy and that the policy and declarations control.

  • WRITE-IN VET & EMERGENCY CONTACTS - A dry-erase section gives you space to record and update contact information for your veterinarian and local emergency animal hospital.
  • PET CPR INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BACK - Flip the magnet over for step-by-step CPR instructions for dogs and cats based on Red Cross guidelines.
  • LAMINATED, MAGNETIC & MADE IN THE USA - Durable 8.5 x 11-inch laminated chart includes four magnets on the back for refrigerator or metal-surface display, plus a pre-drilled hole for hanging.

These are examples of carrier-specific terms, not a universal rule or a complete breed-by-breed coverage list. “Hereditary,” “congenital,” and “pre-existing” describe different policy concepts. A condition may be treated differently from one plan to another, and its timing can affect eligibility. TICA describes a 14-day waiting period for its offering; it says conditions that occur or show symptoms before enrollment or during that waiting period are treated as pre-existing. That timing and waiting period are specific to TICA’s published information, not a standard for every insurer.

How to compare insurance for a specific cat

Get the sample policy and declarations for the plan and state you are considering. If you are adopting a kitten, buying from a breeder, or insuring an adult cat, ask about the actual cat’s age and any known symptoms or diagnoses. For a condition associated with a breed, ask the insurer in writing whether that named diagnosis—and related conditions—would be eligible under the policy.

  • Covered conditions: Check the definitions of covered accidents and illnesses, and the wording for hereditary, genetic, and congenital conditions.
  • Pre-existing conditions and timing: Read how the policy defines pre-existing conditions, whether it has a curable-condition provision, and how waiting periods affect symptoms or diagnoses.
  • Costs and reimbursement: Compare the deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual maximum. TICA describes customizable options for these terms for its offering; other plans may differ.
  • Fees and routine care: Check whether exam fees are covered or optional and whether wellness or routine-care add-ons are available. AKC describes optional exam-fee coverage for its plans.
  • Eligibility and exclusions: Confirm age eligibility and availability in your state, then check the exclusions in the sample policy and declarations—not just the summary page.

Ask for a written answer tied to the policy you would buy. A general statement about a breed or condition is not a substitute for the plan’s actual wording.

Do cat breeds affect insurance premiums?

They may factor into pricing, but the evidence here is industry context rather than a current quote. A 2019 National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) white paper says insurers commonly use breed-rating categories and that the highest-rated cat breed group could cost 0–50% more than the lowest-rated group. The paper describes broad historical pricing patterns; that range is not an estimate for a particular cat, insurer, location, or current policy. Get location-specific quotes to compare the cost of insuring the cat you are considering.
