Two sellers publish useful details shoppers can compare, but their safety and testing statements are company claims—not independent proof that a treat is pathogen-free. Before buying any pig ear, check its source, processing information, lot traceability, ingredients, size and feeding directions, then follow FDA’s hygiene precautions.
What to compare before buying pig ears for dogs
Use the same checks for every product. They help you assess what a seller discloses; none guarantees a treat is free of pathogens or suitable for every dog.

- Source and origin: Look for the country where the ears were raised or sourced and where they were processed. If those details are unclear, ask the seller.
- Processing and testing: Check whether the company explains its processing and pathogen-control steps. Distinguish a statement that a product is tested from access to a report showing what was tested and when.
- Traceability: Choose packaging with a lot or batch code and retain it until the treat is used. Avoid bulk-bin treats if you cannot identify the specific product lot.
- Shape and size: Compare a whole ear or sliver with your dog’s size and chewing habits. Supervise chewing and remove fragments that could be swallowed.
- Ingredients and feeding directions: Read the full ingredient list and follow the package’s serving, calorie and supervision instructions. A single-ingredient label does not establish pathogen safety.
These checks align with FDA’s advice that sourcing, processing, handling and preventing contamination after processing all matter. Vetstreet’s general guide to safe dog chews also recommends considering size, hardness, digestibility, sourcing and ingredient simplicity; it is general chew guidance, not pig-ear-specific evidence. What FDA’s pig-ear safety history means for shoppers
FDA investigated a 2019 Salmonella outbreak linked to pig-ear pet treats and describes recalls and import scrutiny in its outbreak materials. On October 30, 2019, the agency changed its consumer advice: it no longer advised people categorically to avoid all pig-ear treats, but advised precautions for people who choose to feed them. The history is a reason to check product and lot information—not evidence that every current pig ear is contaminated. FDA’s outbreak investigation and consumer advice

- SUPPORTS DENTAL HEALTH: Durable texture helps remove plaque and tartar as dogs chew

A later recall was limited to one lot
On April 2, 2025, FDA posted a notice for one lot of Supercan Pig Ear Slivers: 500-piece, 15.9-ounce bags with an expiration date of 11/09/2026. A sample tested positive for Salmonella. That notice concerns the specified lot; it does not say all Supercan products or all pig ears were recalled. If you have the product, compare its lot and package details with the FDA recall notice and follow its directions.
How to handle a pig-ear treat
FDA’s consumer guidance for people who choose to feed pig-ear treats is to supervise the dog, pick up the treat when the dog is done, keep treats away from small children, clean areas the treat or pet contacted, wash hands, and prevent the dog from licking people or household surfaces after contact. These precautions matter because contamination can affect people as well as pets. Read FDA’s pig-ear Q&As.
