Neither a Pets at Home-associated practice nor an independent vet is automatically the better choice. Compare the specific practices available to you: whether their team and services suit your pet, how easy it is to get care, what comparable treatment costs, and where your pet would go out of hours. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) says all types of practice can provide excellent care, so ownership is a starting point for questions—not a quality rating.
This guide is for UK pet owners choosing between local practices. The right choice depends on your animal’s needs and the actual arrangements each practice can offer.

What does “independent” mean, and does ownership tell you how good a vet is?
The RCVS describes independent practices in terms of ownership. Veterinary practices can have different ownership structures, but the category alone does not establish clinical quality, price, or suitability for a particular animal. The RCVS puts it plainly: “All types of practice can provide excellent care.” Read its guidance on choosing a veterinary practice.
“Pets at Home vet” can be used loosely to mean a veterinary practice associated with a Pets at Home location. Do not assume the retailer’s name tells you who owns or operates the veterinary practice. Ask the practice directly if ownership matters to your decision or is unclear on its website. Then assess the veterinary service itself: who treats your pet, what the practice can do, and how it handles care it cannot provide on site.

In short, the useful comparison is not a brand against a category. It is one identifiable local practice against another.
Compare the practices on the things your pet will actually need
Start with the needs of your own animal, including its species, age, health conditions, and any treatment or monitoring it may need. The RCVS says suitability depends in part on the species a practice treats and the services it provides. The UK Government’s guidance also notes that owners may prefer a practice with more facilities on site, more staff, or longer hours. Those features matter when they are relevant to your pet; they are not a universal measure of quality.
| What to compare | Questions for each practice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical fit | Do you treat my pet’s species? Can you provide the routine, diagnostic, or treatment services my pet may need? Who would I see? | A practice should be suitable for the animal and the care in question, not just convenient for the owner. |
| Team and continuity | What qualifications or relevant experience does the team have? Can I usually book with a familiar vet or team if continuity is important? | Relevant skills and a workable ongoing relationship can matter, particularly when a pet has a continuing health need. |
| Facilities and referral | What can you do on site? If you cannot provide a service, where do you refer? How is the handover arranged? | Some services may require facilities or expertise the local practice does not have. Know the route to that care. |
| Access | What are your normal opening hours? How are appointments booked? How long does it take to travel there? | Distance, hours, and appointment access affect how practical it is to use a practice when your pet needs attention. |
| Costs | What are your prices for the same services, what is included, and what additional charges might apply? | A like-for-like comparison helps you understand the likely bill; a single low headline price does not establish better value. |
| Out-of-hours care | Who provides it, where are they, how do I contact them, and how is clinical information handed over? | You need a clear route to help when the regular practice is closed. |
Ask both practices the same questions and note the answers. If a practice cannot provide a needed service, the relevant comparison is not simply “yes” versus “no”: find out where the care is available and how referral works. The RCVS and government guidance both identify services, facilities, opening hours, and out-of-hours arrangements as considerations in choosing a practice.
Is a Pets at Home-associated vet a good vet?
It can be, just as an independent practice can be. The name or location does not answer the questions that matter clinically. Look for the qualifications and relevant experience of the veterinary team, whether the practice treats your species, and whether it can provide or arrange the care your pet may need. A practice in a shop may be convenient, but convenience should be weighed alongside appointment access, facilities, referral arrangements and emergency cover.
Ask who actually provides the veterinary service and who owns the practice if that is unclear. Ownership can affect how a practice is organised, but it is not a substitute for checking the service you would receive. The RCVS’s position is that all types of practice can provide excellent care, so a fair decision requires comparing the specific local teams rather than assuming a group-wide standard.
How to make a fair local price comparison
There is no reliable national rule that Pets at Home-associated practices cost more or less than independent vets. Prices for the same treatment can differ between practices, and the RCVS cautions that a lower price does not necessarily mean better value. Compare current written quotes from the practices you could actually use, rather than applying a broad assumption about either ownership type.
Request the same prices from both practices
Ask for the current price of each service relevant to your pet. Useful starting points are consultations, prescriptions, vaccinations, microchipping, and neutering or spaying. You do not need to compare every item if it is not relevant, but ask for the same service and circumstances from each practice.

