Keep medicines, cleaners, pest baits and automotive products secured; check species-specific risks with a veterinarian; and contact a veterinary professional promptly if you suspect exposure. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s ten prevention tips below were published in 2015, so use them as practical guidance alongside current veterinary advice.
How to prevent accidental poisoning
Secure medicines, cleaners and household chemicals
Store prescription and over-the-counter medicines in closed cabinets pets cannot access. Keep pet medicines separate from family medicines to reduce the chance of giving the wrong product or dose. Cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids and other hazardous products should also be stored securely. A lockable medication box can provide an additional storage option, but it is not a guarantee that a pet cannot get into its contents.

When cleaning, keep pets away from the area and follow product directions, including rinsing when directed. Secure antifreeze and other automotive products, and clean spills promptly. Even a small spill can create an opportunity for a pet to lick or step in a hazardous substance.
Keep pest-control products inaccessible
Place rodent and insect baits where pets cannot reach them, and do not assume a bait station is safe simply because it is enclosed. If a pest-control product is used in or around your home, keep its packaging and product information available in case a pet is exposed.

Check foods and plants for your pet’s species
Do not offer human food without checking whether it is appropriate for your animal. ASPCA’s 2015 tips name grapes and raisins, garlic and onion, cocoa bean mulch, and macadamia nuts for dogs as examples of hazards; they also note avocado as a concern for birds. This is not a complete list, and a food’s risk can differ by species and circumstances. Ask your veterinarian about foods before sharing them.
Identify plants in your home and yard, and remove those that may be dangerous to your pets. The APCC’s examples include oleander, yew, sago palms and lilies. Plant risk is not identical for every animal, so verify a specific plant with a veterinarian or poison-control professional rather than relying on a general list.

Use only species-appropriate medicines and parasite products
Give a pet medication only when it has been recommended by a veterinarian. Follow flea and tick product labels carefully, especially species restrictions: a product labeled for one kind of animal may not be suitable for another. If you are unsure whether a product is appropriate, check with your veterinarian before using it.

If a contractor applies pest-control or other chemical products in your home, ask for the product name and any directions about keeping pets away. For regulated products, the EPA registration number can help a veterinary or poison-control professional identify what was used.

What information to keep for an emergency
Knowing the exact product involved can help professionals assess a possible exposure. Keep packaging, labels or a photo of the label where you can find it, and note the product name. If the label includes an EPA registration number, record that too. ASPCA also recommended its APCC mobile app as an informational reference in its 2015 article; an app or general reference should not replace professional advice about a suspected exposure.
What to do if your pet may have been poisoned
- Stop further exposure. Move your pet away from the product, plant, food or affected area. Keep other pets away as well.
- Check your pet and gather details. Note what may have been involved and when. Collect packaging, remaining material or any pills you can safely retrieve.
- Contact a veterinary professional promptly. Call your veterinarian or a poison-control service for guidance. Do not wait for symptoms: some effects can be delayed.
- Do not try a remedy first. Do not give your pet anything or take action based on internet advice before speaking with a veterinary professional; an attempted remedy can cause additional problems.
If your pet is unconscious, having difficulty breathing, bleeding or having seizures, go to an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. For other suspected exposures, a poison-control or veterinary professional can assess the details and advise whether home monitoring or clinic treatment is appropriate.

ASPCA Poison Control contact information
ASPCA currently lists its Poison Control line as (888) 426-4435, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A consultation fee may apply. Confirm the contact details on ASPCA’s official page when needed, since service information can change.
What ASPCA’s poison-control figures mean
ASPCA reported that its Poison Control service assisted more than 322,000 animals nationwide in 2024, and that chocolate accounted for 13.6% of its exposures that year. These are figures from ASPCA’s service data, not a count of all poisonings or all animals in the United States. The chocolate figure also reinforces why suspected exposure deserves a prompt professional assessment rather than a guess based on a general list of hazards.
