A Pomeranian is a tiny dog with a big-dog personality: alert, intelligent, active, affectionate, and often ready to announce anything unusual. The breed can thrive in an apartment, but its small size does not make it maintenance-free. Poms need regular coat care, dental care, training, safe handling, and thoughtful supervision around children and larger animals.
Here is what prospective and current owners should know about Pomeranian size, temperament, grooming, exercise, training, nutrition, health, and responsible buying.

What does a Pomeranian look like?
Pomeranians have a short, dense undercoat and a longer, harsher outer coat. The coat is fuller around the neck and chest, shorter on the head and legs, feathered on the forelegs, and especially abundant over the hindquarters and tail.
This appearance is attractive but demanding. The outer coat can hide tangles close to the skin, so a quick surface brush is not enough. Coat care needs to reach all the way down to the undercoat.
“Teacup,” “micro,” and “toy” Pomeranian are marketing descriptions, not separate AKC-recognized varieties. The recognized breed has one general size range of 3–7 pounds. An unusually tiny puppy is not automatically higher quality and may face increased risks from injury, inadequate intake, and hypoglycemia.
Some owners request a shaved or heavily sculpted haircut. Neat trimming is acceptable, but the American Pomeranian Club standard cautions against artificial shaping or removing most of the guard hair, tail plume, or hind-leg skirt. Discuss the desired outline with a groomer who understands double-coated breeds.
Pomeranian temperament and behavior
The breed standard describes Pomeranians as intelligent, alert, extroverted, vivacious, inquisitive, cocky, commanding, and animated. In everyday life, that often means a small dog that notices movement outside the window, wants to participate in household activities, and may behave as though it is much larger than it really is.
Poms are affectionate companions, but they are not simply decorative lapdogs. They usually enjoy walks, games, short runs, trick training, and activities such as rally, obedience, agility, and therapy work. Mental stimulation is particularly useful for a clever dog that might otherwise invent its own entertainment.
Are Pomeranians noisy?
Many Pomeranians are vocal, especially when alerting to visitors, sounds, other dogs, or activity outside. Barking is not an unavoidable feature of every Pom, nor is it something the dog is incapable of learning to control.

- COAT MOISTURE AND BALANCE: Grooming formula is designed to restore natural coat shine, minimize shedding, and strengthen fur follicles through moisturizing ingredients that penetrate the coat cuticle and work from the inside out.
Begin by identifying the trigger. Reward the dog for noticing a sound without escalating, teach a calm alternative such as settling on a mat, and reinforce quiet attention. Avoid repeatedly shouting over barking, which can increase excitement or make the dog think you are joining in.
Are Pomeranians good with children and other pets?
A well-socialized Pom can live successfully with other animals, but its size creates real safety concerns. A larger dog can injure a Pomeranian accidentally during play, even without aggressive intent. Interactions should be supervised, and the Pom should have a secure space where it can retreat.
Pomeranians are generally a better match for older, dog-aware children than for toddlers. Children need to learn not to carry, squeeze, chase, corner, or disturb the dog while it eats or sleeps. A Pomeranian should never be treated like a toy, and no child should be left unsupervised with one.
Exercise and home safety
A Pomeranian’s exercise needs are manageable, including in an apartment or city home, but the dog still needs daily opportunities to walk, explore, play, and think. Several short activities may work better than one long outing:
- Short walks with time to sniff
- Interactive play with appropriately sized toys
- Brief reward-based training sessions
- Puzzle feeders or supervised food games
- Trick, rally, obedience, or agility exercises suited to the individual dog
Do not assume a small fenced yard is automatically secure. Poms can escape through surprisingly small gaps or over low barriers. Outdoors, they are vulnerable to uncontrolled dogs, traffic, and predatory birds such as hawks and owls. Keep the dog supervised and use secure equipment.
Falls are another important risk. A jump from a bed or sofa can cause a fracture or joint injury in a tiny dog. Baby gates, ramps, pet stairs, and lifting the dog down from high furniture can reduce accidents. Avoid rough play with larger dogs and teach children how to handle the dog safely.
Pomeranian grooming requirements
A Pomeranian is not low-maintenance simply because it is small. Plan on the following routine:

