Plastic Pollution: Could Insects Be the Solution? What the Research Shows

Some insect larvae consume particular plastics in laboratory studies, but eating or altering plastic is not proof of complete, safe degradation or a solution for mixed waste.

Not yet. Some insect larvae have consumed and chemically altered particular plastics in laboratory studies, but that is not the same as safely processing mixed plastic waste. Researchers are investigating the insects’ gut microbes and enzymes; current evidence does not establish an insect-based cleanup method that works at practical scale.

Can insects really eat plastic?

Some can consume certain plastics under controlled experimental conditions. A 2024 study fed yellow mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor) aged and pristine polyethylene (PE) film and polystyrene (PS) foam microplastics for 35 days. The researchers reported consumption of both materials and analytical evidence of depolymerization. They also reported that aged plastics depolymerized more efficiently than pristine plastics, while larvae fed aged microplastics showed inhibited growth associated with the limited nutrient supply.

Those results apply to the tested larvae, polymers, and laboratory feeding conditions. They do not show that mealworms can treat mixed household or municipal plastic waste. The study is available through its PubMed record.

What does it mean for an insect to “degrade” plastic?

The word “degrade” can hide several different outcomes. In a plastic experiment, it matters whether researchers show that larvae ate the material, that it broke into smaller pieces, or that its polymer chains changed chemically. None of those observations, by itself, proves that all of the plastic was converted into harmless substances.

60 Piece Mini Insect Toys with Gift Box, Realistic Plastic Bug Figures
  • Bug toy set: 60 pieces of lifelike small fake bugs, including 12 kinds of figurines: scorpions, cicadas, ladybugs, bees, crickets, mantises, etc. This is a wonderful gift for kids to explore insects and get out into nature
  • Easy store: Realistic detailed plastic bugs have a round, clear bucket that is round and does not hurt toddlers's hands. The bucket comes with a strong hand rope to make this unique false bug easy to store and carry outside
  • Educational value: These were great for school projects, sensory bins, and dioramas for science class. Develop an interest in the insect world, dispel fear of insects, enhance toddlers's concentration and outsight, and foster a love of science
  • Safe play: The mini insect toy is made of high-quality plastic material with a soft texture, non-toxic paint, bright colors, and is lifelike. Measuring about 2 to 2.5 inches, which are suitable for toddlers 3 years old and up to use and play with
  • Unique Gift: It's an awesome theme birthday party favors or prize for toddlers, decorating the room, courtyard and garden. Halloween Christmas stocking stuffers, decoration of cupcake toppers, sensory bin filler, and school classroom project rewards supplies, the best collection for insect lovers
  • Consumed: larvae ingested plastic. This says where the material went initially, not what ultimately happened to it.
  • Fragmented: plastic broke into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces are still plastic.
  • Depolymerized: evidence indicates that polymer chains changed or broke down. The mealworm study reported analytical signs of this change.
  • Biodegraded: biological processes transformed material. This term should not be taken to mean complete mineralization—the conversion of plastic into simple end products—or to imply that no plastic residues remain.

To establish what happened to all the material, studies need appropriate chemical measurements and residue accounting, not just evidence that larvae fed or that plastic mass fell. Reviews describe the mechanisms as incompletely understood. See the 2024 review in Process Safety and Environmental Protection and the review of insect larvae and their microbiota.

Which insects and plastics have researchers studied?

Research has examined mealworms, superworms (Zophobas atratus), and greater wax moth larvae (Galleria mellonella), among other insect-associated research topics. The 2024 mealworm experiment focused on PE film and PS foam microplastics. Findings for one insect and polymer combination should not be generalized to every insect species, plastic type, or waste stream.

Researchers are also studying microorganisms associated with insect guts and enzymes that may contribute to plastic transformation. These are promising subjects for mechanistic research, and isolated microbes or enzymes may point to future biotechnological approaches. That possibility is not evidence of a deployed treatment process.

Could insect larvae clean up plastic pollution at scale?

Current evidence does not support treating larvae as a practical cleanup technology. A 2024 review states: “Polymer degradation by insects currently has no practical applicability.” The review also says the process is not yet fully understood. Scale-up, consistent measurement methods, and management of residues remain important challenges identified in review literature.

Before an insect-based process could be considered useful for waste treatment, it would need to show what happens to the plastic and any byproducts, whether the process can be standardized and scaled, and what effects the material has on larval health. Consumption in a laboratory feeding study does not answer those operational questions.

What does this research mean for the plastic-pollution problem?

The research identifies a possible biological route worth investigating, especially through the microbes and enzymes associated with insects. It does not show that insects have solved plastic pollution or can replace waste collection and treatment. One figure cited as background in the 2024 mealworm study says that more than 287 million tons of plastic are disposed of in landfills, rivers, and oceans or burned each year; that is contextual information in the study abstract, not a quantity measured by the mealworm experiment.

The useful distinction is between a scientific lead and a ready-to-use solution: some larvae consume specific plastics in controlled studies, and researchers report chemical changes in those materials. Whether that can become a safe, reliable way to handle real-world plastic waste has not been established.