- Make a short list of the services you expect to need, such as an initial consultation and your pet’s routine preventive care.
- Ask each practice for its current price in writing. If a price depends on the animal, appointment type, medication, or procedure, ask what information the practice needs to provide a comparable quote.
- Ask what the quote includes and whether there may be additional charges. For a prescription, for example, clarify what the quoted charge covers rather than assuming it includes the medicine.
- Ask about payment options and any charges that could apply if your pet needs additional investigations, treatment, or out-of-hours care.
- Compare the scope of the service as well as the amount. A lower figure is not directly comparable if the other quote includes different items or covers a different service.
The RCVS and GOV.UK advise owners to consider local prices and what is included. Neither source establishes a standard price that applies across the country, so a written quote from the specific practice is more useful than a national average or anecdote.
Think about the likely total, not one headline fee
A consultation fee is only one possible part of veterinary spending. Depending on the situation, a pet may need a prescription, diagnostic work, a procedure, a referral, or care outside normal hours. Ask which costs can be estimated in advance and what the practice will do to explain options and prices if further care is recommended. This helps you compare how each practice communicates and supports decisions, not only its listed fees.
Pet insurance is one way owners may plan for veterinary costs, as the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) includes insurance in its consumer guidance on responsible pet ownership. That does not establish that a particular policy will cover a particular treatment. Check the policy wording and exclusions with the insurer; do not assume coverage when comparing practices.
Are independent vets cheaper?
Sometimes one local practice will be cheaper for a particular service, but ownership does not let you predict which one. Staffing, premises, equipment, medicines, opening hours and referral arrangements can all affect a quote. Compare the same service, for the same type of appointment and animal, and ask whether examination, medication, laboratory work or follow-up is included.

Check out-of-hours and emergency arrangements before you need them
Ask who provides care when the practice is closed. The arrangement may be provided by the practice itself or by another provider; establish which applies to the specific practice you are considering. GOV.UK states: “Vet practices should offer an out-of-hours service.” Its guidance, Choosing a vet practice and treatments for your pet, was updated on 25 September 2024.

- Who provides out-of-hours care, and is it the practice or a separate provider?
- Where is the service located, and how long might travel take?
- What number should you call, and what should you do if your usual practice is closed?
- How will the out-of-hours team access relevant information about your pet?
- What charges may apply, and how can you check them before treatment where circumstances allow?
Save the contact details somewhere accessible rather than relying on finding them during an emergency. If a third party provides the service, ask how the handover back to your regular practice works. The point is to understand the route to care before you need it, not to infer that one ownership model has a better emergency service.

A practice with more on-site facilities or staff may reduce the need to travel for some services. Another practice may refer certain work elsewhere but offer a location or team you prefer. Neither arrangement is automatically superior. Ask what happens in a typical referral: who makes it, where your pet goes, whether records and test results are transferred, and who remains responsible for follow-up.
Continuity is another individual priority. If your pet has a long-term condition, ask whether appointments can usually be booked with a familiar vet or team and how records are shared when someone else is covering. If rapid access matters more than seeing the same person, ask about appointment availability and the process for urgent cases. The RCVS specifically identifies distance and continuity as considerations, so include them in your comparison rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
What RCVS accreditation can—and cannot—tell you
The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is voluntary. A practice may be accredited, but you should not assume that every practice is, or that accreditation alone makes one practice a better fit for your pet. Check the specific practice’s status using the RCVS Find a Vet service or ask the practice directly. The RCVS’s practice-choice guidance explains the role of practice type and suitability.
Ask what any accreditation or award applies to and verify it rather than treating a logo or general claim as conclusive. Accreditation is one piece of information alongside the team, services, access, price, and care arrangements. It is not a substitute for asking whether the practice treats your species or can arrange the services your pet may need.

