Some dogs are large because they are tall and athletic; others are built like four-legged tanks. The breeds below cover both types, from the towering Irish Wolfhound to the heavily boned Mastiff. They share histories of demanding work and breed descriptions that often emphasize calm, patient, or affectionate behavior, but an individual dog’s temperament also depends on genetics, socialization, training, health, and handling.
“Biggest” has no single official definition. The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest AKC-recognized breed, while Mastiffs and Saint Bernards can be heavier. Size varies between individuals, so the figures below are typical ranges or breed-standard measurements, not guarantees.
How these breeds compare

1. Mastiff
The Mastiff is the heavyweight of this group. Males weigh about 160–230 pounds and females about 120–170 pounds. Males must stand at least 30 inches at the shoulder; the breed standard sets no maximum height. The Mastiff is massive and heavy-boned, with prodigious strength.
Despite its imposing build and history as a guardian, the Mastiff is described as docile, dignified, patient, and lovable, while also protective of its family. A settled adult may be content to watch over the household rather than constantly seek activity. That protective instinct still matters: a dog weighing well over 100 pounds needs early socialization and training so it does not develop unsafe habits.

2. Saint Bernard
Saint Bernards combine exceptional size with a history of practical service. Males typically weigh 140–180 pounds and stand 28–30 inches tall; females usually weigh 120–140 pounds and stand 26–28 inches.
At the Saint Bernard Pass, these dogs performed guarding, drafting, and mountain rescue work. Today, the breed is described as watchful and patient, with a particular fondness for children. Their strength is easy to underestimate beneath the friendly expression: a playful adolescent can knock over a small child or adult without meaning to.
Training should focus on four feet on the floor, loose-leash walking, and polite behavior around food, guests, and other animals. Their coat, drool, and substantial space requirements are also part of the ownership package.

3. Irish Wolfhound
If height is your definition of “biggest,” the Irish Wolfhound leads the list. Males must reach at least 32 inches at the shoulder and weigh about 120 pounds; females must be at least 30 inches and weigh about 105 pounds.
This is a tall, athletic hound rather than a compact, extremely heavy dog. Irish Wolfhounds were developed to hunt large game and were capable of confronting wolves, so their gentle reputation should not obscure their physical capability. The breed is commonly characterized as calm, dignified, kindly, serene, and agreeable.
They need room to move and safe opportunities for exercise, especially while young. Training must account for a sighthound’s independence and potential prey drive. A secure fence is important, as is avoiding excessive impact while a young Wolfhound’s large frame is still developing.

4. Leonberger
The Leonberger is a powerful, long-coated working dog. Males stand 28–31.5 inches and weigh roughly 110–170 pounds; females stand 25.5–29.5 inches and weigh 90–140 pounds.

Leonbergers are versatile working dogs that can take part in drafting, carting, hiking, and other physical activities. Their breed description emphasizes a friendly, playful, gentle, serene, and patient nature. Many are affectionate family dogs that enjoy being involved in household life.
Do not confuse the calmness of a mature Leonberger with an easy puppy. Young dogs can be energetic and hard to physically control. Early classes, consistent household rules, and reward-based training are especially valuable before an exuberant adolescent becomes a very large dog.
5. Newfoundland
Newfoundlands are muscular water-working dogs with the strength to haul and retrieve. Adult males average about 28 inches and 130–150 pounds; females average about 26 inches and 100–120 pounds.
The Newfoundland standard describes the breed as sweet-dispositioned, devoted, strong, muscular, and capable of draft work. Its history includes hauling, retrieving, lifesaving, and other tasks on land and in water. A well-socialized Newfoundland may be patient and watchful around children, but no dog should be treated as a guaranteed “nanny.”

Access to shade, cool water, and a well-ventilated living area is essential. Training should begin early because even a friendly Newfoundland can pull strongly or bowl someone over.
6. Great Dane
Great Danes are among the tallest and most recognizable dogs. Males generally stand 30–32 inches and weigh 140–175 pounds; females are around 28–30 inches and 110–140 pounds.

The breed was developed in Germany as a boar-hunting dog, and its elegant outline can disguise considerable strength. AKC descriptions emphasize a friendly, patient, dependable, easygoing, and gentle temperament, along with courage.
For a Great Dane, obedience is a safety measure. A dog this tall can put its paws on a person’s shoulders, reach kitchen counters, or injure someone by jumping. Teach calm greetings, reliable responses to basic cues, and controlled leash walking. Young Danes also need carefully managed exercise while their joints and skeleton mature.
7. Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees is a large livestock guardian: males generally stand 27–32 inches and females 25–29 inches. Weight should be proportional to the individual’s structure; a 27-inch male weighs about 100 pounds, while a 25-inch female weighs about 85 pounds.
These dogs were developed to protect livestock from wolves and other predators in mountainous country. That work demanded power, stamina, confidence, and independent decision-making. At home, a well-adjusted Great Pyrenees can be a mellow companion, but it remains a vigilant guardian.
This breed may bark at night, patrol boundaries, and question unfamiliar people rather than greet everyone warmly. Secure fencing and early, controlled socialization are important. “Gentle” describes the desired temperament; it does not mean passive, universally sociable, or silent.
8. Bernese Mountain Dog
Bernese Mountain Dogs are smaller than most dogs on this list, but they remain large, strong working animals. Males are typically 25–27.5 inches and 80–115 pounds; females are about 23–26 inches and 70–95 pounds.
Swiss farmers used Berners to pull milk carts and wagons, herd cattle, and handle general farm work. Their strength is paired with a reputation for being sweet, calm, affectionate, placid, and eager to please. They often form close bonds with their families.

