If your cat has swallowed plastic, contact a veterinarian promptly for advice; seek urgent care if your cat is vomiting, not eating, lethargic, or showing abdominal pain. Chewing a wrapper does not by itself mean your cat has pica: pica is persistent ingestion of non-food items, and repeated behavior warrants veterinary assessment to investigate possible medical and behavioral causes.
Chewing plastic is not always pica—but swallowing it is a concern
Cats may investigate objects with their mouths. Briefly biting or chewing a wrapper does not establish pica. Concern is greater when a cat repeatedly swallows plastic or other non-food materials, seeks them out, or has recurring oral behaviors such as sucking, licking, or chewing.
One episode of chewing is not enough to diagnose pica. Any suspected ingestion deserves a call to your veterinarian, and recurring ingestion should be discussed with them. Do not assume the behavior is caused by boredom or a dietary deficiency.
Why does my cat chew or eat plastic?
There is no single explanation that fits every cat. Pica can have medical or behavioral causes, and a veterinarian needs the cat’s history and examination to assess them. Possibilities include gastrointestinal disease, anemia, anxiety, compulsive disorders, malnutrition or an imbalanced diet, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and brain conditions. These are possibilities to investigate, not diagnoses that can be made from the behavior alone.

Some cats show repetitive oral behaviors such as sucking, licking, chewing, or ingesting non-food substances. A veterinarian can help determine whether a recurring behavior is pica and whether further medical or behavioral evaluation is appropriate.
Why swallowing plastic can be dangerous
Plastic and other non-digestible objects can lodge in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines and cause an obstruction. Sharp material may injure or perforate the intestine, and repeated chewing of abnormal objects can damage teeth. Do not assume a small piece will pass safely: risk depends on the object and the cat.
Possible foreign-body signs include vomiting or diarrhea, reduced appetite, abdominal pain or tenderness, straining to defecate or passing little stool, lethargy, and changes in behavior such as hiding or reacting painfully when handled. These signs can have other causes, but after a suspected ingestion they warrant prompt veterinary assessment.

What should I do if my cat ate plastic?
- Remove any remaining plastic from your cat’s reach.
- Note what may have been swallowed, approximately how much, and when, if known. Keep a matching piece or packaging to show the veterinarian if available.
- Contact your veterinarian promptly for advice after a suspected ingestion, even if your cat currently seems well. Go to an emergency veterinarian for concerning signs such as repeated vomiting, marked lethargy, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite.
- Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
- If string or thread is visible from your cat’s mouth, do not pull it. Contact a veterinarian; a linear object may be anchored internally, and pulling can cause injury.
A veterinarian may recommend monitoring in selected cases, but home observation is not a universal plan. Suspected obstruction may require prompt diagnostics and treatment.

The veterinarian will take a history and examine your cat. Be ready to describe what your cat targets, whether it chews or swallows it, how often the behavior occurs, and any changes in appetite, stool, or behavior. Share what may have been swallowed and when.
Depending on the case, evaluation may include X-rays, contrast imaging, ultrasound, laboratory tests, or fecal testing. Further gastrointestinal investigation or referral to a veterinary behaviorist may be considered after medical causes have been assessed.

How pica in cats is treated
Treatment depends on what the cat swallowed and the cause of the behavior. A foreign-body obstruction may require surgery; in selected cases, a veterinarian may hospitalize and monitor a cat while tracking an object’s movement. Medical causes need treatment directed at the underlying condition.
If a veterinarian determines the behavior is behavioral, management may include restricting access to the targeted items, enrichment, and positive reinforcement. Feeding toys, prey-like toys, scratching posts, and places to hide may be useful options. Avoid punishment, which can increase anxiety and potentially worsen the behavior.

How to prevent your cat from eating plastic
- Put plastic bags, wrappers, and packaging away after use.
- Keep waste and recycling inaccessible to your cat.
- Store string, thread, ribbon, and similar materials in closed containers.
- Remove objects your cat repeatedly targets and supervise new toys or feeding items.
- Provide appropriate play, places to hide, and safe opportunities to forage, as advised by your veterinarian.
Preventing access can reduce the chance of another ingestion, but it does not explain why the behavior began or replace veterinary assessment.

Can enrichment help a cat that eats plastic?
Enrichment can offer safer opportunities for play and foraging, but it does not diagnose or treat an obstruction or an underlying medical condition. A cat puzzle feeder is one optional feeding toy to discuss after immediate medical concerns have been addressed.
Introduce a feeding toy under supervision and stop using it if your cat chews pieces off or tries to swallow it. Keep plastic and other dangerous objects out of reach regardless of whether enrichment is helping.
