In November 2024, wildlife photographer Yves Adams photographed an unusually dark king penguin at St Andrews Bay, South Georgia. News reports attribute its plumage to melanism, but no genetic testing of this bird has been reported. Adams’s remark that he did not believe anyone had seen such a penguin before is his impression—not confirmation that this is the first all-black penguin ever observed.
What happened at St Andrews Bay?
Adams was leading an expedition as a tour guide when a fellow photographer pointed out the bird. He photographed it coming ashore, before it blended into a colony described in the reports as numbering hundreds of thousands. The figure refers to the reported scale of the colony, not a population census of South Georgia. PetaPixel covered the encounter on November 19, 2024; IFLScience identifies the species as a king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and says the sighting came early in the South Georgia season.
The bird appeared almost entirely black, without the familiar pale belly and yellow patches of a typical king penguin. Adams also described subtle color visible at close range: “From a distance the black is super black but when you get closer some of the markings on its neck and belly are like a metallic green.” IFLScience attributes that observation to Adams.
Is this penguin a confirmed genetic mutation?
Melanism is a term for unusually dark coloration associated with excess melanin. PetaPixel and IFLScience report the bird as melanistic, but their accounts do not describe genetic testing or establish the precise biological mechanism in this individual. “Mutation” in the headline is therefore a shorthand, not a diagnosis confirmed by laboratory analysis.

Appearance alone may not reveal the underlying cause of an unusual plumage pattern. A 2023 peer-reviewed note on color aberrations in erect-crested penguins on Antipodes Island says the causes had not been analyzed and calls for genetic study and long-term monitoring. That paper concerns a different species; it provides context for the limits of diagnosing cause from photographs, not evidence about Adams’s king penguin. The note in Notornis discusses those limits.
How rare is an all-black penguin?
There is no well-established frequency for fully melanistic king penguins in the cited coverage. IFLScience gives an estimate of one in 250,000 for partial melanism in penguins, while noting the lack of documentation and scientific study of all-black penguins. That estimate should not be read as a measured rate for this bird’s all-black appearance or for king penguins specifically. IFLScience reports the estimate with those broader qualifications.

Rates sometimes cited for other unusual penguin colors describe a different condition. National Geographic reports historical rates attributed to a 2000 study: leucistic traits in one in 20,000 gentoo penguins, one in 114,000 Adélie penguins, and one in 146,000 chinstrap penguins. Those figures concern leucism in other species, not melanism or all-black king penguins. National Geographic describes the separate pale Adélie penguin story.
Melanism, leucism and albinism are not interchangeable
Melanism describes unusually dark coloration. Leucism involves reduced or absent pigmentation in some feathers or other areas, while albinism is a distinct pigment condition. They should not be treated as different names for the same color anomaly.

In National Geographic’s report on a pale Adélie penguin, University of Washington penguin expert P. Dee Boersma called that separate bird “an isabelline, or leucistic, penguin” and explained the distinction from albinism. Her statement was about the pale Adélie, not a diagnosis of Adams’s black king penguin.

Typical penguin countershading can help camouflage a bird in water: its dark back may blend with dark water when viewed from above, while its pale belly may blend with the bright surface when viewed from below. An unusually dark underside could reduce that contrast-based camouflage. The available reports do not establish whether this individual faced a specific predator, suffered a survival disadvantage, or had a shorter lifespan.

Adams said the penguin was accepted by other birds and did not appear unusually sized. That is his observation during the encounter, not the result of long-term behavioral research.
Was this the first all-black penguin anyone had seen?
That has not been established. PetaPixel quotes Adams saying, “I don’t believe anyone has seen this all-black penguin before.” The wording conveys his reaction to an exceptionally striking bird; it does not prove a worldwide first or rule out earlier undocumented observations. Reports describe the bird as extraordinarily rare, but do not provide a complete record of all penguin sightings or a verified first-observation claim.