- 【Bonus Dog Leash】: A free 5ft dog leash is included. Featured with comfortable foam handle, strong climbing rope, and tangle-free hook
A Berner’s manageable appearance can lead owners to postpone training. That is a mistake: a dog weighing up to 115 pounds that pulls toward another dog or jumps on guests is still difficult to handle. Begin leash manners, handling practice, and polite greetings early. Their thick coat also requires regular grooming and careful attention during warm weather.
9. Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is shorter and more compact than the Mastiff but exceptionally powerful. It can stand up to 27 inches and weigh approximately 100–130 pounds.
Developed to pursue and hold poachers, the Bullmastiff combines Mastiff power with Bulldog athleticism. In a home setting, the breed is often docile, biddable, reliable, and devoted to its family. It is not, however, a passive stuffed animal. Its guarding background can influence how it responds to strangers and unfamiliar situations.
Use calm, consistent boundaries and reward-based training. Socialize puppies with different people, places, sounds, and well-mannered dogs without forcing interactions. Owners must be able to control the dog physically and manage doors, visitors, and public walks responsibly.

The Scottish Deerhound is a tall, rough-coated sighthound built for speed and stamina. Males commonly stand 30–32 inches and weigh 85–110 pounds; females weigh about 75–95 pounds.
Its history is one of demanding pursuit: the breed was developed to hunt giant red deer across rough terrain. That required bone, muscle, courage, and endurance. Within the family, the Deerhound is generally described as courageous, dignified, gentle, and friendly.
Its exercise needs differ from those of a heavy Mastiff. Deerhounds need safe chances to stretch out and run, and their prey drive means an unsecured yard or open field can be risky. Reliable fencing and thoughtful off-leash management are more important than expecting this athletic hound to be satisfied with short walks.

What to know before choosing a gentle giant
Temperament is not a safety guarantee
Breed tendencies are useful for narrowing a choice, but individual behavior depends on genetics, early experiences, socialization, training, health, and handling. Always supervise interactions between a dog and young children, regardless of breed. Children should not climb on, hug, disturb, or take food from a resting dog.
Training must start before the dog is huge
- Teach name recognition, recall, sit, and a release cue with rewards.
- Practice loose-leash walking before the puppy has adult pulling strength.
- Reward calm behavior when guests arrive instead of waiting for jumping to become a problem.
- Introduce grooming, nail care, veterinary handling, crates, vehicles, and household noises gradually.
- Use secure gates and fencing while recall and impulse control are developing.
Daily care can be demanding
Giant breeds need appropriately managed exercise, plenty of food, durable equipment, and space to rest without being disturbed. Long coats may mean daily brushing and significant shedding; drool is common in several mastiff-type breeds. Ask a veterinarian about growth, nutrition, joint health, weight control, and exercise limits for a rapidly growing puppy. Keeping a giant dog lean is one of the most practical things an owner can do for long-term mobility.
FAQ
What is the biggest gentle dog breed?
There is no single answer because height and weight are measured differently. The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest AKC-recognized breed, while Mastiffs are generally heavier and more heavily boned. Saint Bernards can also reach exceptional weights.
Are giant dog breeds safe around children?
A well-socialized dog with a suitable temperament may be a wonderful family companion, but no breed guarantees safety. Giant dogs can accidentally knock over children, and every interaction with young children should be actively supervised.
Recommended Free Tools
Which large dog is the calmest?
Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and mature Leonbergers are often known for calm temperaments. Individual dogs vary, and calmness does not remove the need for training or responsible management.
Do gentle giant dogs need a lot of exercise?
It depends on the breed. Mastiffs may need less intense exercise than Irish Wolfhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, or young Leonbergers. All need regular movement, but growing giant-breed puppies should avoid forced or high-impact exercise.
The Bottom Line
These breeds show that great strength and a soft temperament can coexist. The Mastiff and Saint Bernard bring exceptional mass, the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane bring height, and the Newfoundland, Leonberger, Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, Bullmastiff, and Scottish Deerhound add their own forms of working ability and family companionship. Choose based on the individual breed’s guarding instincts, exercise needs, grooming, size, and trainability—not on the label “gentle” alone.