What the CMA decision means when you are choosing
The CMA’s final decision summary on the UK market for veterinary services for household pets identifies Pets at Home among large veterinary groups. It describes measures intended to make it easier for owners to compare practices, including information about out-of-hours care, qualifications, accreditations or awards, and prices for a standard list of services. It also discusses written policies intended to support independent, impartial advice about costs and, where appropriate, treatment options and prices. See the CMA’s summary of the final report.
These are matters described in the CMA’s decision; they do not establish that every local practice has already implemented every measure or that a particular website currently displays all of the information. Check the practice’s current disclosures and ask directly if something is missing. In particular, request the prices and emergency details you need instead of relying on an assumption that a national measure has made them readily comparable.

A practical way to choose between two local practices
1. Identify the practices you can realistically use
Find the actual veterinary practices associated with the local Pets at Home service and the independent practice you are considering. Confirm the practice names and locations; if the ownership of either is unclear, ask. Compare realistic travel times and opening hours for your household, not an abstract branch or ownership category.
2. Check that each is suitable for your pet
Confirm the practice treats your animal’s species and ask about relevant services, facilities, team qualifications or experience, and referral arrangements. If your pet has an ongoing condition or needs a particular type of care, say so when you ask. A general answer about the practice may not establish that the specific service is available for your animal.
3. Compare costs and access using the same questions
Get written, current prices for the same relevant services. Clarify what each price includes, possible additional charges, payment options, and out-of-hours fees. Compare appointment booking, normal hours, distance, and whether seeing a familiar team is possible if that matters to you.
4. Write down the emergency route and make a decision
Record the out-of-hours provider, location, phone number, and handover arrangement for each practice. Then weigh the factors that matter most for your pet. One owner may reasonably prioritize proximity and continuity; another may prioritize on-site facilities or a service relevant to a pet’s needs. The best choice is the practice that offers a suitable combination of care, access, transparency, and cost for your circumstances.

Put both practice names at the top of a page or note. Create rows for species treated, relevant services, team qualifications or experience, normal hours, booking method, travel time, referral destination, out-of-hours provider and phone number, consultation price, prescription charge, vaccination, microchipping, neutering or spaying, payment options, and RCVS PSS status. Add a final row for anything important to your pet, such as ongoing monitoring.
Fill in the answers from the same date and mark anything the practice could not confirm. This prevents a polished website, an old price list or a convenient location from carrying more weight than the actual service. Keep the worksheet so you can update prices and emergency details later; veterinary arrangements and fees can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Pets at Home vet better than an independent vet?
There is no universal winner. The RCVS says all types of practice can provide excellent care. Compare the actual local teams, services, facilities, access, prices and emergency arrangements.
Are independent vets cheaper?
Not necessarily. Prices vary between local practices and by what a service includes. Request current, written, like-for-like prices for consultations, prescriptions, vaccinations, microchipping and neutering or spaying, then ask about additional and out-of-hours charges.

What should I ask before registering with a new vet?
Ask whether the practice treats your species, which services and facilities are available, who provides routine and emergency care, normal opening hours, referral arrangements, comparable prices, payment options, continuity with a familiar team, and current RCVS Practice Standards Scheme status.
Who provides emergency care outside normal hours?
The practice should tell you whether it provides out-of-hours care itself or uses another provider, where that service is located, which number to call, what it may cost and how information is handed back to your regular practice. Save these details before an emergency.
Does RCVS accreditation guarantee the best practice for my pet?
No. The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme is voluntary, and accreditation is only one factor. Verify the specific practice’s status and also assess species expertise, services, access, cost and referral arrangements.
Does Pets at Home own every vet practice in one of its stores?
Do not assume that from the name or location. Ask the specific practice who owns or operates it if that matters to you, then judge the veterinary service itself.