| Task | Practical schedule or advice |
|---|---|
| Brushing | At least weekly, working through the coat down to the skin |
| Professional grooming | About every 4–6 weeks if you do not maintain the coat at home |
| Nail care | Regularly; nails should not be allowed to grow long |
| Teeth | Brush regularly and arrange veterinary dental care when advised |
| Ears and bathing | Check routinely and include them in the grooming plan |
A pin brush and slicker brush can help separate the coat, but technique matters. Brush in sections and inspect areas that mat easily, including behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and over the hindquarters. A professional groom should include bathing, brushing, ear care, nail trimming, and other routine maintenance.
Pomeranians shed and are not hypoallergenic. No dog is completely hypoallergenic, and allergy responses vary between people and individual dogs.
Training a Pomeranian
Pomeranians are bright and capable, but they can also be self-directed. Training works best when sessions are short, consistent, reward-based, and repeated before the dog becomes bored. Avoid excusing unwanted behavior because the dog is small; a toy dog needs the same boundaries and socialization opportunities as a larger one.
Start early with:
- House-training: Use a predictable schedule, supervise closely, and reward outdoor elimination immediately. Limit unsupervised access to the home while the puppy is learning. Punishment for accidents can make the process harder.
- Leash skills: Teach the puppy to follow a light leash without pulling. Do not allow a Pom to drag you toward dogs, people, or exciting smells.
- Recall: Practice indoors and in secure areas before expecting a reliable response outdoors.
- Handling: Pair gentle touching of paws, ears, mouth, tail, and coat with treats. This makes grooming and veterinary examinations less stressful.
- Calm behavior: Reward settling on a mat, looking away from distractions, and remaining quiet after an alert.
Early socialization should include people, surfaces, household sounds, car travel, grooming, veterinary handling, and carefully chosen dogs. Socialization is not forcing a puppy into every situation; it is providing controlled, positive exposure with a safe escape space.
Feeding and nutrition
Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage: puppy, adult, or senior. Follow the food’s feeding guidance as a starting point, then adjust with your veterinarian according to body condition, activity, age, and health. Treat calories count, and some Pomeranians gain excess weight easily.
Recommended Free Tools
Fresh water should always be available. A home-prepared diet should be formulated and monitored with veterinary guidance rather than assembled from an unbalanced internet recipe.
Very young or unusually tiny puppies can develop hypoglycemia, particularly during stress, illness, parasitic infection, or inadequate food intake. Weakness, unusual sleepiness, tremors, collapse, or seizures are emergencies. Ask the breeder and veterinarian for specific feeding intervals and an emergency plan before bringing home a vulnerable puppy.

Common Pomeranian health concerns
Breed-level risks do not mean an individual Pomeranian will develop every condition, but they are useful when planning preventive care and evaluating a breeder.
Patellar luxation
Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap slips out of its normal position, is identified by the American Pomeranian Club as the breed’s most common problem. Ask breeders for documented patella evaluations for both parents.

Heart disease
Pomeranians can develop cardiac disease ranging from mild problems to conditions that progress to congestive heart failure. Routine veterinary examinations can help identify abnormal heart sounds or other warning signs.
Tracheal collapse
A persistent dry cough or honking sound deserves veterinary attention. Do not automatically dismiss it as a hairball or ordinary throat-clearing. A harness may be preferable to pressure on the neck, but a cough still needs assessment.
Alopecia X
Alopecia X or severe hair-loss syndrome can cause progressive coat loss in an otherwise healthy dog. It is a coat disorder and is not automatically life-threatening. The American Pomeranian Club opposes euthanasia solely because of Alopecia X when the dog is otherwise healthy.
Other reported concerns
The American Pomeranian Club also lists hypothyroidism, seizures, eye disease, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and hip dysplasia among conditions that may affect the breed. Regular examinations, appropriate weight control, dental care, and prompt investigation of changes in movement, breathing, appetite, coat, or behavior are important.

- A basic or advanced cardiac evaluation

- An eye examination by an ACVO ophthalmologist registered with OFA, or an approved autoimmune-thyroid evaluation as the health elective
- Hip radiographs and Legg-Calvé-Perthes radiographs, which are optional but recommended by the club
Ask to see the parents’ official OFA or equivalent records, ask about relevant family history, and be cautious if a seller emphasizes extreme smallness, unusual color, immediate availability, or vague “vet checked” claims instead of documented health information.
Is a Pomeranian right for you?
A Pom may be a good fit if you want a small companion that enjoys training, play, walks, and close involvement with the household. The breed can suit apartment living, provided it receives daily activity and is not left to bark at every passing sound.

FAQ
Are Pomeranians good apartment dogs?
Usually, yes. Their exercise needs are manageable in an apartment, but they still need daily walks, play, training, mental stimulation, and help learning not to bark at every sound. Outdoor supervision and secure doors, windows, and fencing are essential.
How much grooming does a Pomeranian need?
Brush through the double coat down to the skin at least weekly. If you do not handle grooming at home, plan for a professional full groom about every four to six weeks. Regular nail trimming and tooth brushing are also important.
Are teacup Pomeranians a separate breed?
No. “Teacup,” “micro,” and “toy” are marketing terms rather than separate AKC-recognized Pomeranian varieties. The AKC size range is 3–7 pounds, and unusually small puppies may have increased health and injury risks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do Pomeranians bark a lot?
Many are vocal because they are alert and observant, but excessive barking can often be improved. Reward calm behavior, teach a quiet or settle cue, manage triggers, and avoid reinforcing barking with attention or repeated shouting.
Are Pomeranians hypoallergenic?
No. Pomeranians shed their profuse double coat, and no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergy responses differ among people and individual dogs.
The Bottom Line
Pomeranians are lively, trainable companion dogs—not effortless accessories. Their small size makes them convenient to exercise but also increases their vulnerability to falls, rough play, escapes, larger dogs, and hypoglycemia in very young or unusually tiny puppies. Choose documented health testing, establish grooming and dental routines, train early, and supervise interactions. With that care, a Pom can be an engaging family companion for 12–16 years or more.
