Ladakh is home to an estimated 477 snow leopards—more than any other Indian state or union territory in India’s first national assessment. That figure describes a survey-based estimate for 2019–2023, not a live headcount or a promise that visitors will spot one. Here’s what the number means, where snow leopards live in Ladakh, and what travelers should know about viewing them responsibly.
How many snow leopards are there in Ladakh?
India’s first Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) estimated 477 snow leopards in Ladakh and 718 across the country. The government released the assessment on 30 January 2024, based on fieldwork conducted from 2019 to 2023. Ladakh’s figure is a regional estimate from that assessment—not a count of animals in one park, a current census, or the number likely to be seen on a trip. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s release reports the estimates and survey methods.
How the assessment was made
SPAI first used occupancy-based assessment to map where snow leopards occur, then estimated abundance using camera traps in stratified regions. The government reports 13,450 km of sign-survey trails, cameras at 1,971 locations, 180,000 trap nights, and 241 distinct photographed animals. Those 241 photographs represent distinct individuals identified in camera-trap data; they are not the total population estimate. The assessment also identified 120,000 km² of high-altitude habitat in India, more than 70% of the country’s potential snow leopard range. These survey measures provide context for the estimate, but they do not turn it into an exact tally of every animal.
Where can you see a snow leopard in Ladakh?
Snow leopards inhabit remote, high-altitude terrain, and being in their range does not make a sighting certain. Hemis National Park is a recognized Ladakh location associated with the species. The official Hemis National Park profile also lists bharal, Asiatic ibex, Tibetan wolf, and high-altitude birds among its wildlife.

Ladakh’s protected areas include Hemis High Altitude National Park, Changthang (High Altitude Cold Desert) Wildlife Sanctuary, and Karakoram (Nubra–Shayok) Wildlife Sanctuary. Their existence does not mean every area is accessible to visitors or open to wildlife tours; access and local conditions need to be checked with the relevant authorities. The Ladakh Forest Department describes its protected-area and wildlife work.
When is snow leopard season in Ladakh?
The Directorate of Tourism, Ladakh’s wildlife listing identifies October–March as the snow leopard viewing season. Treat this as a broad seasonal indication, not a guarantee of sightings or a substitute for checking current access, weather, and local guidance. The official tourism listing is the reference for that season window.

Snow leopards are elusive, and a population estimate cannot predict whether an individual traveler will see one. Plan for the landscape and the wider wildlife experience, not a guaranteed encounter. On 6 August 2026, the Ladakh administration announced plans for guided high-altitude wildlife jeep safaris and directed officials to explore possible routes. The announcement describes intended participation by local drivers and guides, specially designed open-back vehicles, and aims that include wildlife protection and reducing illegal off-roading. It is a plan, not confirmation that a particular tour, route, vehicle, or booking system is operating.

Snow leopard conservation in Ladakh is closely tied to the lives of people who keep livestock in high-altitude landscapes. The Snow Leopard Trust identifies reduced natural prey and retaliatory killing after livestock losses among threats in its India program description. Measures it lists include livestock insurance, grazing set-asides, corral improvements, research, and conservation education. These are stated programs and approaches, not proof that conflict has been eliminated or that any single intervention has ensured population growth. The Snow Leopard Trust’s India page outlines its work and the threats it addresses.

Because the announced safari plans do not yet establish confirmed operators or itineraries, compare the practical details of any trip only after checking that it is currently authorized. Useful questions include:
- Is the experience formally authorized, and does it follow local wildlife guidance?
- How directly does visitor spending support local guides and communities?
- Do transport and group practices limit off-roading, noise, crowding, and disturbance?
- Does the accommodation offer suitable support for a high-altitude winter trip and acclimatization?
- What are the cancellation terms if weather, access, or wildlife conditions change?
These checks matter because a responsible trip should account for both visitor safety and the wildlife and communities it encounters. No reviewed announcement establishes a particular operator’s practices or booking terms.
